To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAXYMILIAN J. MYSZKIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music- Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to music leaf turners and has special reference to a turner operable by means of a sliding button located on the music rack.

The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this description.

A second object of the invention is to provide a novel means for slightly raising the dliferent leaves before they are acted on by the main operating member.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement by means of which the leaves are held open, the arrangement being held out of the way during the turning operation.

Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with certain cover plates removed, the view showing the position with the leaf ready for turning. Fig. 2 is a view showing the parts at the end of the turning movement. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 33, Fig. 4. Fig. l is a transverse sec tion through Fig. 3 with certain of the parts removed. Fig. is a detail perspective view showing the position of the parts just prior to the completion of the end of the return stroke. Fig. 6 is a detail section through a certain casing used in connection herewith. Fig. 7 is a view of a certain guide used herewith. Fig. 8 is a detail section through the mechanism which gives the leaf the initial movement. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective of a tilting bar in connection with the mechanism shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is a view of a certain plate used to carry this tilting lever. Fig. 11 is a detail view of a certain link used in connection herewith. Fig. 12 is a perspective view of a rotating plate used in connection with this device.

In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a stand 20 having a frame 21 thereon adapted to receive the music, the leaves of which are indicated at 22. Each of these leaves of music is provided with a loop of thread 23 adjacent the lower right hand corner for purposes hereinafter to be described.

On the bottom of the board or base 20 is a ledge 24 whereon is secured a casing 25 which is also secured to the board 20. This casing 25 is provided with a slot 26 extending longitudinally thereof and within the casing is located a guide consisting of a plate 27 having angularly disposed ends 28 provided with suitable openings 29 for the reception of a rod 30. On the rod 30 there is provided a block 31 which is fixed upon the rod and from this block a stem 32 X- tends through the slot 26 and is provided on its outer end with a knob 33 so that by moving the knob the rod may be moved.

Located a little to the right of the center of the device is a standard 34 which is revolubly mounted in suitable bearings formed on a base plate 35 and a U-shaped plate 36, the legs whereof are attached to the base plate. Surrounding this standard is a coiled spring 37 which constantly urges the standard in the direction of the hands of a clock, the spring being secured by suitable means as at 38 to the base plate 35. The central portion of the standard is rectangular as can be seen by reference to Fig. i and carried on its central port-ion is a bar 39 to which is pivoted a link 40. On this portion of the standard above the bar 39 there is also provided a plate 41 and this plate has a projecting lip 42 thereon against which a pin 43 carried by the link 10 engages when the link is folded inward, as shown in Fig. 1.

The link 40 is connected by means of a wire 44 with the end of the bar 30 so that when the knob 33 is moved to the right the standard will be caused to rotate.

From the bar 39 projects an arm 45 which carries on its outer end a button 46 preferably of ivory or the like.

Just to the left of the base plate 35 is a base plate 4:7 provided with upstanding ears 48 wherethrough passes a rod 19 provided with a crank arm 50. This rod 49 is provided with a laterally extending rock arm 51 having diverging arms 52 which are arranged to rest against the music leaves and hold the same from accidentally turning over. The member 49 is surrounded by a spring 53 one end of which engages the arm 51 while the other bears against the plate d7. By this means the spring normally urges the arm 51 in the direction of the music. Depending from the plate 411 is a cam 54 which is so arranged that when the plate is rotated this cam will engage the crank 50 and move the arm 51 away from the music so that the leaves ar free to turn.

In order to give the leaves the preliminary movement necessary to insure their being raised, adjacent the lower right hand corner of the music rack there is pr vided a standard 55 which supports a spring box 50 containing a spring 57 one end of which is secured to a spindle 58 while the other end is secured in a suitable manner to the box. On the upper end of the spindle 58 is fixed a plate 59 provided with an end 60 arranged to engage a stop 61 on the spring box 5'0 and thereby limit the movement of the plate in one direction. This plate is furthermore provided with an extension 62 having ears 63 formed at its outer end. These ears receive the pivot 64: whereon rocks a lever 65 likewise provided with ears 66 through which said pivot passes. This lever 65 is provided adjacent its lower end with a pair of ears 67 wherethrough passes a pin 68 surrounded by a coil spring (59 one end of which is prolonged and bears against one end of the lever as at 70 while the other end is pro longed in the opposite direction and passes through a keeper 71. This last-mentioned end of the spring is also provided with a terminal hook 7 2 for purposes hereinafter to be described. Fixed upon the lever (55 is a downwardly extending arm 73, and the arm is normally held with the hook end in raised aosition by means of a coil spring 74 terminating in an arm 75 which passes beneath the arm 7 3.

Projecting from the plate 59 is a hook 7 6 from which extends an arm 77 terminating in spaced lugs 7 8. Secured to the standard is an arm 7 9 provided with a stop member against which the arm 77 engages to limit the movement of the plate 59 in a direction opposite that of its limitation by the members 60 and 61.

In the operation of the device the parts are started in the position shown in Fig. 1 with the hook 71 engaged in the loop 78 of the page it is desired to be turned. Upon moving the knob to the right the rod to which the knob is connected will pull upon the wire at and through the medium of the link and stop as will cause the rotation of the center device. As this device rotates it moves the arm 15 so that the button ll) passes beneath the slightly raised leaf. As

the button passes beneath this leaf and the arm continues to rotate the czrn engages the crank arm and raises the arm 51 so that the leaves are free to turn. As the movement g es on the motion of the arm 4-5 and button 41:6 pulls the loop 23 off of the hook 72 and turns the leaf over. Upon releasing the button the center parts of the device each. assume its original positions but the arm 4:5 strikes the lower end of the arm 73 and. forces the same downward toward. the ledge until this arm engages the member 77. Thereupon this arm causes the rotation of the plate 55) until the hook is forced down and brought behind the next succeeding loop. Then the arm 77 strikes the stop 80 the arm 45 will slip off of the lower end of the arm 77 and thereby release the hook which first swings around until it engages the loop and then springs upward since the inner spring 57 is much heavier and quicker to operate than the light spring. This restores the parts to their original positions.

ln order to hide the several parts from view suitable covers 81 may be provided.

There has thus been provided a simple andeflieient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified.

In a music leaf turner, a standard, a plate pivoted to said standard, a spring normally urging said plate to revolve in one direction, a secondary arm carried by said plate, a lever pivoted on. said plate and 1novable at right angles to said plate, an arm projecting from said lever, a spring normally holding one end of said lever in raised position, a spring carried by said lever and provided with a loop-engaging hook, a leaf turning arm, means for operating said leaf turning arm, the arm projecting from said lever lying in the path of said leaf turning arm, said leaf turning arm adapted to bear upon the lower portion of the arm extending from said lever whereby said lever and the spring carried thereby will be swung downwardly for allowing said arm of said lever to enga e said secondary arm whereby said plate Will be swung to one side so as to allow said hook to engage a sheet of music.

2. In a music leaf turner, a standard, a plate pivoted to said standard, a spring normally urging said plate to revolve in one direction, a lever pivoted on said plate and movable at right angles to said plate, an arm projecting from said lever, a. springnormally holding one end of said lever in raised position, a spring carried by said lever and provided with a loop-engaging hook, a leaf turning arm, means to operate said leaf turning arm, a stop-arm carried by said plate and lying in the path of the arm projecting from the lever, and a stop-arm carried by said standard to limit the movement of said plate, the last-mentioned stop-arm lying in the path of the first-mentioned stoparm as the plate rotates, said leaf turning arm adaptedto bear upon the lower portion of the arm carried by said lever for swinging said lever downwardly whereby the arm will engage the stop-arm carried by said plate whereby said plate will rotate until the stoparm of said plate engages the stop-arm carried by said standard for limiting the rotation of said plate and for allowing said hook to engage a sheet of music.

In a music leaf turner, a leaf lifting means, a leaf turning means provided with a revoluble plate a depending cam carried by said plate, said leaf lifting means adapted to lift the leaf for allowing said turning means to engage the same, a rod adapted to operate said leaf turning means, a leaf holding clamp, said clamp adapted to hold the music in position and comprising a plate, a rod provided with a crank arm carried by said plate, a rock-arm carried by said rod and provided with diverging arms, a spring carried by said rod for normally holding said diverging arms in engagement with the music, said cam adapted to engage said crank arm when said revoluble plate is rotated, whereby said diverging arms will move away from the music and allow the same to turn.

In a music leaf turner, a standard, a plate pivoted to said standard, said plate comprising a central body provided with a projecting portion terminating in a laterally extending stop, a laterally bent arm formed upon said body and terminating in a plurality of spaced lugs, an extension carried by saidbody and provided with a plurality of ears, a spring normally urging said plate to revolve in one direction, a lever pivoted to said ears and movable at right angles to said plate, an arm projectin from said lever, a spring normally holding one end of said lever in a raised position, a spring carried by said lever and provided with a leaf engaging hook, a leaf turning arm, means for operating said leaf turning arm, the arm projecting from said lever lying in the path of said leaf turning arm, said laterally bent arm carried by said plate lying in the path of the arm projecting from said lever for constituting a stop for said last mentioned arm, a stop-arm carried by said standard and positioned in the path of said laterally extending arm of said plate as said plate rotates, whereby said leaf engaging hook will be swung downwardly and to one side for engaging a sheet of music.

5. In a music leaf turner, a leaf lifting means, a leaf turning means, said leaf lifting means adapted to raise the leaf so that the leaf may be engaged by said turning arm, said leaf turning means comprising a base plate, a revoluble cam-shaped plate mounted upon said base plate, a leaf turning arm carried upon said revoluble plate, said plate provided with a projecting lip, a link pivoted adjacent the edge of said plate and terminating near said projecting lip when in a closed position and a wire attached to said link, an operating rod attached to said wire and adapted to operate said revolublo plate, said wire connected to said link by means of a pin, said link normally extending upon the periphery of said plate and said pin resting behind said projecting lip, whereby the strain of starting the plate to revolve will be partially taken up by said pin bearing upon said projecting lip.

6. In a music leaf turner, a support, a rotating means carried by said support, means normally urging said rotating means in one direction, a lever carried by said rotating means at right angles thereto, means for holding one end of said lever in a raised position, a leaf engaging means carried by said lever, a leaf turning arm, means for operating said leaf turning arm and an arm projecting from said lever and adapted to be engaged by said turning arm, whereby said lever will be swung downwardly and to one side for allowing said leaf engaging means to engage a leaf of music for raising the same whereby the leaf may be engaged by said leaf turning arm.
