REINFORCEMENT FOR CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION.
' Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN O. ELLINGER,
a citizen of the United States, and a resi-- fastened together to be delivered on the job as a single unit.
One of the objects of the invention isto simplify and decrease the cost of construction and to increase the efliciency of reinforcements heretofore produced.
Other objects will appear from the hereinafter description.
The invention is set forth in the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of the same, and in which the same reference character indicates the same part in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a unit ready for shipment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modified construction. Fig. 8 is a cross section on line 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 4; of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a plate for holding the two side frames together and for spacing the unit in the mold. Fig. 6 is a cross section of the reinforcement with the plate in position. Fig. 7 is a view of one end of a reinforcement showing the shear members inclined.
The parts marked A and B represent the two side frames, each formed of the straight bars 1 and the bent or upturned bars 2. The bar 2 has a straight portion near its middle and is located adjacent and parallel to the middle part of'the bar 1, the end of the bar 2 being upturned away from the first bar, but each of the ends of said bar 2 is substantially parallel to the bar 1. The bars 1 and 2 are connected together at their middle portions by thebracing 3.
4 is a series of continuous loops, each made preferably of a single rod and ex tending from one of the bars 1 to the other outside of the bracing 3, with the ends as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or they mas be placed at an incline thereto as shown in Fig. 7
The bars 1 and 2*form' the tension members of the construction and the loop rods 4. form the shear members of the reinforcement. 7 I i 5 represents longitudinal rods that extend across each of the series'of loops at the end of the frame and arerigidly connected thereto. These rods actas stiffening means to properly space and hold the loops together and in an upright position.
It may be desirable in some instances to provide additional strength to the construction, in which case there is provided for each side frame a span consisting of "a curved rod 6 connected to the middle portion of the rod 2 as shown. Each of these.
curved rods 6 are connected together by the cross rods 7, forming braces for the span. 8 represents hangers or stirrups suspended from the rod 6 and connected to the middle portion of the bar 2, as shown in the drawing. All these bars and rods are rigidly connected together Where they meet, preferably by electric welding, but they may be -connected-in any other manner.
The side frames A and B form the tension members of the construction and the transverse loops formthe compression members. When the construction-is completed, the side frames remain sprung apart, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and as there is no obstruction at the bottom of the unit they may be nested, one on the other, for shipment, without taking up as much room as if placed side by side or piled up one on top of the other.
. Before the unit is placed on the job it is necessary to bring the side frames substantially parallel to each other and hold them in that position. This may be doneby any suitable spacing members or clamps. In Fig. 5 I have shown this member made of plates 10 having openings 11 therein to receive the lower ends of the rods l. These openings are so spaced that when the rods are inserted the legs of the rods will be substantially parallel, as shown by Fig. 6. One of these plates 10 may be placed on each of the loops 4-, or a lesser number of plates may be used. When the plates are in position and the unit placed in the mold 12, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, the lower ends of the rods 4 rest against the bottom.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A reinforcement for concrete construction consisting of a plurality of main tension members spaced apart, auxiliary members each of which has a middle portion located near and parallel to the middle portion of each main tension member, the ends being away from but substantially parallel to the main tension member, upper members arranged above the ends of the main tension members, shear members extending from each main tension member and across the upper members and the upper ends of the auxiliary members, cross members connecting the middle portions of the auxiliary tension members and the middle portions of the main tension members, are members extending longitudinally over the middle portions of the auxiliary members, members connecting the arc and the auxiliary members, all the parts being rigidly connected together as by welding where they contact.
2. A reinforcement for concrete construction, consisting of side frames, each formed of a straight bar, a bent bar having the middle portion thereof straight and substantially parallel to the first mentioned bar, the ends of said bent bar also being straight and substantially parallel to the first men tioned bar, diagonal truss members con necting together each of the straight bars and the bent bars near the middle thereof, a series ofloops extending from one of the first mentioned bars to the other beyond the truss members and at each end of the said bars, other bars extending transversely of the loops, and a span extending longitudinally of the frame and arranged between the series of loops, said span being connected to the bent bar near the ends of the middle portion thereof, all of said bars being con nected rigidly together where they join each other.
3. A reinforcement for concrete construction, consisting of side frames, each formed of a straight bar and a bent bar having the middle portion thereof straight and substantially parallel to the first mentioned bar, the ends of said bent bar also being straight and substantially parallel to the first mentioned bar, diagonal braces forming truss members connecting together in pairs the straight bars and the bent bars near the middle thereof, a series of loops extending from one said frame to the other beyond the truss members and at each end of the said bars, other bars extending transversely of the loops, and curved rods extending between the series of loops, the ends of the rods being connected to the bent bars near the ends of the middle thereof, transverse rods connecting said curved rods, and rods connecting the curved rods and the bent bars at the middle portion of said bars, all of the parts being rigidly connected to gether.
l. A reinforcement for concrete construction, consisting of side bars, looped rods extending from one side bar to the other with the ends projecting below said bars, a longitudinal rod connecting the said loops, and aseries of plates having openings therein through which the ends of the looped rods project.
A reinforcement for concrete construetion, comprising side members formed of longitudinal bars located above each other, the upper bar having its mid-portion parallel or substantially parallel to the other bar or bars and upturned ends, said end portions being parallel or substantially parallel to said other bar or bars, a connection in the form of a t-russbetween the said mid-por tions of said bars, a curved span extending over and longitudinally of said truss, and a series of loops extending from one side member to the other and connected thereto.
(3. A reinforcement for concrete construction, consisting of longitudinally extending tension members. a trussed portion interme diate the ends of said tension members, and a span extending over and longitudinally of said trussed portion.
7. A reinforcement for concrete construction, consisting of longitudinally extending tension members, a trussed portion intermediate the ends of said tension members, a curved span extending over and longitudinally of said trussed portion, and loops conmeeting said tension members outside of said trussed portion.
