INKING- MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN A. SrRocELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inking Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in inking mechanism, and more particularly to improved inking mechanism for printing printing press without any change in the mechanism of the press.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a View in elevation at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in section on an enlarged scale on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a view in section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of my improved yoke's, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the trucks 18.
1 represents an ordinary inking plate and 2, 2 are ordinary pivoted arms operated by links 3 to move the inking rolls over the plate 1 in the ordinary manner.
4 is the ratchet wheel controlling the operation of the roll of the ink fountain, this roll being operated by the oscillation of an arm 5 having a pawl 6 thereon, and connected by a flexible device 7 with an arm 2,
but this particular mechanism is not essential as I may employ any means desired for operating the fountain roll which is indicated at 28 in Fig. 2.

having recess bearings 9 for the trunnions 10 of an inking roller 11. The other plungers 8 are pivotally connected by pins 12 with blocks 13. The blocks 13 have recesses 14 in their lower faces forming bearings for the reception of the trunnions 15 of inking rolls 16 and 17 respectively, the former appreciably larger than the latter, but both of said rollers adapted to run on the plate 1. The trunnions 15 of the rolls 16, 17, and 11, have trucks 18 keyed thereto as shown at 29, and these trucks operate by friction to compel the inking rolls to turn.
On the trunnions 15 of the roll 17, I provide my improved yokes 19, one of which is shown in perspective in Fig. 5. Each yoke has an opening 20 to receive the trunnion of roll 17, said opening being larger in diameter than'the trunnion, so that an integral sleeve 18 on the truck 18 will fit within the opening and sustain the pressure of the roll as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Each yoke 19 also has a second opening 21 to receive the trunnion 22 of a distributing roll 23. This roll 23 bears against both rolls 16 and 17, bridging the gap between said rolls and of a diameter appreciably smaller than the roll 17. The yokes 19 have fingers 24 which are projected under the trunnions 15 of the rolls 16 as clearly shown in Fig. 3, thereby maintaining the rolls in contact with each other. In other words, the fingers 24 prevent the roll 23 from moving outwardly away from either of the rolls 16 or 17, but insure a firm contact of the rolls with each other. Pins 25 are projected through the blocks 13 acrossthe recesses 14 to prevent any possibility of the rollers escaping from the blocks and it will be'noted that the yokes 19 are grooved in their lower faces as'shown at 26 so as to give the yoke clearance in rounding the curve indicated at 27 on the press.
In operation, the roll 15 takes the ink from the fountain roll 28, and roll 23 causes the streak of ink to be evenly distributed throughout the rolls 16 and 17, so-that the ink'is evenly distributed on the platev and there is neither streaking nor mirage.
My improvements may be used on any ordinary press without altering the construction of the press, the only change being to supply trucks 18 suitable for the rolls, and to provide the yokes 19 and the necessary rolls.
Various slight changes might be made in the general term and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope 01" the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. i111 inking mechanism of the character described comprising movable members, a plurality of inking rolls carried by said members, a distributing roll contacting with two of the first-mentioned rolls, yokes supporting he distributing roll, said yokes mounted on the trunnions of one of the firstmentioned rolls and having interlocking engagement under the trunnions of another of said rolls, substantially as described.
An inking mechanism of the character described comprising movable members, a plurality of inking rolls carried by said members, a distributing roll contacting with two of the first-mentioned rolls, yokes supporting the distributing roll, said yokes mounted on the trunnions of one of the firstmentioned rolls and having interlocking engagement under the trunnions of another of said rolls, said distributing roll and said rolls with which it contacts being of different diameters, substantially as described.
8. i-in inking mechanism of the character described, comprising movable members, a plurality oi inking rolls carried by said members and adapted to contact with the inking plate, a distributing roll contacting with two of said first mentioned rolls, yokes supporting the distributing roll and removably positioned on the trunnions of one of said firstanentioned rolls, said yokes having fingers thereon projected under the trunnions of one of the first-mentioned rolls, and holding the last-mentioned roll in contact with the first-mentioned rolls, substantially as described.
i. in inking mechanism comprising movable means, two rolls having their trunnions supported in the movable means, trucks secured to the trunnions of said rolls and causing said rolls to revolve, yokes removably positioned on the trunnions of one of said rolls, and a third roll supported by said yokes and held thereby in contact with the first-mentioned rolls, said yokes having fingers thereon projected under the trunnions of one of the first-mentioned rolls, and holding the last-mentioned roll in contact with the first-mentioned rolls, substantially as described.
5. An inking mechanism of the character described, comprising movable members, a plurality of inking rolls carried by said members and adapted to contact with the inking plate, a distributing roll contacting with two 01"- said first mentioncd rolls, yokes supporting the distributing roll and removably positioned on the trunnions of one of said first-mentioned rolls, said rolls being of different diameters, said yokes having fingers thereon projected under the trunnions of one of the first-mentioned rolls, and holding the last-mentioned roll in contact with the first-mentioned rolls, substantially as described.
6. An inking mechanism comprising movable means, two rolls having their trunnions supported in the movable means, trucks secured to the trunnions of said rolls and cansing said rolls to revolve, yokes removably positioned on the trunnions of one of said rolls, a third roll supported by said yokes and held thereby in contact with the firstm ntioned rolls, said rolls being 01. diiierent diameters, said yokes having fingers thereon projected under the trunnions of one of the first-mentioned rolls, and holding the lastmentioned roll in contact with the first-mentioned rolls, substantially as described.
T. in an inking mechanism, the combination with two rolls spaced apart and having trunnions thereon, trucks on said trunnions transmitting rotary motion to the rolls, yo-kes having openings therein receiving the trunnions of one of the rolls, and a third roll, said yokes having openings therein supporting the trunnions of the third roll, and fingers on the yokes projected under the trunnions of one of the first-mentioned rolls and holding the last-mentioned roll in contact with both of the first-mentioned rolls, substantially as described.
