Be it known that I, WARREN D. SMITH, a
citizen of the United. States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn,'county of Kings, and State of New ork, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in. Machines for 'Making Packing, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.v
This invention relates to a class of machines adapted to be employed for making packing to be used especially upon the piston rods, or other parts of various kinds of machinery, or the like.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a form of machine designed to be employed for producing rod packing made of asbestos cloth, or other fabric, or flexible material for use in various parts of machinery, and which is constructed so as to be adapted to form the core of the packing as well as applyingthereon -a suitable wrapper, thus dispensing with the requirement of making this type of packing by skilled hand-workmanship as is incident to the methods at present in use.
Other objects of the invention are to provide means which serves to form the core of the packing from strips of flexible material; to provide an adjustable shaper' whereby cores of various dimensions \may be formed; to provide means adapted to apply one or more yielding strips of material, such as rubber to the core; to provide a plurality of freely rotatable rollers, or devices adapt-- edfor applying-a flexible-wrapper upon the core and yielding strip when formed; and to provide a plurality. of carriers which serve to deliver the core to the devices for 40 the wrapper to'be properly applied thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a inachinefor making packing of simple and efficient construction, and which is susceptible of being made in various sizes.
lVith these and other objects in View, the
invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

.22 rotatably held to the bracket whereby the Power is imparted to the feed rollers 15 and 16 from the drive shaft 14 through the medium of a belt 23 which is guided over a pulley 24 held upon the drive shaft, and also over pulleys 25, 26, 27, 28 which are suitably supported above the mechanism 12. From the pulleys 27 and 28 the belt 23 is guided over a pulley 29 which is held upon the shaft 17 of the roller 15, so that the speed of the drive shaft will be transmitted to the rollers 15 and 16. At alternate spaced intervals upon each of the rollers 15 and 16 are projecting annular flanges, or gripping members 30 and 36" which serve to engage as well as slightly crease the strip of asbestos cloth, or other fabric, or flexible material, as 31, of which the core of the packing is formed, and which is supplied to the machine from a roll, as 32, revolubly mounted upon a bracket 33 supported upon the base plate 11. From the rollers 15 and 16 the material is fed to a shaper 34 which serves to further crease the material longitudinally into plaits whereby it may be readily formed into the core ofa square block-like strip, as illustrated. The shaper 34 has a frame 35 composed of vertically disposed spaced standards 36, 37, 38, 39 supported upon a plate which may be provided upon the base plate 11. Through threaded openings provided in the standards 36, 37, 38, 39 are a number of transversely disposed spaced rods 40 which are also threaded so that said rods may be relatively adjusted. Upon each of the rods 40 of the standards 36 and 38 are held the ends of longitudinally disposed spaced bars 41, and upon each of the rods 40 of the standards 37 and 39 are held the ends of a corresponding number of spaced bars 42. Each of the bars 40 and 41has an equal number of openings transversely therethrough, and in each of these openings is a freely rotatable wheel 43. As indicated, the standards 36 and 37 are spaced apart for a greater distance than the standards 38 and 39, and the bars are mounted upon all of the 1 standards in a manner so that these bars and rial is passed between the sets of' wheels 43,

The core-former 44v is composed of a bracket 45 which is fastened in a vertical position upon the base plate 11, and in said bracket are journaled two spaced vertically disposed shafts 46 and 47. Mounted upon each of the shafts 6- and 47 are sets of wheels 48 and 49, and the wheels of each of the shafts are spaced apart so that the Wheels of one set are disposed between the wheels of the other set, as shown in Fig. 6. The material of the core as it is creased by the shaper 34 and delivered to the former 44 is guided between the sets of wheels 46 and 47, and is formed thereby into practically a finished shape. Upon the upper part of the shaft 49 is held a bevel gear 50, and
meshing With this bevel gear is a bevel gear '51 provided upon the drive shaft 14, in order for rotation to be imparted to the shaft 49 for carrying the core to be delivered be tween two spaced pressing rollers, as 52 and 53, which are rotatably mounted upon a bracket 54 supported upon the base plate 11. As it is customary to apply upon the material of which this form of packing is made, a coating of adhesive substance, such as rubber cement, the folds of the core when formed by the shaper 34 and the former 44 are adhered together when passed through the pressing rollers 52 and 53. The core thus formed is delivered between two other spaced rollers 55 and 56 which are rotatably held upon a bracket 57 supported upon the base plate 11 in proximity to-the bracket 54 of the pressing rollers 52 and 53. The roller 56 is peripherally grooved, as shown at 58, and serves as a means to feed as well as apply upon one surface of the core a strip ofyielding material, as 59, which is preferably made of rubber, and this strip is delivered from a roll 60 which is suitably supported above the machine. Upon the base plate 11, and adjacent to. the rollers 55 and 56, is avertically disposed bracket 61 which revolubly carries a roll of flexible material,
62 such as cement coated asbestos cloth, or the like, which is employed as a wrapper upon the square, or rectangular core of the packing. After the core and yielding strip 7 5 9 are adhered together, as above described, the finished core is fed between two spaced rollers 63 and 64 of the wrapping mechanism 13 and both o-fthese rollers are rotatably held upon a bracket 65 which is supported upon the base plate 11. The roller 63 is peripherally grooved at 66, as shown in Fig. 7,;so. as to receive the core of the packing and the wrapperfrom its roll. The wrapper and the core are fed to the rollers 63 and 64 in a manner whereby the wrapper will be applied preferably upon three sides of the core, and theipartially wrapped packing is then deliveredto the device, 1'. mechanism 13 proper for applyipg t reon one, ormore layers of the'wrapper. The wrapping mechanism 13 hasa' frame 67 composed referably of four longitudinally disposed ars 68, 68 68 68 which are spaced apart ir. substantially a square, or rectangular arrangement, and said frame may be supported in any suitable manner upon the base plate 11. i
Disposed at quarter turns upon the square frame 67, and arranged so as to be alternately disposed-upon said. frame are a plurality of wrapping devices, or groups of adjustable rollers 69 and a plurality of carriers 70. While in the drawings areshown five of the adjustable wrappers 69 and four of the carriers 70 it will be understood that a greater, orless number of' these devices maybe employed in conjunction with the machine. All of the wrapping devices, or
roups of adjustable rollers 69 are alike in. formation, and each group of said rollers are arranged upon a supporting plate 71, one of which is fastened upon one side of the frame 67 adjacent to the rollers 63 and 64, and the other four of the supportingplates are connected at spaced intervals to the frame upon each quarter-turn'th'ereof, as illustrated. Through opposite parts of each of the supporting plates 71 are two, or more openings 72 and 7 3, and midway through the plate is a'threaded opening 74. Upon the top-of each of the supporting plates 71 is an adjustable bracket 75 having two or more rods 76 and 77 projecting from its underside, and each of said rods is movably directed through one of the openings 72 and. 73 of each of the plates so that the bracket may be accurately guided relatively to and from its supporting plate. Imorder, to conveniently adjust each ofthe brackets 7 5, screwed-in the threaded opening 74 of each of the supporting plates 71 is a'thread -ed bar 78 having upon one of its ends a hand-wheel 79, and the opposite. end of saidbar is revolubly connected to the underside of the bracket 75. Extending at a right angle from the top of two of the opposite edges of each of the adjustable brackets 7 5 are two rigid flangesSO and. 81, and between said flanges in proximity to-the ends thereof are two transverse stationary rods 82 and 83. Upon the rods 82 and 83 are two movable bars 84 and85. The movable bars 84 and 85 are adapted to be adjusted transversely to various distances apart with respectyto each other, by the means of a threaded rod 86 which is screwed inthreaded openings 87 and 87 provided centrally through these bars,.and said threaded rod is rotated by a hand-wheel 88 held upon one of its ends. Projecting upwardly from the top surface of each of the movable bars 84 and 85 are a series of posts, as 90 and 91, and upon each of said posts is a freelyrotatable roller, or idler 92 and 93. When the, partially wrapped core is passed through the rollers 63 and '64 it is delivered to one of the wrapping devices 13, as shown in Fig. 3, and is moved between the series of idlers 92 and..93 of this wrapping device. For the purpose of guiding the wrapper so, as to overlap the upper exposed surface of the partially wrapped core, extending upwardly from the top surface of the bar 84 of each of the wrapping devices is a rod 94 having a free threaded end uponwhich is a thumb screw 95. Also upon the rod 94 is a revoluble circular disk 96 having a beveled peripheral edge, as 96*. Encircling said rod is a spiral spring 97 which is held between a plate 98 upon the upper part of this rod and an anti-friction bearing, as 99, which abutsv against the top surface of the disk. ,The spring 97 thereby serves to hold the disk 96 so as to yieldingly rest upon, or be disposed in close proximity to the top edges of the idlers 92 and 93 while the antifriction bearin 99 permits free rotation of the disk. As t e partially wrapped core is moved=between the series of idlers of each of the wrapping devices, the free portion of the wrapper will be engaged by the beveled edge of each of the disks 96, and it will then be guided so as to overlap the surface of the core which is exposed to the underneath surface of each disk. Obviously by-arranging the wrapping devices 13 upon quarterturns of the frame 67, as heretofore mentioned, each surface of the partially nately exposed to the circular disk of one of the devices, and the,,core will thereby be wrapped with any desired number of layers of the wrapping material. The carriers 70 are also alike in formation, and one\of said carriers is disposed between two of the wrapping devices 69. Each of the carriers 70 has a supporting ,plate 100 which is fastened to the frame67 of the wrapping mechanism, and the-central part of said supporting plate is cut-out to provide a vcircular opening101. Rotatable upon an anti-fricripheral edge toothed, as at 104, and having I a beveltoothed face 105. in a bearing provided upon each of these brackets is journaled a short shaft 109. Upon one end'of each of the short shafts- 109 is a bevel pinion 110, each of which is in mesh with the bevel teeth 105 of each of the annular gears 103. On the opposite end Lof each of the short shafts 109' is a gear 111,
and also upon each of these short shafts are pivotally held the central part of thearms 112 and 113, both of which are correspondingly curved and pivoted to the short shaft in a manner to provide substantially X-shaped levers 114;, Upon one end of each of the arms 112 and 113 of each i I of the lovers is a stud 115 and 116. Each of the studs 115 carries a revoluble roller 117, and upon each of the studs 116 is a freely rotatable roller 118 which is in alinement with the roller 117. 'Also upon.each of the studs 115 is a pinion 119, each of which is connected to one of the rollers 117 so as to simultaneously rotate the rollers wheii the pinions are revolved, and each of said pinions is in mesh with one of the gears 111. Thus when the short shafts 109 receive rotation from the annular gears 103 rota tion will be imparted to the gears 111, to the pinions 119 and to the rollers 117. The
levers 114 serve to force the rollers 117 and 118 of each of the carriers toward each other .so that these rollers will convey the core as it is wrapped by one of the wrapping devices to the next wrapping device, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Each of the levers, is
' adapted to permit the rollers 117 'and 118 to be adjusted so as to be relatively spaced apart, for a suit-able distancewhereby the wrapped core may be properly engaged for conveyance from the carriers to the wrap ping devices, and for this purpose I employ a-screw-rod 120 which is threaded through correspondigly threaded openings 1.21 provided in each of the arms 112 and 113 of each of the levers. Upon one end of each of the rods 120 is a head 122 which serves to permit said rod to be manually adjusted for spacing the rollers 117 and 118 of'each carrier a suitable distance apart,
in order to providefor carrying wrapped cores 'ofvarious dimensions through themachine as well as providing for the variations of the size of thewrapped core while undergoing the different stages of being formed to completifin as. it is conveyed through the wrapping mechanism.

combination, a substantially square frame in cross-section, a drive shaft, a plurality of supporting plates, each fastened at spaced intervals upon quarter-turns of the frame, a plurality of brackets, one of which is adjustably held to each of the supporting plates, a plurality of threaded rods, each having one of its ends rotatably held to each of the brackets. and each of said rods being screwed through the threaded opening of each of the supporting plates, a plurality of bars, two of which are movable upon each of the brackets, each pair of said bars being spaced apart, a plurality of sets of rollers, one set being freely rotatable upon each of the movable bars, and each pair of the sets of rollers being spaced apart so as to permit a partially wrapped square, or rectangular core of flexible material to be guided therebetween, means provided upon each of the brackets and adapted to permit the sets of rollers thereon to be manually adjusted to and from each other, a plurality of yielding rotatable disks, one upon each of the brackets and serving to dispose a layer of the wrapper alternately upon each surface of the core thereof as the core is transmitted between each pair of the sets of rollers, a plurality of carriers each connected upon quarter-turns of the frame between two of said supporting plates, all of the carriers be ing adapted to be operated in unison by the drive shaft, and each of said carriers being adapted to deliver the partially wrapped .core to one of the pairs of sets of said rollers, and a mechanism adapted to form a folded square, or rectangular core of flexible material and partially wrap said core'with a layer of flexible material.

In a machine for making packing, in combination, a frame, a drive shaft journ'aled in the frame, a plurality of supporting plates fastened at spaced intervals upon the frame, a plurality of annular gears, one of which is rotatable upon each of the supporting plates, and each of said annular gears having teeth upon its inner peripheral edge and having bevel teeth upon one of its faces, a plurality of gears held upon the drive shaft, one of which is in mesh with the inner teeth of each of the annular gears where by said annular gears may be rotated in unison, a plurality of short shafts, a plu rality of bevel gears, each held upon one end of each of the short shafts, and one of said bevel gears being in mesh with the bevel teeth of each of the annular gears, a plurality of gears, one of which is heldupon the opposite end of each of the short shafts, a plurality of pairs of levers, each pair being pivoted upon one of the short shafts in substantially an X-shape, a plurality of studs, one projecting from the similar face of each of the levers, a plurality of pinions, one held upon one of the short studs of each pair of levers, and meshing with the gear upon one of the short shafts, a plurality of rollers, one being freely rotatable upon the short stud of the second lever of each pair, means adapted to adjustably hold the arms of each of the bell-cranklevers so that the rollers thereof will be suitably spaced apart for carrying a core of flexible material therebetween, and a plurality of wrapping devices supported at spaced intervals upon the frame, .each of said devices being adapted to dispose upon the core a layer of flexible wrapping material.

In a machine for making packing, in combination, a frame, a drive shaft journaled in the frame, a plurality of supporting plates fastened at spaced intervals upon the frame, a plurality of annular gears, one of which is rotatable upon each of the supporting plates, and each of said annular gears having teeth upon its inner peripheral edge and having bevel teeth upon one of its faces, a plurality of gears held upon the drlve shaft, one of which is in mesh with the inner teeth of each of the annular gears whereby said annular gears may be rotated in unison, a plurality of short shafts, a plurality of bevel gears, one held upon one end of each of the short shafts, and one of said bevel gears being in mesh with the bevel teeth of each of the annular gears, a plurallty of gears, one of which is held upon the opposite end of each of the short shafts, a plurality of pairs of levers, each pair being pivoted upon one of the short shafts in substantially an X-shape, a plurality of studs, one pro ecting from the similar face of each of the levers, a plurality of pinions, one held upon one of the short studs of each pair of levers, and meshing with the gear upon one of the short shafts, a plurality of rollers, one being freely rotatable upon the short studs of the second lever of each pair, a screw adapted to adjustably hold the levers of each pair so that the rollers thereof will be suitably spaced apart for carrying a core of flexible material therebetween, and a plurality of wrapping devices supported at spaced intervals upon the frame, each of said devices being adapted to dispose upon the core alayer of flexible wrapping material.

In a machine for making packing, in combination, a frame, a drive shaft journaled in the frame, a plurality of supporting plates fastened at spaced intervals upon the frame, a plurality of annular gears, one of which is rotatable upon each of the supporting plates, and each of said annular gears having teeth upon its peripheral edge and having bevel teeth upon one of its faces, a plurality of gears held upon the drive shaft, one of which is in mesh with the inner teeth of each of the annular gears whereby said annular gears may be rotated in unison, a plurality of short shafts, a pluralityof bevel gears, each held upon one end of each of the short shafts, and one of said bevel gears being in mesh with the bevel teeth of each of the annular gears, a plurality of pairs of freely rotatable rollers, each pair being provided upon one of the supporting plates, means adapted to adjustably hold each pair of the rollers so as to be suitably spaced apart for carrying a core of flexible material therebetween, and a plurality of wrapping devices supported at spaced intervals upon the frame, each of said devices being adapted to dispose upon the core a layer of flexible wrapping material.

In a machine for making packing, in combination, a frame, a drive shaft journaled in the frame, a plurality of supporting plates fastened at spaced intervals upon theframe, a plurality of annular gears, one of which is rotatable upon each of the supporting plates, and each of said annular gears having teeth upon its inner peripheral edge and having bevel teeth upon one of its faces, a plurality of gears held upon the drive shaft, one of which is in mesh with the inner teeth of each of the annular gears whereby said annular gears ma be rotated in unison, a plurality of short s afts, a plurality of bevel gears, one held upon one end of each of the short shafts, and one of said gears being in meshwith the bevel teeth of each of the annular gears, a plurality of gears, one of which is held upon the op osite end of each of the short shafts, a p rality of pairs of levers each pair being pivoted upon one of the short shafts in substantially an X-shape, a plurality of studs, one projecting from the similar face of each of the levers, a plurality of pinions, one held upon one of the short studs of each pair of levers, and meshing with the gear upon one of the short shafts, a plurality of rollers, one being freely rotatable upon the short stud of the second lever of each pair, a screw adapted to adj ustably hold the levers of each pair so that the rollers thereof will be suitably spaced apart for carrying a core of flexible material therebetween, a plurality of wra ping devices supported at spaced interva s upon the frame, each of said devices being adapted to dispose upon the core a layer of flexible wrapping material, and means adapted to form the core of flexible material.

In a machine for making packing, in combination, a drive shaft journaled in the frame, a plurality of supporting plates fastened at spaced intervals upon the frame, a plurality of annular gears, one of which is rotatable upon each of the supporting plates, and each of said annular gears having teeth upon its peripheral edge and having bevel teeth upon one of its faces, a plurality of gears held upon the drive shaft, one of which is in mesh with the inner teeth of each of the annular gears'whereby said an-.
nular gears may be rotated in unlson, a plurality of short shafts, a plurality of bevel gears,"each held upon one end of each of the short shafts, and one of said bevel gears being in mesh with the bevel teeth of each of the annular gears, aplurality of brackets, one fastened to each of the supporting plates, a plurality of pairs of freely rotatable rollers, each pair being provided upon one of thebrackets, means adapted to adjustably hold each pair of the rollers so as tobe suitably spaced apart for carrying. a core of flexible material, a plurality of wrapping devices supported at spaced intervals upon the frame, each of said devices being adapted to dispose upon the core a layer of flexible wrapping material, and means adapted to form the core of 'flexible material.
