OBSTETRIGAL FORCEPS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM L. TowN- SEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at lola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Obstetrical Forceps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in obstetrical forceps.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construct-ion of obstetrical forceps, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient instrument designed for facilitating the deliver)T of various animals, especially pigs, and adapted to firmly grip a young pig o-r other animal around the neck, and capable of extracting such animal without liabilityrof crushing it-s skull.
A. further object of the invention is to provide an instrument of this character having smooth gripping jaws to avoid injuring either a pig or a sow, and provided also with handles adapted to indicate the position of the jaws, so that after the same have been introduced into an animal, they may be opened and closed with accuracy.
lith these and other objects in vie-w, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope o-f the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing z--Figure 1 is a perspective view of obstetrical forceps, constructed according to this invention, and shown closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, the jaws of the forceps being open. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, the jaws being shown closed in full lines and open in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the bearing bushings.

In the accompanying drawing in which is illust-rated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the obstetrical forceps, which are designed to be constructed of steel or other Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable material and finished in any desired manner to enable the instrument to be sterilized, comprise in their construction a tubul ar rod or stem l provided at its inner or rear end with a suitable handle 2, and equipped at its terminals with inner and outer bearing bushings 3, constructed of suitable metal and having parallel bores or openings 4, arranged in alinement and receiving a pair of parallel rock .shafts 5. The bushings 3, which may be secured within the ends of the tubular stem in any suitable manner, form solid terminal bearings, and their openings are longitudinally alined and support the inner and outer portions of the shafts 5 and maint-ain the latter in spaced parallel relation, as clearly illustrate-d in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The handle 2, which may be secured to the rod or stem 1 in any desired manner, may be constructed of metal or any other suitable material, and it may be of any preferred form and it enables the instrument to be firmly held while operating the same.
The shafts 5, which consist of rods, are provided at their o-uter ends with approximately semicircular jaws 6, arranged to swing transversely of the instrument to open and close the forceps and having their terminal portions operating in contiguous planes, so that the outer ends of the jaws will slide on each other in the closing movement of the instrument. The curved jaws, which swing transversely of the instrument, are adapted when closed to form a substantially circular loop to encircle and fit the neck of an animal. The jaws, which present smooth inner and outer faces, are adapted to be introduced into an animal without injuring the same and after such insertion, they may be opened and placed around the neck o-f the offspring. In order to afford greater protectionV to both the young and old animal, the jaws 6 are covered with yieldable material preferably consisting of small rubber tubes 6a, arranged on the arms and adapted to be readily removed therefrom for sterilizing the instrument. To enable the position of the jaws under such conditions to be ascertained with accuracy, the shafts are provided at their inner or rear ends with approximately straight operating arms 7 receiving a loop or link 8 of substantially oblong form having a longitudinal opening Si through which the arms 7 jgass. The operating arms are located beyond the end of the handle, and the operator is adapted to grasp the handle with one hand and the operating` arms with the other hand and manipulate the same without interfering with his grip on the handle of the instrument. The arms, which extend in the same general direction as the jaws, are provided at their outer sides with not-ches l0, adapted to be engaged by the link or loop S, which retains the ja 's iu engagement with a pig or other animal.
