LIFTI'NG FOR "STAMP-MIKE'S AND THE Specification 'of Letter 5' Patent.

Application meaara 7, 191 s. -Seria-15No. 766,243.
Be it known that I, Tnnonon F REY, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Hoc'hdorf, in the Canton of Luzerne, Republic of Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Mechanism for Stamp-.Mills or the like; and I do hereby declare the following to bee full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has for its object to provide an improved lifting mechanism for stamp mills or the like. This apparatus is provided with a clamping frame con stantly moving up and down and with a brake automatically preventing the free falling of the bars.
One embodiment of this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanymg drawing.
Figure l is a side view of the apparatus, Fig. 2 shows the clamping frame partly in a side view taken from the left in Fig. .1, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the brake. Fig. 4 is a detail showing the manner of mounting certain of the elements described below.
The bar 0 to be lifted and let fall is mounted in two guides at and b so that it may be moved upward and downward with its axis in vertical position. Each of these guides is provided with a laterally extending arm to which one end of a vertical rod (Z is firmly attached. To this rod (Z a stop 6 is fastened projecting toward the bar 0 and below this stop the rod d is provided with a bearing-arm 7' extending on the opposite side of the rod. An angular lever 9, one end of which projects away from the rod (Z, is pivotally mounted on the bearing-arm f. Above its knee the angular lever g is provided with a stop pin it extending through the bearing-arm f and the rod (Z and constantly held in the path of a nose k by means of a spring 71. In Fig. 1 the dotted line position of nut K shows the latter engaging pin it. One end of the spring enters the pin and the other end is secured to bar (Z. The nose k is provided on a screwnut k connecting the two parts of a twoparted screw-spindle j, 7' One of these parts a right-handed, and the other a lefthanded thread so that when the nut 10 is turned in one or the other direction the part 7' is moved to and fro in axial direction. The party is provided on its free end a clamping plate at projecting through a slot on the wall of a tga'iiding piece m which surrounds the bar 0 and forms part of a clamping frame n. This frame is suspended, by means of rods 11 to :a rotary craafk (not shownj so that it is constantly moved up and down. The part 7' of 17119; spindle 7' is pro'viaded on its free end. which projects out of the nut 70, with a wedge shaped fhead 7' A wedge :0 is provided between this head "and, the frame a and adapted to be moved in a vertical dovetail groove in said head by means of a screw 0 mounted in the frame a. By moving the wedge 0' the action 'of the clamping plate at can be regulafed. Below the clumping frame m, the bar 0 is embraced by two brake-blocks 79 which normally rest on the hearing I). On 'two points placed one above the other each" of said blocks 17 is connected, by means oilf a how with two levers 1" one on i1ih :side of the bar 0, in such a manner, that when the lever m oscillates up and down the brakebloeks 7; strongly embrace and release the bar -0 alternately. The releasing takes place however only in such a manner that the brake-blocks are always in contact with the bar so that they are able to embrace them strongly and immediately when the bar sinks so that they may prevent automatically the bar from falling.
The levers r are connected on their other ends to the free ends of a strap 8 oscillating upward and downward about a stationary axle t. A vertical rod a is pivoted at its upper end to the middle-part of the strap 8 and with its lower end to a hand-lever o. This hand or regulating-lever effects by its own weight a constant raising of the levers r and applying of the brake-blocks to the bar 0.
The operation of the described apparatus is as follows: As it was already said the frame a is continually moved up and down. In order toraise the bar 0 for a desired extent, the pin it is placed in the path of the nose so that in the lowest position of the frame 17. the screw-nut 7c is turned to the right (Fig. 1) and consequently the bar 0 is clamped in the guide m At the next upward-movement of the frame a, the bar 0, on
which a rammer or the like may be provided, is lifted. When the nose strikes the projection e, the screw-nut 7c is turned back and the clamping-plate m, moved away from the bar 0. This at once tends to fall but is prevented therefrom by the brakeblocks p as these are at once forced against the bar 0. The latter rests therefore in its raised position during the neXt downward movement of the brake-frame n and is raised for the same extent at the next upward movement of the latter as set forth.
If it is desired to let fall the bar 0 after each upward stroke, the brake-blocks 79 are put out of action by raising the lever 'v. If the bar 0 shall be moved up and down with the frame n but not be raised and let fall alternately, the angle-lever g is raised by means of a rod w hinged thereto and secured in this raised position by means of a thumbscrew a. By this means the bolt 72, is kept out of the path of the nose 70 of the screw-nut 7c and therefore the bar 0 is not released from the clamping plate at but after the screw-nut is turned back again. By regulating the position of the lever o the speed of the bar 0 in falling may be increased or decreased.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a bar to be reciprocated, a reciprocating frame for operating said bar, rotary clamping mechanism within the frame including members having reverse threads and means for operating said member by the reciprocation of the frame.
2. In a device of the class described, a bar to be reciprocated, a reciprocating frame, a threaded member within the frame for en gaging the bar, a second threaded member the threads of the latter being arranged in the opposite direction to those of the former, a nut engaging said members, and means for rotating the nut.
3. In a device of the class described, a re ciprocating frame, a bar to be reciprocated by the frame, a clamping member in the frame, a threaded member connecting with the clamping member, a second member having a thread extending in the opposite direc tion, means for adjusting the second member, and a nut having threads reversely arranged engaging the threaded members and means for operating the nut to move the clamping member into engagement with the bar.
4. In a device of the class described, a reciprocating frame, a bar to be reciprocated thereby, means carried by the frame and within the same for positively engaging the bar, means for causing said means within the frame to be operated and a device for throwing the means last mentioned out of action.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
