To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. OLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city of Riverside, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Boiler-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automatic boiler cleaning devices and particularly to the class in which a vessel is maintained in a suitable portion of a boiler to collect sediment from the water as it is circulated in the boiler.
The object of this improvement is to provide a device of this character which will be simple of construction and eflicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a flue boiler provided with a. cleaning device built in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a view, in perspective, of the cleaning device broken away to show its internal construction, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of a boiler equipped with my device, Fig. 4 is a fragmental section of the cleaning device showing the means for supporting one end of the same, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section of a flue boiler provided with a cleaning device made in accordance with my invent-ion.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a boiler 6 having conventional lines 7 and a man-hole 8 provided with the usual stopping cover 9.
The cleaning device proper consists of a vessel 10 having a curved bottom portion and an open top port-ion with its longitudinal top edges turned inwardly and down-V wardly forming flanges 11. Secured longitudinally through the central portion of the vessel 10 and below the'flanges 11 are angular battle plates 12. Defleoting plates 13 are secured above and outwardly from the top edges of the vessel 10 in such a manner so as to direct currents of water passing upover such vessel. are secured to supporting bars 14 which in wardly around the vessel 10 to a position The deflecting plates 13 turn are suspended by rods 15 and such rods 15 are secured to certain of the tubes 7, by
means of plates 16 and nut 17 as clearly illustrated. The deflecting plates 13 serve a further function of spacing the bars 14 in rigid relation. I
Arms 18 are secured to one end of the vessel 10, by means of rivets l9 and are adapted to rest on one of the bars 14 to support the end of the vessel 10. A spring member 20 is also secured to the same end of the vessel 10 by means of rivets 21 and curved in such a mannerthat its upper end 22 will engage the lower side of the bar 14 to frictionally lock the arm members 18 on the bar 14. The other end of the vessel 10 is provided with a U-shape bar 23 secured to the sides of said vessel by means of rivets 24. A second bar 25 is also secured to the vessel 10 by means of rivets 26 and bent in substantially the shape shown and provided with an eye 27 in its free end. An eye 28 is formed in the bight portion of the U shape bar 23 in alinement with the eye 27, and a bolt 29 is removably secured in said eyes in a. manner to lock the U-shape link 30 to support the front end of the vessel 10 as clearly illustrated.
A blow off pipe 31 is inserted in the boiler 6 and divided into two legs and inserted in the vessel 10 between the bafile plates 12 with their openings near the bottom of the vessel 10 so that upon opening such blow off pipe when the boiler is under steam pressure the suction caused at the mouth of the pipe 31 will take up any sediment deposited in the vessel 10 blowing it out through the blow olf pipe 31.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated my device as applied to a water tube boiler. The main features of the device are the same as when applied to the flue boiler, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 with the exception of the deflecting plates 13. In the water tube boiler construction the deflecting plates 32 are preferably positioned as illustrated in this figure.
In operation the cleaning device is preferably placed immediately over the crown sheet of a flue boiler or in the water tube boiler at the point at which the hot water reaches the boiler and the circulating water being deflected by deflecting plates 13 and 32 causes portions of the water to move over the vessel 10 where the circulation will be deadened or swirled and upon contacting with the flanges 11 and 12 will be caused to deposit any sediment carried by the water into the vessel 10. hen it is desired the sediment is blown off through the blow oil pipe 81 as already described.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invent-ion into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A boiler cleaning device comprising; a vessel adapted to be supported in a boiler; inwardly extending flanges on upper edges of said vessel; battle plates disposed longitudinally in said Vessel; and blow oft pipes entering said vessel between said flanges and said baflle plates and extending to near the bottom of said vessel, substantially as described.
2. A boiler cleaning device comprising; a vessel adapted to be supported in a boiler; deflecting plates near upper edges of said vessel, a portion of each deflecting plate be ing disposed vertically and the remaining partbeing inclined outwardly and downwardly, substantially as described.
3. A boiler cleaning device comprising; a vessel adapted to be supported in a boiler; inwardly extending flanges on upper edges of said vessel; and deflecting plates supported near upper edges of said vessel, a portion of each deflecting plate being disposed vertically and the remaining part being inclined outwardly and downwardly, substantially as described.

inwardly extending flanges on upper edges of said vessel; baffle plates disposed longitudinally in said vessel; blow oii pipes entering said vessel between said flanges and said baflie plates with openings near the bottom of said vessel; and deflecting plates supported near the top portion of said vessel, substantially as described.
5. A boiler cleaning device comprising;
.bars spaced apart and supported in a boiler;
vessel in said boiler; arms on said vessel and resting on one of said bars; a link on the other of said bars; and a connection between said link and said vessel, substantially as described.
6. A boiler cleaning device comprising bars spaced apart and adapted to be supported in a boiler; a vessel in said boiler; arms on said vessel and resting on one of said bars; a bolt mounted on said vessel; and a link pivoted on the other of said bars and removably connected with said bolt, substantially as described.
7. A boiler cleaning device comprising bars spaced apart and adapted to be supported in a boiler; a vessel in said boiler; arms on said vessel and resting on one of said bars; a resilient member on said vessel frictionally locking said arms on said bar; a bolt mount-ed 011 said vessel; and a link pivoted on the other of said bars and removably connected with said bolt, substantially as described.
