To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. CArrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dumont, vin the county of Butler and State of Iowa, have invented a new and'uscfu] Power Plant, of which the following is av specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a power plant of simple and durable con# struction whereby steam may be generated by use of gasolene and in which all the heat of the gasolene is utilized.
More particularly, it is my object to provide a power plant including a steam boiler in which lues are dispensed with and in which is mounted a receptacle containing a gasolene or other burner.
A further object is to provide a power plant in which the products of combustion are discharged with the steam.
A further object is to provide a. boiler of the kind described, and a burner of the kind mentioned in a receptacle in the boiler, and to provide means for forcing the fuel into the burner under pressure and for mixing air with the fuel as the latter is fed to the burner.
My invention consists in certain details, in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims. and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a power plant embodying my invention, some of the parts being broken away to show the interior mechanism of the boiler` and the burner. Fig. 2 shows a vertical, transverse, sectional view through the burner tube.
In the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate a storage tank for compressed air which may be supplied through the tube 11. On the tank 10 is a pressure gage 12 and a safety valve 13. Near the tank 10 is a boiler 14 on which is a steam dome 15 communicating with which is a discharge pipe 1G. On the steam dome is a steam gage 17. The boiler 14 is designed to contain water 18. Mounted within the boiler is a. receptacle 20 which may be cylindrical in form as shown and is designed to be ordinarily wholly surrounded by the water in the boiler. A pipe 19 communicates with the tank 10 and extends through the end of the boiler 1 4 and through Specification of Letters Patent.

Communicating with the interior of the receptacle :20 and extending upwardly therefrom into the steam dome 15, is a ltube 22 designed to carry theproducts of eombustion into the steam dome.

In Vthe pipe 9.7 is a valve Q8 and in the pipe 19 between the tube 27 and the tank 10 is a. valve 29.
Communicating with `the interior of the receptacle Q() and extending to a point out side the wall of the boiler 14, is a tube 30 which may be internally serewtlireaded, shown. n the tube 30 is a spark plug 3l extending through which is an electrode 32, the upper end 'of which is slightly spaced apart from the electrode 33, which may be grounded on the tube` 30, thus forminor a spark gap between the electrodes 32 and 3.
At a suitable point is placed a battery 3st. one wire 35, of which is connected with the electrode and the other wire 3G, of which is connected with the boiler 14.
It will be understood that the tube 30 and the receptacle 20, the boiler 1.4 and the brackets 38, b v which the receptacle Q0 is mounted in the boiler, are made of conduct` ing metals or at least are connected lily conducting metals.
On the battery 34 is a lsuitable switch 37. At a suitable point below the tube 19 is a generator 39. 0n the boiler is a water gage 40.
The practical operation of my improved power plant is as follows: Fuel is placed in the fuel tank Zet unt-il the tank is almost filled. The air is pumped into the tank 10. The discharge of fuel and air from the tanks 24 and 1() is regulated by the valves 28 and Q9. The boiler is filled with water. By operating the valves 9.8 and 29, fue] and air may be mingled in the pipe 19. The generator 39 may he used to vaporize the gaso- 19, preferably below the -As will be seen from the foregoing deseription, the arrangement and construction of my power plant enables me lto dispense .with the tubes which are one vof the expensive features of the ordinary steam boiler. On account of the fact that the receptacle 20 is in the' water in the boiler, and thatthe discharge of products of combustion is into the steam, I am able to utilize all the heat generated from the burner .21. Air under pressure may be mixed with the gasolene as desired. Y
My power plant effects a great saving in cost of construction and in the'amount 0f fuel necessary to produce a given amount of steam. The parts are simple and are not likely to wear out.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a. device of the class described, the combination of a boiler, a receptacle therein designed to be submergedv in the water in said boiler, a. burner in said receptacle, a tank designed to contain air under pressu1e,.a pipe leading from said tank through the walls of the b oller and the receptacle to said burner, a fuel supply tank, a tube conmeeting the upper end thereof with said air tank, a tube connectin the lower end of said fuel tank with saidv ipe, a valve in said last named tube, a Va ve in said pipe between the last named tube and the air tank, means for carrying off the products of combustion from said receptacle with the steam from said boiler, a generator cup on the outside of said boiler arranged below the pipe leading to said burner for the purpose of generating the fuel within said pipe, and means whereby the generated fuel in said burner may be ignited from outside the boiler.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a horizontal boiler, a receptacle therein designed to be submerged 1n the water in said boiler, a burner pipe 1ongitudinally arranged within said receptacle, a tank designed to contain air under pressure', a pipe leading from said tank throuoh the walls of the boiler and the receptae e to said burner, a fuel supply tank, a tube connecting the upper end t ereof with said air tank, a tube connecting the lower end of said fuel tank with said pipe, a valve in said last named tube, a valve in said pipe between said last named tube and the air tank, a generator cup on the outside of 'said boiler arranged below the pipe leading to the burner. for the purpose of generating the fuel within said pipe, a tube communicatingwit-h said receptacle adjacent to the burner and extending outside of said boiler, a spark plug arranged in said tube, 'a battery electrically connected with said spark plug to thereby provide a spark near said burner for igniting the generated gas therein, and `means for carrylng off the products of combustion from said receptacle with the steam from said boiler as and for the purposes stated. v
