CLARENCE S. MGCORD, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
SIFTING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1914.
Application filed July 30, 1912. Serial No. 712,339.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE S. MoConD, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vashington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sifting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sifters or shakers such as are adapted for distributing over an area granulated or powdered material such as salt, pepper, talcum powder and the like or such as are employed in the operation of separating coarsely granulated material from fine granulated material to classify the same and the object of my improvement is to provide a sitter in association with a holder or receptacle that shall be adapted readily to separate the fine from coarse granulated material and that shall be further adapted widely and evenly to distribute such material over a surface and a further object of my improvement is to provide a sifter whose outlet perforations shall be adjustable each with respect to its size or with respect to its form and another object of my improvement is to provide a sifter having outlet perforations from which obstructive material readily may be removed. I attain these ob jects by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing which by a fragmentary view shows a structure embodying my invention, wherein 21 is a metal cap of circular form adapted to be fixed upon a receptacle, as a pepper box or a salt shaker, to cover it, which cap 21 is provided with aplurality of openings radially disposed between its central portion and its outer edge each of which openings has one of its edges straight and disposed on a line radiating from the center of the cap 21 while the opposite edge of each of said openings is serrated in such manner that the apexes of the notches formed may register with a line radiating from the center of said cap 21 whereby the notches re- 2 speetively are proportionately deeper and coarser as their distance from the center of said cap 21 is greater.
A cap cover 22 is concentrically disposed on cap 21 to be rotatable on a pivot 17 a projection 18 being provided on its outer edge to serve as means for better grasping the cap cover 22 to turn it. The said cap cover 22 is also provided with openings corresponding in number, in form and disposition except that the serrated edges of such openings have their apexes point in a direction that is opposite that of the apexes of the serrated edges of the openings in the cap 21, as shown in the drawing, whereby the structure thus formed by the cap 21 and the cap cover 22, when fixed upon a receptacle, is adapted to be adjusted by turning the cap cover 22 in a clock-wise direction on pivot 17, to form a plurality of outlet holes of the smallest conceivable size, which outlet holes may be enlarged to any extent within the capacity of the openings.
What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, a cap adapted to be fastened upon the top of a receptacle to cover such receptacle, a cap cover rotatably and concentrically pivoted upon said cap, said cap and said cap cover each being provided with a plurality of openings radially disposed between its central portion and its outer edge, each of said openings having one of its radial edges serrated to form notches therein, the apexes of said notches being all disposed to register with a line radiating from the center of said cap and the openings in said cap being disposed so that the apexes of their notches may point in a direction opposite to the direction in which point the apexes of the notches of the openings of said cap cover.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 25 day of July A. D., 1912.
CLARENCE S. MoCORD.
