SEPARATING APPARATUS;
Specication of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 26, 1912. Serial No. 717,180.
United States, residing at Scranton, in thev county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Separating Apparatus; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to separating machines and has for its chief object to provide improved means for controlling the operation of the pans in order to elfect the best possible separation of the material by reason of the difference of frictional resistance of said material in relation to the s urface of the pans, and the improved means for changing the inclination of the pans.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application Figure 1 is a view of the device in Side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the relative position of certain of the pans. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the means for Supporting the pans.
A framework 10 constitutes the main Support of the mechanism for directly effecting the separation, and connected with the uprights 12 and 14 of said framework are inclined members 15 and 16, on which the Shafts operating the pans are mounted. On the upper portion of the framework a driving wheel 17 is mounted on a shaft 18, and has connection by means of a crank 19 with a pitman 20, wheel or pulley 17 being driven by a belt 21. Extending transversely of members 15 and 16 is a shaft 25 supported in bearing members 26 and carrying pan 27 which may be termed the upper tilting pan. A lower tilting pan 28 is mounted on a transverse axle 29 carrying arm 30 which extends rearwardly and is located if desired outside of the adjacent inclined frame member.
Connected with the upper tilting pan is a walking beam 31 having connection with pitman 20 and with axle 25. A spring 35 provided with a coil has its opposite ends connected respectively with one end of the walking beam 31 and with an arm 30, which latter, as already stated, is connected with the axle of pan 28. Axle 29 is mounted in bearings and 41, carried by hinged members 42 and 43 which are in turn connected with inclined members 15 and 16. In order to change the inclination of the pan last mentioned, these hinged members are operated by means of a' shaft' 44 having curved arms 45 and 46 connected therewith and arranged to bear respectively against the under sides of members 42 and 43, for the purpose of raising the latter. Shaft 44 is operated by the lever 47 which may en-y gage the segmental member 48, holding it in any desired position, and consequently retaining pan 28 at the inclination desired at any particular time. Upper tilting pan 27 is fed from a chute 50 pivoted at 51 and controlled by an adjusting device 52 described in the patent before mentioned. Device 52 comprises a screw and a crank or the like connected therewith for operating the screw. A pivoted plate 55 also de scribed in said patent is employed for the purpose therein stated. Plate 55 serves to temporarily stop the stream of material until the arms 55a connected therewith engage rod 55h. Pan 27 isprovided with a false bottom, preferably of slate, and designated 56, and an apron 57 extends from false bottom 56 rearwardly and projects over the edge of pan 27 in curved form. The incli nation of the false bottom may be varied by means of'a lever 59. Lever 59 operates f Shaft 70 and arm 71 for raising the bottom 56. Ratchet 72 retains the shaft in position. A depending arm 60 connected with the axle 29 of pan 28 has Contact at times with `an adjustable stop 61, suitably mounted, and which controls the degree of movement of arm 60 and therefore of the pan. The material being discharged from pan 28 enters lower chute 65 or chute 66 according to the position in which pan 28 may be at a given time.
The connection between spring 85 and the forward end of the walking beam is by means of a loose pin 35, the other end of the spring being firmly secured to arm 30. The spring holds the lower tilting pan rigidly while the load is being discharged thereupon from the upper pan. Vibration of the lower pan is thus prevented, and the frictional resistance of the surface of that pan is therefore the same at all times, until its position is changed.
The frictional resistance between the slate slab and the rock and slate passing over it is changed, or increased, by increasing the inclination by the means shown. The lower tilting pan may be raised bodily in order to bring its edge nearer the edge of the slate slab by the operation of the elevating device specied. If the material being treated necessitates the changing of the inclination or degree of movement of the lower tilting pan, this may be accomplished by changing the position of the stop which coperates with the arm below said pan. ther features of the operation of the device are set forth in our former patent, above mentioned. It may be added, however, that a limited movement of the walking beam does not affect thelower pan. The latter may be adjusted without adjusting the spring, but when desired, the length of the spring may be changed by means of the set screws 30a.
It will be seen that as in the construction described in the aforesaid patent, we have provided a pan such as 28, across which material acted upon is discharged while this pan is maintained in a horizontal position with a space intervening between the pan and a chute, such as 6G, through which space slate will fall, while the coal will pass over the intervening space to the chute 6G. ln addition to this construction, we have, however, provided novel means for operating and controlling the pans.
Pan 27 receives its load when in a horizontal position. It is tilted from that position by arm 31 to the position shown in Fig. l and the material is caused to travel across pan 28 which is then horizontal, the material discharging into pan 66. Pan 27 is then caused to assume its horizontal position and pan 28 is tilted downwardly at its forward edge for the purpose of discharging any refuse material remaining thereon, Adjustable bottom 56' provides increased or decreased frictional resistance according to its angle of inclination. Pan 28 is controlled by lever Il? so far as its relation to the edge of pan 27, and especially the falso bottom of the said pan is concerned. The position of stop 61 with reference to arm 60 (Fig. 3) determines the loading position and also the degree of movement of the pan imparted by means of arm 30 and spring 35, the latter having connection with arm 3l.

3. ln a device of the class described, a frame work, an upper tilting pan mounted therein, a lower tilting pan, a hinged device for varying the inclination of the lower pan, a bar mounted transversely of the lower pan, an arm connected with the bar and arranged to engage the hinged member, means for transmitting motion from one pan to the other without vibration, and including a resilient device.
4. In a device of the class described, a framework, a plurality of tilting pans mounted therein, an adjustable bottom for one of the pans, a lever for operating said pan, and means including a resilient device connected with the lever and with the other pan.
