IMPROVEMENT IN PlsToN-PACKING.
m The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and 4marking peut of `the same.
To all whom it may concern.:
15e it known that I, LAWRECE TURNER, of New Orleans, in the parish of ,Orleans and State of Louisiana, have in'vcntcd a new and improved Piston-Facking; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying draw'- ing forming part of this specification, in which-v Figure 1 represents a. vertical section of a steam-'- cylinder' provided with my improved piston.

section of the same.
Figure 3 lis a detail horizontal 'Figurel 4 is detail side View of the same.
Figure 54's a top View ofthe hand-hole cover in the cylinder top.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates toa new packing for the pistons of steam-cylinders, and has for its objcct to facil- Aitate the adjustment of the rings, and prevent the which can be worked to spread or contract said spring,
and to thereby increase or reduce thc diameter of the piston, whose outer sides are formed by split rings.
. A. in the drawing represents the stcam-oyliluler, of suitable construction.
B .is thc core or hub.ofthepist-on.v v U C are the splitouter rings, whichconstitute the' outer peripheryof the piston.
Within thenris placed the expanding spring D, which is bent to fit against their inner faces.
The ends of the'spring l) do not moet, as shown-in tig. 3, but Vcarry inwardly-projecting bracket-s, a a.
Between the ends ofthe spring D is interposed my improved expansion lock, 12.'.
lhc same consists ot'two plates, b and c, which are held apart and connected fby means of bolts d d.
` as shown in'fig. 1.
Betweeirthe plates b caretwo pivoted or swinging v `springs,` F, F, which hang on pins e, that pass through horizontal slotsofthe plates b c, as shown in tig. 2.
'llhe'ends of the springs FF rest against the ends of the' spring D. G is a wedge-shaped block, suspended from a screwor screw-bolt, I- of thepiston. 1
The wedge G, when forced down, will enter between the -springs F,and, forcing themapart against the ends of the spring D, which ist-hereby expanded to spread the rings .(2. f
Ghafing-plates, ,e e, are or may heinterposed between the ends of` Athefsp'rings. F' and D, to`prevent excessive friction duringthe adjustment ofthe springs.-
' The wedgeis adjusted up or down by turning the the lbolt H, which can be d one by Vmeans of a wrench, J.
For the introduction of this wrench a. hand-hole, f,-
is provided in th'e upper head of the cylinder. This hand-hole is closed by a plate, g, whenv the wrench is not r equired.
A shoulder, h, is formed on thehubl B, of soft or other metal, for lholding the springring D in contact witlrthc outer rings A Excessive friction on the contiguous edges of the rings C is prevented by the insertion'of Va soft-metal ring, z', within the Havingthus described my invention, yI claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. .'lfhe adjustable springs F, held in slotted plates.
b c, and combined with the spring D and adjustable wedge G, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The chafiug plates e e, .interposed between the adjusting-springs F l and the eipandug spring vD,
' substantially as'herein shown and described. 3. The vertically-adjustable wedge Gr, suspended from the screw-bolt H, for the purpose ot' expanding the rings of the piston, substantially as herein shown XVitnesses: j JOHN HAYES', JAMES BROWN.
,.whiclris swiveled in the upper plate' gl-ooved edge ofv onc'of said rings, y
