Be it known that I, GEORGE F. KEENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vfhitman, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Stroppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to razor stropping machines, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of the char acter described which will strop a razor from heel to toe upon both sides of the blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide a razor stropper in which the razor holder remains stationary in so far as any longitudinal movement thereof is concerned, and the strop moves or travels in the direction of the length of the blade.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for causing the strop to move longitudinally of the razor blade working in conjunction with a device which alternately presents the blade first to one side and then to the other side of the strop.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide means resiliently connected together for guiding the strop and insuring its reciprocation from one end to the other end of the frame.
A still further object contemplated by the invention is to provide means for maintaining the razor holder free from contact with the strop when in inactive position.
To the accomplishment of the recited objects and others coordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in that construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.

Broadly speaking my invention includes a frame having a rockable friction-roller at the top thereof suitably connected with a razor holder to cause the latter to oscillate from side to side in accordance with the movements of the strop, in combination with a pair of devices at the lower end of said frame which are calculated to positively insure a longitudinal movement of the strop with respect to the razor blade. These devices comprise right and left handed screws arranged in parallelism upon opposite sides 1 of the frame and working conjunctively with a pair of main rollers and a pair of ancillary guide rollers, the main rollers being conjnected with the screws by means of a suitable engaging member, whereby when the stro-p is operated both rollers will travel the length of the screws in one direction and then reverse their movement in the opposite direction. In addition, I employ means for maintaining the razor holder centrally of the strop under normal conditions.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates 'a frame of substantially inverted U-shape having at the top thereof a securing device 2, and immediately below a rockable frictionroller 3 journaled in the side of the frame. Below the roller 3 and connected at each .end thereto by means of a yoke & is a blade holder 5, the specific connection between these elements comprising a depending shank portion 6 having a laterally eXtending pin 7 which engages an elongated slot 8 in the upwardly disposed projection 9 formed, preferably, as an integral part of the crown of said blade holder. The blade holder is of the usual configuration, and is provided with a corrugated flat spring 10 at its too, the same being suitably secured at one end and having its opposite extremity 11 deflected at right angles, whereby it will be seen that the spring serves to maintain the razor blade, as 12, firmly between the jaws of the blade holder 5 and also to prevent lateral displacement of the razor, this obviously being due to the projection 11.
In order to sustain the blade holder 5 in a true vertical position when the device is not in use I mount a pair of springs, as 18, at each end thereof just above the top, as clearly exhibited in Figs. 2. and 4 of the drawing, and in order to insure an engagement of the razor blade with the strop 14 I arrange a pair of struts or rods 15 in juxtaposition to said springs and exteriorly of the strep.
At the lower extremity of the frame 1 and disposed in horizontal alinement with respect thereto is a right hand screw 16 and a left hand screw 17, each of which is equipped with reduced terminals 18 engaging and extending through the elongated slots 19 of the frame, the adjacent projections of the screws being connected by a' curvilinear or bowed spring 20. Upon the screws 16 and 17 are mounted friction-rollers 21 and 22, and each roller carries a pin 23 designed for engagement with the thread of the respective screws, while the outer terminals of each roller are outwardly beveled and flanged, as at 2-1. I11 horizontal alinement with the screws is a pair of rods 25 carrying idlers 26, the outer ends of which are inwardly beveled, as at 27.
In operation the device is suitably attached by mean of an eye 2 to any convenient support, the razor blade 12 adjusted in the holder 5, and the strop pulled back and forth. As the strop moves in one direction it will frictionally engage the top roller 3 which will rock a distance sufficient to cause the blade holder to be deflected toward the inside of the strop, whereas upon the reverse movement of the latter the blade holder will cause the razor blade to be thrust against the other side of the strop. This is obviously due to the fact that the yoke 1 is fixed rigidly to the roller 3 and is permitted to have a slight movement by reason of the elongated slot in the projection 9 of the blade holder. Sinmltaneously with this operation, the friction set up by the strop engaging the rollers 21 and 2 causes the said rollers to rotate in opposite directions and move longitudinally of the screws 16 and 17 in the same direction until they engage the sides of the frame 1, w iereupon owing to the reversal in direction of travel of the strop, the spools will be automatically reversed and travel to the opposite end of the frame. In order to positively insure rotation of the rollers 21 and 22 the idlers 26 are provided and work in conjunction with the bowed springs 20, which manifestly exert sufiicient pressure upon the said rollers to cause the same to frictionally engage the strop between the rollers and the idlers 26.
It should be understood that in its broader aspect the invention comprehends the employment not only of the various means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions. lVhile the arrangement shown is thought at the present time to be preferable, it is desired to reserve the right to effect such modifications and variations thereof as may come fairly within the scope of the appended claims.

In a razor stropping machine, the combination of a frame, a rockable support carried by said frame, a blade holder connected to said support, a strep adapted for frictional engagement with said support, a right hand screw, a left hand screw, rollers mounted one upon each screw for endwise movement thereon and adapted for frictional engagement with said strop, a pair of idlers arranged adjacent said rollers, and a resilient connection for said screws.

A razor stro-pping machine comprising a frame, a rockable support, a blade holder connected to said support, a pair of rigid supports, elements mounted on the last mentioned supports and adapted for rectilineally endwise movement thereon, a strop engaging said first mentioned support and elements, said frame having elongated slots for receiving the extremities of said rigid supports, and springs connecting the terminals of said supports.
5. In a razor stropping machine, the combination of a frame involving a rockab-le support, a blade holder in operative relation with said support, rotary endwise movable devices resiliently connected together, a strop engageable with the support and the devices, and means whereby said strop together with the devices is caused to travel endwise of the support when the strop is operated.
