TRAIN-ORDER DELIVERER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DUTOHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Versailles, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Train- Order Deliverers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in train order deliverers. Y i
The present invention pertains to that class of train order deliverers which is intended to deliver the train order to persons on a moving train without the necessity of stopping the train. It is the practice in delivering train orders that two copies of the order be delivered to the train, one to the engineer and the other to a person at the end of the train. When delivering these two copies to fast moving passenger trains, under the present practice, a' great deal of quickness and skill is required'on the part of the station operator to have the second order in proper position'to' be received by the person at the end of the train after having delivered one copy to the engineer.
The object of my invention is to provide a train order deliverer so constructed that two orders are held thereby and requiring only the turning of the handle of the deliverer to bring the second order into the proper position after the first 'order has been delivered. Y
Another object of my invention is to provide a deliverer of this character in which the train order carrying rings are so supported that they willbe more 'readily re-' .leased so as not to pull the deliverer from the hands of the person delivering the order.
A till further object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and more effective construction and operation of parts having certain details of structure hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view of my improved train order deliverer. Fig. 2 is an enlarged'side elevation of the ring supporting member. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1'.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the handle of the'delivere'r which has secured at its upper end a semi-circular plate 2 encircling-one-half of the handle, and said plate having an upwardly inclined portion 3. Encircling the other half of the handle, opposite the plate 2, is a semi-circular plate 4;, which is likewise provided with is provided with ears 6, which pass through the plate 4 and riveted on the outside thereof. The plate 4 is also supplied with ears 7 'which pass through the plate 3 and riveted at 7 on the outside of the plate. From this structure it will be seen that a circular head is provided. This head is secured to the handle by means of a pin or screw 8 passing through both plates 2 and 4:. r
The plate 3, as heretofore stated, extends upwardly at an angle and is provided with outwardly turned portions at the sides and numbered 9 and 10. Passing transversely through the said t-urned portions 9'and 10 is a bolt 11, upon which is pivotally mounted a plate 12. This plate 12 has a central cut-- away portion 13 and within said cut-away portion surrounding the bolt 11 is a coiled spring 14. This coiled spring 14 has one end 15 bearing against the plate 3 and its opposite end 16 hearing against the outer face of the pivoted'plate 12. This spring, as fully shown, normally holds. the pivoted plate in an inward position against the flat side of the plate" 3. The plate 3 is provided with an inwardly pressed i circular portion 17, which serves as a means for more securely holding the trainorder carrying ring 18.
The train order carrying ring 18 is of a circular form and having the loop portion 19 which is of a width equal to that between the outwardly turned'portions 9 and 10 of the. plate 3 and is adapted to pass between the same and in between the inner face of theplate 3, and the inner face of the springpressed pivoted plate 12. The inwardly depressed portion 17, as heretofore described, forms a slight projection on the inner face of the plate 3' and serves to more securely hold the train order carrying ring 18. The plate 5 is provided with centrally turned portions 19 which extend in opposite directions to that of the portions 9 and 10, and pivoted between the same is a plate 20 arranged exactly like the plate 12. From this description it will be seen that the plates 20 and 12 are adapted to move in opposite directions, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The train order carrying ring 18 has one end looped at 21, for the purpose of holding an upwardlyinclined plate 5. The plate 2' the train order 22, the specific construction of which is covered in a separate application.
In operation, the train order carrying rings 18 are placed in the members 3 and 5, and held therein by means of the pivoted spring-pressed plates 12 and 20. The arrangement is such that as the ring is being drawn or pulled from the deliverer by the movement of the train, it is forcing the plate 12 away from the plate 3 and, therefore, allows the ring to be more readily with drawn therefrom. After the first ring is removed, allthat is necessary to do is to turn the handle one-half of the revolution which turns the plate 5 in exactly the same position as the plate 3, shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so that as the person on the end of the train is withdrawing the second ring from the deliverer, the ring is forced against the plate 20 and is easily removed. Vhile I have shown and described this specific means for holding the ring, it is understood that this could be varied witlr out departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. A device of the character described, comprising a handle having at its end two flat members extending on opposite sides of the center thereof, and means carried by opposite sides of the fiat members for holding a. train order carrying member, whereby the order carrying member is removed from the deliverer in a horizontal direction approximately at right angles to the flat members and the handle.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a handle having at its end two flat members extending on opposite sides of the center thereof, and spring pressed members carried by the opposite sides of the fiat members for holding av train order carrying member, whereby the order carrying member is removed from the deliverer in a hori zontal direction approximately at right angles to the flat members and the handle.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a handle having at its outer end two sockets having spring-pressed members arranged on opposite sides and adapted to support the train order carrying rings, whereby the spring pressed members are forced upwardly during the removal of each from the sockets.
4:. A device of the character described, comprising a handle, two outwardly extending sockets carried by opposite sides of the handle, a spring pressed member carried by one socket, a spring pressed member carried by the other socket on the opposite side from the spring pressed member of the first socket, train order carrying rings within the socket and held therein by the springpressed members, whereby the removal of the rings is against the spring pressed members, substantially as shown and described.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a handle having outwardly and upwardly extending sockets carried by the upper end of the handle on opposite sides, of a spring-pressed jaw carried by one socket, a spring-pressed jaw carried by the opposite socket on the opposite side, substantially as shown and described.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a handle, two members constructed precisely alike and secured to opposite sides of the handle and extending in opposite directions, spring-pressed jaws car ried by the said members on opposite sides and between which the train order carrying ring is held, substantially as shown and described.-
7. A device of the character described, comprising a handle, outwardly and upwardly extending sockets carried by the opposite sides of the handle, spring-pressed members carried by the opposite sides of the sockets and between which the train order carrying ring passes, said sockets having inwardly depressed portions, for the purpose described.
8. A device of the character described, comprising two plates constructed exactly alike and having at their inner ends circular portions, riveted together to form a central sleeve adapted to receive a handle, spring-pressed plates carried by the ends of the sockets on opposite sides and adapted to support and hold the train order carrying rings within the sockets.
9. A device of the character described, comprising two plates constructed exactly alike and having at their inner ends semicircular portions forming a central circular sleeve adapted to receive a handle, said plates having outwardly extending ears which extend in opposite directions when arranged on the handle, spring-pressed plates between said ears and adapted to hold and support the train order carrying rings between the ears, and said plates having inwardly depressed circular portions, substantially as shown and described.
10. A device of the character described, comprising a handle at its end two members extending from opposite sides of the center thereof, and outwardly movable means carried by opposite sides of the said members for holding a train order carrying member, whereby the order carrying member is removed from the deliverer in a horizontal direction approximately at right angles to members and to the handle.
11. A device of the character described, comprising a handle having at its end two sockets extending on opposite sides of the center thereof, and having open sides oppositely arranged and spring pressed members within the open sides of sockets for holding the message holders, whereby the message holders are removed from the deliverer in a horizontal direction approximately at right angles to the sockets and the handle.
12. A device of the character described comprising a handle, having at its end two independent train-order carrying members extending on opposite sides of the center of the handle, and spring-pressed members arranged on opposite sides of the trainorder carrying members and adapted to support the message holders whereby the spring-pressed members are forced outwardly during the removal of each from the train-order carrying members.
13. A device of the character described, comprising a handle having at its end two independent train-order carrying members extending on opposite sides of the center of the handle, movable members arranged on opposite sides of the train order carrying member, and adapted to support the message-holders whereby the said members are forced outwardly during the removal of each from the train-order carrying members.
