NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 5, 1913. Serial No. 777,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, New ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hurley, in the county of Turner and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to nut-locks, and has for its object the construction of a de-' vice of this class inexpensive in manufacture yet thoroughly reliable in operation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of integral locking means which does not protrude from the bolt and has no removable key or other parts.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in'which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,-
Figure 1 is a plan view of a nut constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and locked upon a bolt; Fig. t is an enlarged perspective View of the boltengaging key.
The invention consists of a nut provided with an angled groove in one face thereof; and an angled key journaled within said groove; armed with bolt-engaging means and normally secured by spring engagement of the key within the groove, all of which will presently be made more clear.
Referring, now, to the illustrations, 5 is a nut, of any suitable shape, provided with an angled groove, as that formed by the intersecting grooves, 6 and 7 the former of which communicates with the threaded opening of the nut. The key I prefer to employ comprises the cylindrical member, 8; the handle, 9, formed integrally therewith and disposed at an angle thereto; and a lug portion, 10, carried by the member, 8. The key portion, 8, is free to turn within the groove, 6, and is secured therein in any edges of the groove over the key, as clearly indicated at 11.
Prior to turning or unturning the nut upon a bolt, the key is turned into the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and when in such position, the cam, or eccentric, 10, will lie outwardly from the bolt and within a notch, 12 in the nut provided to admit it. lVhen the nut is turned to the desired point, the key is turned inwardly and the arm, or handle, 9, sprung into the groove, 7, by virtue of which, displacement of the handle is prevented and the cam securely impressed into the threaded portion of the bolt. The nut is readily unlocked by inserting a pointed instrument at the point, 13, between the end of the handle and the bottom of the groove, 7.
Where nuts are not turned into engagement with seats, as is the case with vehicleaXle burs, etc., the bolt, or externally-threaded members, may be provided with longitudinal slots, as at 14, Fig. 3, adapted to re ceive the cam. By virtue of this arrangement the threads are not mutilated by engagement of the cam.
