I I 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
In the particular machine illustrated, the sheet supports operate to support the sheets on the sides only, thereby avoiding as far as possible contact between the sheets and the sheet supports. With a construction such as described in which the sheet supports operate to carry the sheets on the sides only, there is liability that the sheets being unsupported at -theircenters will sag. The ysupports will, therefore, in the best constructions be so constructed as to prevent this sagging. While this may be done in various ways, it may be eifectively accomplished by so constructing the supports as to V'bend the sheets out of line at the sides, this bending of thesheets at the sides serving to stiften them. In the particular construction illustrated, the Abending of the sheets is effected by concaving the bars slightly, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, 'so that when the 'sheets are deposited thereon they .will be bent up at their sides. The sheetv receiver or receivers, if more than one be employed, will be intermittently Amoved from the sheet receiving to the sheet delivering position. The means by which this intermittent movement is accomplished may be of any suitable character. In the particular'construction illustrated, the shafts -20 which carry thev upper sprockets are provided with miter gears 27 in mesh with slmillar .ears 28 on a shaft 29 suitably sup orted in the frame. The shaft 29 is provided with i a gear 30 which is one of a train of gears 4o indicated at 31, which train may be operated from a ratchet wheel 32 supported on'a stud 33 extending from the frame. This ratchet wheel may be operated by any suitable pawl mechanism, not illustrated, construction of this character being well understood in the art. In thebest constructions, however, this movement will be such as to give the sprockets a quarter turn so that the sheet supports on the oppositely disposed to Vcarriers will be brought into sheet receiving position, thus avoiding any movement of the sheet supports with respect to the sheets after the sheets have been placed thereupon. While the sheets might be removed from the sheet receivers in various ways, in the best constructions including the invention, pile -delivery mechanism will be employed. This pile delivering mechanism may be variously constructed but in the particular machine shown it includes a conveyer consisting of a series of chains 34 which are supported by sprockets 35, 36, these sprockets being supported on shafts 37, 38. The conveyer chains, if desired., may be provided with spacing projections, indicated at 39. The
menace between the inner ends of the sheet receivers, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, and, further, will be such a distance from the rev ceiving position of the receivers, that as the receiver carriers are given the quarter turn referred to, the ends of the sheet supports will pass the sides of the conveyer, thus de* positing the pile of sheets thereon. It will be observed that at the-time the receiversare moving from receiving to delivering position the movement is a parallel one, so that the sheets are deposited on the conveyer without displacing the sheets.
If desired, supports, as 40, may be provided on each side of the conveyer, which supports will when employed, be so arranged as to bear only on the margins of the sheets, thus preventing the sheets from bending downward and at the saineA time not smudging the sheets. These supports may be madeof polished steel bars. In the particular construction illustrated, they are carried by brackets 41 supported on cross rods 42. The conveyer chains, to prevent sagging, may be provided at suitable distances apart with rolls 43 which run on supporting tracks 44 carried on the cross rods 42 before referred to.
The conveyer, when it is employed, may be operated in any suitable manner. In the construction illustrated, the shaft 38 is a driven shaft and is given a step by step vmovement by a ratchet wheel 45 and a pawl 4G, this pawl being worked through connections 47 of the usual type from a cam or eccentric on the shaft 2. v
To prevent overthrow of the sheets, as they are delivered by the delivering cylinder, there may be employed, if desired, sheet stops 48 so located that the forward edge of the sheet will strike themas they are released by the grippers 5, the sheets being thus caused to settle evenly on the sheet receivers. 'f Y Changes and variations may he made in the constructions by which the invention is carried into effect. The invention is not,
therefore, to be limited to the specic construction herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
'What is claimed is 1. The combination with a plurali y of sheet receivers which are successively brought into receiving position, of means for giving the vreceivers a movement after a plurality of sheets have been placed upon one of them to carry a filled receiverand the sheets thereon iiatwise and to bring an empty receiver intoreceiving pcm'tion, a pile delivery mechanism in the path of the llled receiver to which it delivers the sheets, andA nLeans for positively delivering the sheetsY liatwise' to the sheet receivers.A
. brought into receiving position, of means 4. The combination with sheet delivering of the filled receiver to which it delivers the Athe Sheets and delivering them, the movesheet supports. on one carrier coperating "to form sheet receivers, means for operating :aosaaoe A2. The combination with a plurality of i sheet receivers which are suceessively,|
l for giving the rece1vers a movement after a i plurality of sheets have been placed upon one of them to carry a filled receiver and i the sheets thereon liatwise and to bring an to the sheet receivers, a conveyer in the path sheets, -and means for operating the conveyer to forward the pile of sheets edgewise.
3. The combination With sheet delivering means, of a sheet receiver comprising a plurality of sheet supports, carriers on which the supports are mounted, and means for operating the carriers to bring the component sheet supports ofeach receiver into line with each other in position for receiving ment of the supports from receiving to delivering positions being a parallel movement.
means2 of a plurality of oppositely arranged traveling carriers, a plurality of sheet supports similarly arranged on the carriers, the
with the sheet supports on the other carrier to form sheet receivers, means for operating the carriers to move the sheet supports successively into line with each other and ioln` sheet receiving to sheet delivering positions, and a pile delivery mechanism to 'Which said receivers deliver. 5. The combination with sheet deliverin means, of a plurality of oppositely arranged traveling carriers, a plurality of sheet supports similarly arranged on the carriers, the sheet supports 0none carrier coperating with the sheet supports on the other carrier @opten of this patent may be obtained for areY cents ports similarly arranged on the carriers, the
sheet supports on one carrier cooperating Wit-h the sheet supports on the other carrier to form sheet receivers, a conveyer in the path of novement of the supports, and means for operating the carriers to nieve the supports into line` With eachother in sheet receiving position and to the conveyer, the movement of the supports from t-he receiving position to the conveyer being a parallel movement.
T. The combination ivithvsheetdelivering means, of a plurality of sheet receivers operating to support. the sheets at the sides only, each sheet receiver being made up of a plurality of sheet supports, the operating surfaces of the supports being constructed to bend the sheets out of line, and means for bringing the receivers successively into co-` operation With the sheet delivery means.
S. The combination with sheet delivering means, of a plurality of sheet receivers, each receiver comprising a plurality of independent sheet supports constructed to bend the sides of the sheets out of line, and means for bringing the supports forming each receiver successively into receiving position.
