Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ll eb. it, 1914.
Application filed January 16, 1913. Serial No. 742,408.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN iorjui'n s, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Modesto, in the county of tltanislaus, State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in l.ov; err .djustcrs for lVindmills; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact des .:ription of the same, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in wind-mills, the object of the invention being to produce an adjuster for such windmill whereby the power developed by the mill may be proportioned according to the strength or" the wind, that is, with a light wind a greater leverage may be had between the mill and the pump with a correspond ingly shorter stroke to the pump and with a heavy wind this leverage would be decreased and the length of the stroke of the pump increased. This adjustable mechanism is adapted to work automatically and be controlled by the force 01" the wind.
A. further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
in the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wind mill showing my improved mechanism in. stalled in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved mechanism. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the mill, the numeral 2, the rod, and the numeral 3 the pump rod.
My improved mechanism is installed between the rods 2 and 3 and constructed as follows, viz: The numeral 4: designates the platform suitably secured on beams 5 secured in turn on the frame 6 of the mill. Pivotally mounted on the platform t is a bar 8 having a downwardly projecting vane or fan blade 9. Pivotally mounted on the platform 4t as at 10 is a bar 11. in which is journalcd a shaft 12 carrying a wheel 13 on one end and a sprocket wheel ll on the other end such sprocket wheel having a chain 15 mounted thereon, such chain being connected to the bar 8. A. til-shaped bolt 16 is secured horizontally at the end of the member 11 and. over the upper portion of the same is slidably mounted the rod 2, and over the lower portion of the same is slidably mounted the rod The rod 2 is flexibly connected by means of a link 1'? with the wheel 13 and the rod 3 is flexibly connected. by a link 18 with the opposite side or the wheel 13.
.ln practice as will be seen, the pivotal point 10 forms the fulcrum tor a lever consisting of the member 11, the wheel 13 and the ll-bolt 16, the members 2 and 3 being adapted to slide along one end of the lever and change the degree of leverage. Fig. 2 shows the parts in a position giving the greatest leverage, and in this position the vane 9 is in strictly vertical position and is of such weight and so constructed that a very light breeze will not affect its position and thus with such light breeze the greatest leverage is exerted between the members 2 and 3 giving a short stroke to the rod 3. When the wind increases however it will exert itself against the vane 9 moving it one way or the other according to the direction of the wind and this action will move the bar 8 on its pivotal point 7. This will cause the chain 15 to move and drive the' sprocket wheel 14; which. motion will also turn the wheel 13 changing the positions of the members 17 and 13 and hence drawing the members 2 and 3 toward each other due to their slidable connection with the member 16. This action as will be noted will decrease the length of the lever which will decrease the power but at the same time increase the stroke of the rod 3.
From the foregoing description it will readily be seen that with a light wind the leverage is increased in order that the pump may be operated. even with a light breeze and the stroke of the rod 3 is at its minimum thus permitting the operation of the same with case under these conditions. With the increased velocity of the wind however the action above described takes place and gives the pump leverage 3 the full capacity stroke and at the same time lessens the leverage and permits the increased velocity of the wind. to be fully exerted to operate the pump to its full capacity, the loss of power due to l lever, a rod slidable the decreased leverage being gained by the velocity of the wind.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviation from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described comprising a lever pivotally mounted, a rectangular frame on the outer end of said on the upper side of said rectangular frame, a rod slidable on the lower side of said rectangular frame, a wheel journaled on said lever, links connecting said rods to the outer periphery of said wheel at diametrically opposed points, a sprocket wheel connected with said first named wheel, a lever :Eulcrumed independently of said first named lever, a chain connected with said last named lever on opposite sides of said fulcrum point, said chain being disposed over said sprocket wheel, as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HOPKINS.
