To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK QMCCAEFREY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Burlington, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric VVhistle-Blowing Appaf ratuses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. This invention has for its object to prof vide iinproved I neans .for effecting the continuous operation cfa whistle. or other form of signal device, for a predetermined period, and to then throw it out of operati-en A further object of the invention is to cause one circuit to put another vcircuit in action, to advance a solenoid core, and operate a signal connected therewith; and to utilize a retarding device, such as a dash pot to control the movementof said solenoid core.

The apparatus is shown as principally arranged in a casing 1, on -a shelf 2 in which is suitably supported a coil 3 with which parts in different 'wires 71 and .fr are connected, comprised in a normally clcsed circuit ofthe fire alarm system. When this circuit is opened or interrupted by the turning 'in of an alarm, a lever 4 carrying an armatilre 72 for the coil, is released. The lever 4 swings 'on a pivot'.-} and is connected with a spring 6 that draws the lever 4 awa-y from coil 3 when the circuit ot' thelatter is broken. A second lever 8 connected with a spring 9, is swung on its pivot. 90 toward lever 4 to engage a contact piece 10 on lever 8 with a contact piece 11 on lever 4; when lever 4 is released on opening of the circuit in coil 3 and swung by' its spring 6 against a stop 91. One-terminal wire 7 of an auxiliary circuit is attached tov the lever 4, and whenthis lever is releasedl connecting pieces 10 and-11, the circuit is formed to lever 8. A wire 12 leads `from lever 8 to a solenoid 13, from which a'return wire 73 leads to the source of current for wire 7. The solenoid 13-is provided` with a core 14 slidable therein, normally held out of the coil, and drawn into it when thesoienoid 13 is energized. A t the upper end of core 14 is shown a hook 15 connected with a plate' 23 and a .springl 22 around the hook holding the plate 23 away from the 'end of the core frame 92 to provide a 'yielding connection between the core and Ithe hook.
As shownin 3, a cable 16 connects hook 15 with one end of a' lever 17 pivoted at 18, and having its other end connected by the apparatus.y y'This spring and lever serve to hold the core in the position shown and `to retract it when in the coil 13. A link 34 connects lever 33 with a lever 35 to pull the latter downward `upon depression of lever 21 as described. A
block 36 is suit-ably supported-'to slide `and is connected with' lever 35. This block has an inclined face 37 which contacts with a 'similar inclined face 38 on the said lever 8, whereby when the block 36 is drawn downward by said levers this lever 8 will be swung against the pull of its spring 9, causy ing a separation of the Contact pieces 10 and 11, thereby effecting a rapid break of the circuit for the coil 13, through the4 Wires 7 and 12,.
