SADDLE-BLCK FOR CAR-ROOFS.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN Plains, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Michigan City, county of Laporte, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddle-Blocks for Car-Roofs, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying dr'awings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to means for binding the roofing plates to the car frame; its objects being to provide a simple and etlicient construction, as hereinafter' pointed out.
The invention consists of the structure as described and illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail transverse section of the car roof; Fig. 2 is a detail plan view thereof, some parts being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the saddle block and rod forming features of the invention.
The car roof comprises plates 10 of any suitable form mounted upon the framing, of which there is shown a ridge pole 11 and an cave plate 12. Saddle blocks 13 are mounted upon the ridge of the roof, as many being employed as may be found advisable. Binding rods 14, 15, are secured to each saddle block and extend to the eaves of the car, their outer ends being turned inwardly in passing through the eave plate l2, as shown, and being secured in any suitable manner, as by means of a nut 1G. Cross bars 17 are mounted upon and secured to the saddle blocks and form a support for the running boards 18.
Each saddle block is a casting preferably of malleable iron, and comprises a body or shank portion 19, preferably a T-section, its under face conforming to the ridge of the roof. At each end of the body portion there is formed a hollow head 20, having feet 21, 22, providing extended bearing surfaces for resting upon the roofing plate, and a cross member 23 at the outer end of the head apertured to receive the inner end of one of the rods, as 15. The cross member 23 is outwardly and upwardly inclined, so that the end of the rod is inclined upwardly and Specication of Letters Patent.

properly positioned for receiving a retaining nut 24, which draws against the inner face of the member 23. An outwardly project-ing lug 25 is formed on the outer face of the member 23 above the rod aperture, its outer end bearing downwardly upon the rod to hold it in engagement with the rooling plate. The heads 20 form seats for the cross-bar 17, and each is provided with an upstanding apertured flange 26 through which and the cross-bar a retaining bolt 27 may be passed. The eXtreme length of the saddle is somewhat greater than that of the, cross-bar 17, thereby giving access to the retaining nut 2a for the purpose of tightening up or releasing the binding rods without removing the running boa-rd.
l claim as my invention- 1. A Saddle block for car roofs comprising a body portion adapted to seat upon the ridge of a roof, and heads, each head having` a transverse apertured member for engaging a binding rod and a lug located above its aperture for bearing upon such rod.
2. A saddle block for oar roofs comprising a body portion adapted to seat upon the ridge of a roof, and heads, each head forming a seat for a running board support and having a transverse apertured member for engaging a binding' rod and a lug located above its aperture for bearing upon such rod.
3. A saddle block for car roofs comprising a body portion adapted to seat upon the ridge of a roof, and heads, each head forming a seat for a running board support and having a transverse apertured member for engaging a binding rod and a lug located above its aperture for bearing upon such rod, and an upstanding lug` to which the running board support may be secured.
