CABIBURETER.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1914.
Application filed August 23, 19i2. Serial No. 716,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PASQUALE J. SAssANo, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of'New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carbureters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has relation to carbureters for internal combustion engines, the principal object in view being to avoid the use of the auxiliary air intake generally provided in the construction of the ordinary carbureter.
A further purpose of the invention is to simplify the construction and minimize the number of parts and to provide an arrangement whereby the carbureter is automatic in adapting itself to the speed of the engine, whether the same is running slow or fast.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a vertical central longitudinal section of a carbureter 2 .,a;op plan View. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the piston control. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the piston.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters. I
The carbureter comprises separate and distinct parts such as a fuel mixer, a. float control and a fuel regulator. The fuel mixer embodies'a Venturi tube 2 which is surrounded by means of a. jacket C through which a heating medium is caused to circulate to facilita e the commingling of, the fuel and air and toinsure the thorough vaporization of the fuel. The Venturi tube is provided at its upper end with an attaching flange 8 and within the upper portion of such tube is arranged the throttle l and an annular stop it, the latter consisting of a split ring sprung into a groove formed in the inner wall of the tube, said ring forming Venturi tube. A priming cup is connected 7 with the bar a by means ofa stem 6 in which is mounted a needle valve H by means of which the flow of the fuel through the-opening or passage 5 is regulated. A space '1' is formed between the lower end of the Venturi tube 2 and the priming cup 7'. The piston B is arranged to mov freely within the Venturi tube above the flared portion and is provided near its outer edgewith a plurality of openings G which incline to the vertical in such a manner as to impart to the jets of air escaping therefrom a spiral or gyrating motion to insure a thorough commlnghng of the air and fuel. The pls- 'ton B has a central opening in which is fitted a hollow stem A which telescopes with the spray nozzle F. A damper K cooperates with the piston B to vary the effective size of the openings G to meet varying conditions, such as speed of the engine and the character the fuel and nature of the air to be mixed therewith. formed in the sides of the hollow stem A at Openings K are a point intermediate above the spray nozzle F when the parts are in normal position and the engine is running at slow speed. A deflector t is mounted upon the hollow stem A immediately above the openings K in the sides thereof, said deflector being of in verted cup shape and of a diameter to close the openings through the contracted por tion of the Venturi tube, thereby causing the air to pass through-the openings K and upward through the hollow stem A.
The float control consists of a chamber E which has its lowerportion connected with one end of the bar 4. A cover a close the upper end of the chamber E. A guide pin m, is pendent from the cover a and directs the float D in its vertical movement. The
of a valve 8. The float lever g pivo 9 has one end connected with the i. and its opposite end arranged to engfloat D. A plunger Z2 is arranged .o o..- erate Within the chambered extension '2' and is normally pressed downward by means of an expansihle helical spring 10 so as to hold the valve 8 closed. The plunger F) has stem 5 "which passes throu 'gh the helical. spring 10 and a plug 0 threaded into the upper portion. of the chambered extension 7 and engaging the upper end of the spring 10. The plug 0 is adjustable to admit of varying the tension of the spring 10 and is secured in the adjusted position by means of a jam nut (Z. A chamber P. is formed below the valved bottom of the chambered extension 7 and has a coupling 7 and a. drain coclr ll fitted thereto. The gt'eed pipe from the fuel tank is adapted to be coupled to the inlet f in the usual Way.
The operation of the carlmreter is as fol-- lows: The parts when assembled appear substantially as shown in the accompanying' drawing. When the fuel in the chamber E is at the predetermined level the float D is lifted, thereby permitting the spring;- ll through the plunger 6 to hold the valve 8 seated. At the same time the fuel Within. the spray nozzle extends to Within a. short distance approximating one-eighth of an inch of the upper or delivery end. When the engine is running at slow speed air is drawn upward into the space it of the Venturi tube 2 surrounding the spray nozzle F and passes through the openings K of the hollow stein A, thence to the engine. The suction created by the air causes a small portion of the fuel to be drawn from the spray nozzle F and such fuel mixing with the air produces the combustible mixture for use in the engine. As the speed of the engine increases the piston 13 is caused to move upward, thereby increasing the passage through the Venturi tube by moving the deflector z away from the contracted portion of said tube. This alsoincreases the suction through the tube Wit the result that a greater amount ofliuel is caused to discharge from the spray nozzle Ff The air passing through the opening's of the piston divided into a number of jets and the latter receive a whirling moon. by reason of the inclination oi? the open- G, With the result that the mixture is openimg. said piston be agitated and a thorough commie the constituents assuree. il hen i quired to prime the carburetor the is drawn upward thereby li" from its seat so that the and aportion ass into th to insure a'rich mixture v an the foregoing description, tal' 'm in connection with the aiccompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation. will. be readily apparent. to those slr'llod in the art. which the While I dee is of operation t e inwith the device which I now consider to be the best cinbodim t thereof, I desire cave i1 understood that, the device shown is .e illustrative and that such changesrnay he made when desired. as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention What is loimed as new, is
1.. in a carburetor of the cl'ir-zict-er de- "Jed. the combination of a spray nozzle,
having a hollow stem 1e soiav nozzle and hav I ing: pro I of openings inclinec and d tlector mounted upon lov; stem of the piston shove the lateral opening.
2-. In a earhw'eter the char eter described the con Quiet-ion of a V niuri tube, a spray nozzle as. ahgtid to deliver the fuel centrally of the contracted portion, piston movable in t i enturi tnbe. above upael may priming cop j charting; the
110 per flared. portion and provided with a. phe rality of openings. and a hollow stem connected with the piston and telescoping with the spray nozzle and provided in a side with an opening at a point above and adjacent the extremity of the spray nozzle.
3. In a carburetor of the character de scribed the combination of Venturi tube, a spray nozzle arranged to deliver the fuel ciatrally of the contracted portion, a piston movable in the i enturi tube shove the up per flared portion and provided with a plu= rality oi? openings. a hollow stem, connected with the piston and. telescoping With the :oray nozzle and provided in 2': side with an opening at a point above and, adjacent. the
ex reinity oil the spray nozzle, and a. dcllmounted upon the hollow stem and oie piston movable in the upper portion of the Venturi tube and provided with a plural ty of openings inclined to the vertical, a hollow stein connected with the piston and telescoping with the spray nozzle and. hev
ing an opening in its side about in the plane of the contracted portion 7 of the Venturi tube, and a deflector mounted upon the hol- 10w stem above the opening in the side there- In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of twr witnesses.
