Description

c. K. FARR.
Ditching-Plow. No. 10.886. I Patented May 9. 1854.
N-PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oHAS. K. FARR, or AUBURN P. 0., MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULT IVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,886, dated May 9, 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES K. FARR, of
Auburn P.O.,in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn and Cotton Furrow Openers; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- 7 Figure 1 is a plan or top view of the implement. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section on line as w of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same part of the implement.
My invention consists in the employment of a bed with sides inclining upward and outward, connected, as will hereinafter be described, with the beam and handles of the implement, to the front of which is fastened an adjustable colter, the object being to prevent the earth from falling into the furrow by the pressure of the sides of the bed as the plow moves forward.
In the drawings, A is the bed, consisting of the bottom a and inclined sides I). From this bed arise the standards B and G and the curved slotted front piece, D, the latter connected with the standard 13 by the plate 0. This bed and standards may be cast in one piece, or may be made in several pieces, and constructed of either cast or wrought iron.
The colter E is, secured to the front piece, D,
by the bolt 01, passed through it and the slot j; its position being regulated by the depth of furrow required. The beam rests upon the standard (J and plate 0, and is secured in position by bolts running from the bottom a. (Indicated by red lines in Fig. 3.) The handles are attached on each side of the plate 1? on the standard B by a bolt through the opening m, and running on each side of the beam are there fastened and then diverge, as in ordinary plows.
The operation of this implementisasfollows: The colter is regulated to the depth of furrow required by moving the bolt d in the slotfprevious to tightening. The plow is then driven forward, as usual, throwing open a furrow, in which follows the inclined bed A the weight of which causes sufficient pressure against the sides of the furrow to render them to some extent compact and prevent the earth from falling in.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bed A, with inclined sides I), as described, which, following the trace of the colter, renders the sides of the furrow compact and prevents the falling in of the earth, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
e. .K. FAR-R.
