PLANE.
To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, OLAF O. SKRUKRUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lanesboro, in the county of Fillmore and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in planes, and more particularly to planes used upon wood planing machines, which planes are mounted upon a track for cutting grooves and the like.
The object of this invention is to provide a shoe which is connected to the plane which will act as a guide during the cutting opera tion and which will pass out of the groove as the plane approaches the end of the groove to be cut, thereby allowing the bit of the plane to come to the end of the groove for making the proper cut.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1. is a view in side elevation of a machine upon which the plane may be applied, and showing the plane practically in section to disclose the shoe. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the shoe; and Fig. 3 is detail of the board operated upon.
A represents the bed of the machine and B is the track upon which are mounted the hangers 1, 1, to which the plane 8 is connected. A slot 1 is formed in the plane, in which the bit or blade is received, and which is held in position by a bolt A guard 6 is supported at the opposite side of the slot by a bolt 7. A groove or slot 8 is formed at the forward end of the plane in which is re ceived a shoe 9. The shoe 9 is provided with a vertical slot 10. A pin 11 passes through the plane and through the vertical slot 10 of the shoe, whereby the shoe is supported within the slot 8 and capable of vertical movement therein. A spring 12 is received within the slot 8 which bears against the shoe for holding the same down, so that the shoe would extend below the bottom of the plane. The forward end of the shoe is Specification of Letters Patent.

curved upwardly, as at let. As the plane is traveling along the track and the groove is being formed in the board, and after the groove has been started, the shoe will travel in the groove, causing the bit of the plane to travel along the groove. When a short groove is to be formed, as indicated, for instance, at 17 of the board C in Fig. 3, a hole 17 is formed at the end of the groove. The plane, as it travels along the track will pro 0 duce the cutting operation for forming a groove up to the hole 17. As the shoe strikes the wall of the hole, it will move upward, passing up onto the board, and allowing the bit to travel along the groove and 5 make the cut up to the hole 17. The shoe mounting the board or plank in this manner will form a certain amount of rigidity for the plane to prevent lateral movement and insure the proper cutting of the groove, and the same is true when the shoe is traveling through the groove, as the body of the plane will not come in contact with the plane.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a bed, of a track mounted on the bed, a plane mounted upon the track adapted to move thereon, said plane having a slot formed in one end there of, a shoe mounted in the slot and projecting beyond and below the plane, the forwardly projecting end of the shoe having the under side thereof curved upwardly, said shoe having an elongated vertical. slot therein, a pin passing through the plane and slot of the shoe for holding the shoe in place and allowing the shoe to have an oscillating movement thereon and move vertically through the plane, and a spring in the slot of the plane engaging the shoe for normally holding it so that it will project below the plane and in a horizontal position.
In testimony whereof I atliX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
OLAF O. SKRUKRUD.
