Description

KW'. M. BARR.
PLANBR.
No. 108,955. y Patented Nov. l8, 1870.r
.mail iatt @met @film WILLIAM M. BARR, or WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.-
Letters Patent No. 108,955, dated November H871) atedated October 28, 1876.
IMPROVEMENT IN GEARING FOR METALePLANERS..
The Bhedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To all lizo/wm. it may cozweru.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM-'1511. BARR, ofthe cityr of Williamsport, county of Lycoming, -State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Power-Planets; andfIdo hereby declare that the 'following is a full, clear, and 'exact description thereof, reference being 'had'to the aeoompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. y
The nature of'. my invention consists in applying a system of gearing to power-planers, in order to suit the speed 'ofthe' planerl to the kind of nieta-'l being operated on.
When a planer is speeded properly for cast-iron,
Ait runs toofast for east-steel, and too slow for brass.
As my improvement is in the running-gear, Ilwill proceed to describe its action only', without reference to the particular kind of flaming employed.
The pulleys, a a. a, receive motion in the usual manner, giving motion to the shaft b. In the en'd of this shaft a hole is drilled, large enough to admit the pin It', shown in the enlarged view at'g. 3. The shaft b is slotted to admit the feather Z, which is secured in pin lc.
The gearing eoc is fitted witha recess large enough between .each pairv of wheels Ato allow the featherl in pin k to be entirely free from the gearing on one side before entering the gearing on the other side. This recessgis shown in the parts colored black in v.- 3.
- From one recess to the other is out a key-way, large enough to permit the feather l inpin 7c to pass through and engage any one gear-wheel of the system, at the will of the operator.
The gears :l d d are all keyed fast to the shaft e.
When it is desired to give the table of the planer the 'slowest speed the pin 7a is pushed in until the' feather l enters the key-way in e, which communi- Gates its motion to the gear-wheel d. l
On this same shaft e' is a pinion, f, which gears into the master-wheel G, from which the table receives its motion. y
'Lge table of the'planer is then running at its slowest speed, e being the smallest driving, and d the.
largest driven wheels ofthe system.
y When the feather Z engages the wheel o' the planer will run as much faster as the difference between the wheels-jc and c d and d'. l
To run the planer still faster, the A'feather l should engage the `wheel e", and so on for any number of 'wheels that may bedesired.
What I claimas my invention, and desire to secure by .Letters Patent, is-
The combination .fof the recessed gear-wheels c c'o", hollow slotted sha-ft b, pin k, and feat-her l, with the gearfwb'eels' did di', substantially as hereinbefore described. y
