TRAIN-ORDER DELIVERER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DU'roHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Versailles, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Train-Order Deliverers, of which the following. is a specification, reference beingv had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in train order deliverers.
The present invention pertains tothe class of train order deliverers which is intended to deliver the train order to persons on a moving train without the necessity of stopping the train. It is the practice in delivering the train order that two copies of the order be delivered to the train, one to the engineer and the other to a conductor or brakeman at the rear end of the train. In delivering these two copies of the order to fast moving trains, under the present practice, a great deal of quickness and skill is required on the part of the station-operator to have the second order in proper position to be received by the person on the end of the train after having delivered the first copy to the engineer.
The object of my invention is to provide a train order deliverer so constructed that two train orders are held thereby, one above the other, and when the lower order carrying member, which is in proper position to be received by the engineer, is released, the upper-order carrying member automatically drops into position to be received by the conductor or other person at the end of the train.
Another object of my invention is to pro-- vide'a deliverer of this character in which the train order holding rings can be placed in the holder by the station operator before leaving the station and said holder being adapted to be readily applied to a support or standard along the side of the track and rigidly held in the proper position to deliver the two orders.
A still further object of my'invention is to provide a simple, cheap and more effective deliverer of this character having certaindetails of structure and operation hereinafter more fully set forth.

Referring now to the drawing, 1 represents the standard which is arranged along the side of the track, or, in some instances, where thereare three or four tracks between the tracks, and consists of a lower portion 2- embedded in cement or any other form of foundation.
The standard 1 is hinged at?) to the base 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and: 4, in order that the standard may be thrown down upon the ground, as shown in Fig. 4., Any desired locking means may be employed, such as at 4, for locking the standard in a vertical position. In railroads the projections between the tracks are objectionable as the crews of the train are often injured by coming in contact with the same and, therefore, I have made my improved deliverer of the hinge form so that it can be folded down upon the ground when not in use.
The standard 1, midway its ends is providedwith a socket 5 adapted to receive a railway signal fusee 6' for the purpose of signaling to the crew of the train to indicate to them that there is a message to be received. This socket 5 is also adapted to 'receive a flag to signal to the t-raincrew by day, while the fusee is used-at night. The upper end of the standard is reduced, as in dicated at 7, and is made of a hollow form, as shown in Fig. 2. The extreme upperend of the reduced portion 7, isprovided with a vertical slot 8' and below said slot the reduced portion is provided with a sleeve 9 having a socket, the purpose of which will be presently described.
The train order holder proper is composedof a'handle 10 having a casting 11, secured at its upper end and said cast-ing is provided with a large cylindrical portion 12, at one side which is adapted to enter the open hollow end of 7 and the casting adapted to pass downwardly within the vertical slot 8. The lower end of the handle passes through the socket carried by the sleeve 9. By this structure it will be seen that the train order deliverer is rigidly supported by the standard, yet it is easily attached or removed from the standard. The casting 11 on the opposite side of the cylindrical portion 12 is provided with an outwardly extending plate 13, riveted or screwed to the casting. The plate 13, as shown, is of an elongated form and extends horizontally outwardly and adjacent its outer end is provided with laterally extending flanges 1 1. Mounted in said flanges parallel with the plate 13 is a pivot 15, upon which is loosely mounted the clamp ing jaw 16, which is adapted to hold the loop 17 of the train order holder 18. This clamping jaw 16 has its central portion cut out, as indicated at 19, and surrounding the pivot .15 within said cutaway portion is a coiled spring 20. One end 21 of the coiled spring bears against the clamping jaw 16 and the opposite end 22 bears against the vertical side of the plate 13. By this structure it will be seen that the spring jaw 16 is normally held against the fiat face of the plate 13.
The upper edge of the clamping jaw 16 is provided with a laterally semi-circular extension 23, which extends around the pivot 15, the outer free end 24 of which is normally in beyond the inner face of the plate 13. The plate 13 is provided with an extension 25, to which is pivotally connected at 26 the train order delivering member 27. This member 27 is provided with a spring clamping jaw 28, constructed and arranged exactly like the one carried by the plate 13, and needs no further description. The train order delivering member 27 is provided with a laterally turned portion 29, which extends around the extension 25 carried by the plate 13 and parallel therewith, the pivot 26 also passing through the extension 29. By this arrangement it will be seen that the upward movement of the train order delivering member 27 is limited. The extension 29 is of a length to extend down in a horizontal alinement with the upper face of the laterally extending semi-circular plate 23, carried by the clamping jaw 16 of the lower train order delivering member.
As heretofore stated, when the lower train order delivering member is in its normal position without a train order ring therein, the upper train order member swings by gravity upon its pivot 26, and assumes a horizontal position, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
In operation a train order ring is first placed in the upper train order deliverer 27 and the same is swung in the upper position shown in Fig. 5. This brings the lower straight horizontal edge of the extension 29 above the lateral semicircular plate 23. A second train order ring is placed in the lower train-order deliverer and the outward move ment of the spring jaw 16 to receive said ring moves the edge 24 of the semi-circular plate 23 below the straight horizontal edge of the extension 29, so that the upper train order deliverer 27 is locked in its upward position. The device being placed along the side of the track, as shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings, and the train order rings being placed in the holder, as heretofore described, the lower train order ring is in a position to be received by the crew of the train. When the lower ring is removed from the lower train order deliverer, the spring aw by the tension of the spring 20 is forced inwardly against the plate 13, which brings the edge 24 of the semi-circular plate 23 from below the outer end of the extension 29 and allows the upper train order deliverer 27 to drop in a horizontal position and in a position approximately that of the lower ring just removed, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
While I have shown this specific form of means for automatically delivering train order rings to a crew of a train, it will be understood that the specific structure could be varied without departing from my invention.
While I have shown and described the specific means of holding the train order rings of the deliverer, it is understood that I do not desire to claim this in an application, as it is specifically covered in an application filed by applicant Sept. 17, 1913, Serial No. 790,253.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a stationary message ring holding member, a pivoted message ring holding member, and means carried by the stationary member for locking the pivoted member in its upward position.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a stationary message ring holding member, a pivoted message ring holding member, and means carried by the stationary holding member and controlled by the message carrying ring for locking the pivoted member in its upward position.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a horizontal stationary message ring holding member, a pivoted message ring holding member, and means carried by the stationary holding member for locking the pivoted member in a vertical position at approximately right angles to the stationary holding member.
4:. A device of the character described, comprising a stationary message ring hold ing member, a pivoted message ring holding member above the stationary member, means carried by the stationary holding member and controlled by the message ring for locking the pivoted member in its upward position, and releasing the said pivoted member when themessage ring is removed from the stationary holding member.
5. A device of the character described, Comprising a body portion having a stationary message ring holding member arranged in a horizontal position, a pivoted message holding member carried by the body-portion above the stationary holding.

A device of the character described, comprising a body-portion having a horizontally arranged stationary message ring receiving socket, a pivoted clamping member in said socket for clamping the message ring therein, a pivoted message ring receiving socket carried by the body portion, means carried by the clamping member of the stationary socket for locking the pivoted socket in its upward position.
8. A device of the character described, comprising a body-portion, a horizontally arranged stationary message ring receiving socket, a pivoted message ring receiving socket, and means operated by the message ring for locking the pivoted socket in its upward position.
9. A device of the character described, comprising a body-portion having a horizontally arranged stationary message ring receiving socket, a pivoted clamping member within said socket, a pivoted message receiving socket carried by the body-portion above the stationary socket, a rearwardly extending member carried by the clamping member of the stationary socket and adapted to pass below the pivoted socket for lock ing the same in an upward position when the message ring is in the lower socket.
10. A device of the character described, comprising a body portion, means carried by the body-portion for removably attaching it to a standard, a horizontally arranged message ring receiving socket carried by the body-portion, a pivoted message ring receiving socket carried by the body portion above the stationary socket, means carried by the stationary socket for holding the message ring therein and means carried by the clamping means for locking the pivoted socket in its upward position when the message ring is in the stationary socket.
11. In a device of the character described, comprising a body portion, a horizontally arranged stationary message ring supporting member, a pivoted message ring sup-- porting member carried by the body por-' tion, and means carried by the stationary ring supporting member for locking the pivoted ring supporting member in its upward position when the message ring is in the horizontally arranged stationary socket.
12. A device of the character described, comprising a body-portion, a handle carried by the body portion, a horizontally arranged socket carried by the body-portion and adapted to support a message ring, a pivoted socket carried by the body-portion above the horizontal socket, means carried by the horizontal socket for holding the message ring therein, and said means adapted to lock the pivoted socket in its upward position when the message ring is in the lower socket.
13. The combination with a standard, of a train order deliverer removably supported by said standard, train order holders supported by the deliverer and means carried by the train order deliverer for automatically bringing a second train order holder into operative position when the first-train order holder is removed.
14:. The combination with a standard arranged along the side of the track, means for swinging said standard downwardly, said standard having a socket, a train order deliverer removably supported in said socket order holders supported by the deliverer and means carried by the standard for supporting a signal.
15. The combination with a pivoted standard arranged along the side of the track and adapted to be thrown downwardly in a horizontal position, said standard having a socket, order holders supported by the deliverer and a train order deliverer adapted to be removably supported in said socket. 16. The combination with a standard arranged along the side of the track'and having a socket, a train order deliverer removably supported in said socket and means carried by the standard for holding a signal.
17. The combination with a pivoted standard arranged along the side of the track and having a socket in its upper end, and an eye below said socket, of a train order deliverer having an extension adapted to enter said socket, order holders supported by the deliverer and a handle passing through said eye.
18. The combination with a pivoted standard arranged along the side of the track and having a socket at its upper end, an
eye below the socket, of a train order deliverer having an elongated handle and an extension at its upper end, said extension adapted to enter said socket and the handle passing through the eye.
19. The combination with a standard arranged along the side of the track, having a socket at its upper end and an eye below the socket of a train order deliverer having an elongated handle and an extension at one side of the handle adapted to enter the socket and the handle of the train order deliverer passing through the eye.
20. A device of the character described, comprising a body-portion having a. horizontally arranged message ring supporting member, a pivoted message ring supporting member above the horizontally arranged member, and means whereby the pivoted message ring supporting member is held in its upward posit-ion when the message ring is in the horizontal member.
21. In a device of the character described, comprising two message ring holding members, message rings removably carried by said members and means carried by one of the message ring holding members and con trolled by the message ring for locking the other message ring holding member out of an operative position.
22. A device of the character described, comprising two message ring holding menihers, and means carried by one of said mem bers for holding the other member out of operative position, and said means con trolled by the message ring.
23. A device of the character described, comprising a stationary message ring holding member, a movable message ring holding member and means carried by the stationary member for locking the movable member in an operative position and said means controlled by the message carrying ring.
