- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April. 8, 1912, Serial No. 889,259.
liatented Feb. 3 391i i.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Wit-man A. Hrnmmu,
a citizen of the United States, residing; at
ylfllgin, in the county of Kane and State of l;l l inois ;have invented a' new and useful Concrete Silo, of which the following; is a specification. 1
The device herein disclosed is intended as mi improvement upon the structure shown inthe patent to Sterling 'E. Playford.- No. 850,048, 190?. In constructing device in accordance with the showing of the said patent, it has been found that the constituent blocks 15 slip laterally, one upon theothen at their A further object-ct the invention is to devise a device of this type inwhich relative movcn'ient betweeuthe members is; prevented by the provisionflof a t'ansverse head extended beyond ELls'CillI engaging ihe ed e' of one member, the securing band being appliedio such a head. thereby to reinforce thesamc.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in rich, which will appear as the description proceeds. the invention resides 3:. the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter 'ocscribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed canbe made within the scope of What is'claimed withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention. In the drawings,-Figure 1 shows the 1n-- vention in perspective; Fig. 2 1s a top plan of a pair of elements which are employed inthe structure shown in Fig. i; Fig. 3 is a section of the yoke to receive the ends of the securing-band; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section showing a modified form of the invention. I i The device herein disclosed is adapted to be eniplovcd in the construction of silos, culverts, watcr'tanltsand like structiires.
Prcsupposing thatthc device employed in the construction of a silo, the numeral 1 granted upon .the 9th day of April,-
iudicatcs a suitable foundation upon which the superstructure.is placed. The super-- structure consists of a plurality of simih 1' plates, each plate being denoted generally by the numeral Each plate fhshioned in one edge with a coueaved scatll and is over range the seat 3. Extended longitudina-lly of the head i is a reinforcing element 5 preferably taking the form of a rod. The opposite longitudinal edge of the plate 2 is convexed as indicated at. i so as to fit in the seat. 3 of an adjoining plate.
A series of plates 2 the manner shown in Fig. l, the lower ends of the plates re ting upon the foundation l. Around the outside of the structure is ex tended a securing band 7, the securing band 7 being disposed transversely of the reinforcing elements and engaging" the outer faces oflthe heads The securing"baud 7 is spaced apart from theplaieproper The ends oflhe securing baud T enter an arched yoke-member R. and nuts .i applied to the threadedends of the band 7 and on tening the band about the silo. The intermediate portion of the yoke 8 is concaved as indicated at-lll in order to strengthen the y Owing to the fact that theheads 4: overhang the recesses 3 it will be scenthat outward movement of the rounded edges 6 of the plates 2 Will be prevented positively. A leakage between the longitudinal edges of head 4- serves to reinforce one plate against strain imposed by the adjacent edge of an adjoining platq and the head 4- is greatly strengthened by'reason of'the fact that the head ?i. is reinforced by the element 5 which. is located therein, The heads tare engaged by the band 7 and consequently outward plates 2 is"prevented. Since tl1eplatcs can not move transversely upon each other at their point of juncture, the strain is dis tributed length of the band 7. v
It to be noted that each plate with its head 4- and "its recess 3 constitutes a retaining member adapted to receive the rounded edge of an adjoining plate.
If desired. the structure may he modified to the'cxtcnt indicated in Fig. 4. Under such circumstances, the retaining members are intcrengaged in.
gaging the yoke 8 constitute a means for tig the plates will thereby be prevented. The
movement. oi the interchanged ends of the equally throughout .the entire equipped with an outstanding head i which.
4 are of T shape. and cmnprise n head 11 and a shank 152, the shank 12 being prc'vlded with rqipond seats 01" recsses lL, aclpte't to l'QCQiVC the rounded ends Of the plates.
Tin plates denoted. by the HLHIIQI'ZLi 2 may be employed in Fig. 4, and, if desired, the plates 15, both edges of which zn'a rounded as shown at -16, may be engaged in the semis H- 01? the shank 12 of Hlfihlfitiliflillg member 11.- The head 11 of the retaining member equipped, hereinhefore described, ini n rcing element 17, the. fnncjtion of which has been pqinieni out hereinheiii'ore, The
'(lllillfi band 18 is extendcdnronnd the strnc hire and ongageS thuhcad L of tin; pl te 2, the shcnrlng hand engaging also the sagads 11 of the retaining lnvn'ihrs. It will of course be nnderstond that in practice the seams exisiing DUEL-$129 outer fncehf the structure at the pmniS-indmatbd ill will he, cemented.
Having thus descrihmi the invention, what is claimed is: v
