RAILWAY-SWITCH STAND.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ASHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Switch Stands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is especially designed for use in mines or temporary construction work in which it is desirable to employ a switch with parallel throw which may be operated by the motorman or other train employee, and which requires little space for installation. The obvious requirements for such switch stands are ease and certainty of operation and quick action. It is also highly desirable that the switch should be automatically and certainly reset by trains coming from the rear. The chief objection to the stands in general use are the number of parts, use of intermediate gearing, the consequent difficulty and tardiness of operation, and the lack of certainty of re-setting by trains coming from the rear.
The object of my invention is to provide a switch stand of simple construction, with the possible minimum of gearing, the possible maximum of ease, rapidity and certainty of operation, and which will be automatically re-set by trains coming from the rear.
My invention consists in the parts and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a switch stand embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan View of the same.
The reference numeral 1 denotes main track railway rails, 2 a switch point, 3 branch rails, 4t railway ties, 5 an operating lever, fulcrumed upon a pivot 6 mounted in a base 7, and having its lower end beveled and adapted to engage with the walls of a notch 8 in one arm of a horizontally disposed angle lever 9 fulcrumed upon a pivot 10 mounted in the base. The other arm of the angle lever is pivotally connected, at 11, with the switch rod 12. The notch 8 is comparatively narrow at its open end and comparatively wide at its closed end. This precludes disengagement of the lever from the angle lever after erection of the stand. The operating lever preferably carries a weight 13.
In operation, when the operating lever is thrown in either direction, its lower end engages with one of the walls of the notch in the angle lever and actuates the latter there by actuating the switch rod.
In approaching the switch from the rear. the lightest car will throw the switch, if not set to make the connection, instead of climbing the rail.
1 claim as my invention:
The combination, in a switch stand, of a base; a switch rod; a connecting rod; a lever having a single bearing; an angle lever fulcrumed onthe base, one arm of the angle lever being notched to receive the operating lever and the other arm being connected with the switch rod, the notch in the angle lever being comparatively narrow at its open end and wide at its closed end.
