Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER COOPER HEWITT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements i Apparatus for Operating Vapor Convertei' s the following is a specification.
I have found that it is possible-to operate translating devices in a work circuit from a single phase source of alternating currents, with the aid ofvapor converters, by deriving from a single phase'source fourphase currents, utilizing two of the derived currents, approximately 180 apart, for
keeping the converter alive, and utilizing the, other two derived currents, approxlmatelyv 180 apart, for operating the translating devices. approaching 90 and 270" being somewhere between 0 and 90 and 180 and 270. The several derived currents may be produced from the same transformer, but
in such cases there is apt to be difliculty due to short-circuits. According to my present invention employ two transformers, one having two secondaries for performing the operation of keeping the vapor converter alive, the other, being preferably an autotransformer having a' single secondary, or such an arrangement of apparatus or circuits as will give approximately the same result.
My invention Will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in
- which- Figures 1 and 2 are diagrams of circuits adapted to the accomplishment of the purtwo secondaries, 5 and 6, the arrangement being such that the currents derived from the said second-tries are 180 apart. The primary 3 is provided with a secondary, 7 the natural phase difference of the currents derived from the said primary and secondary being approximately 180.
In the system thus constituted I include a of which.
The two pairs of currents vapor converter, 8, having four positive electrodes, 9, 10, 11 and 12, and a common negative electrode, 13. The working positive electrodes are those which appear at 10 and 11, the electrodes 9 and 12 being adapted to serve the verter alive.
The electrodes 9. and 12 are connected, respectively to corresponding terminals of the trans ormer secondaries 5 and 6, while the negative electrode 13 is connected to an intermediate point between the said secondarms by means of a Wire, 14, including an inductance, 15.
Instead of using the inductance 15 in the conductor 14 an inductance may be included in the circuit of the electrodes 9 and 12, respectively, as shown, for example, in Fig. 2
of the drawing 'at 18 and 19. When these tance 15 shown in Fig. 1 may be omitted.

At. the same time the primary 3 and the secondary 7 are acting through the converter 8 to supply the translating devices in the work circuit 16.
