To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. CLoUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at T iflin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful 'Bolt and Rivet Header, of which the following is a specification.
By way of explanation it may be stated of bolt heading and forging machine, Hie heading slide carries a plunger or upsettin tool which codpcrates with a fixed die or manly held-upon the frame of the machine, a movable die,
acting at right angles to the heading slide, coiiperatin with the fixed die. The heading slide is operated by a shaft and this shaft, hrough the medium of a toggle, wedge or the like, actuates the movable die. Ordinarily the parts which operate the heading slide exercise their proper functions so far as the actuation of the movable die is concerned, but at times the operator may fail to place the bar stock properly in the grooves of the gripping dies and as a consequence the movable die cannot advance to its normal position. In order to avoid injury to the machine, through the contingency above mentioned, it is necessary to provide a safety relief device of some sort in the mechanism which operates the movable die.
In one form of safety relief, heretofore known, the movable die is connected with some fixed portion of the machine by a toggle joint which may be described as the main toggle joint; the main toggle joint being connected toggle joint which may be denominated the auxiliary toggle joint. With this auxiliary toggle joint 3, spring has been directly connected to afford the necessary relief, when through an improper insertion of the stock, the movable die is prevented from moving to its normal position. The expedient last above described has been unsuccessful, primarily. for two reasons. First, it has been impracticable to provide a spring sufficiently heav to give the necessary gripping pressure untf foregoing, if the-members of the auxiliary to the cross head by another parts being positioned as r normal conditions, unless the two members of the auxiliary toggle stood toggle .were permitted to stand at an angle sufiicient to guard against cramping, the spring in practice cannot be made heavy enough to give the desired die pressure during the normal operation of the machine.
In the present invention, three toggle joints are provided; a main toggle joint which connects the movable die with a fixed portion of the machine, an auxiliary toggle joint which connects the main toggle joint with the cross head, and a supplemental toggle joint which operatively connects the auxiliary toggle joint with the relief spring.
One object of thepresent invention is, there fore, the provision of this supplemental toggle joint to which the relief spring is 0peratively connected, the construction being such that an increased leverage for the spring is provided, it being possible to use a lighter spring of commerciably possible dimensions, and still secure the desired pressure upon the movable gripping die.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally, and to increase the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro- 'ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the 3 details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood .that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure 1 shows in top plan, accordance with the present invention, the they will appear during the normal workin of the machine. Fig. 2 is a top plan showing the relief device in operation; and Fig. 3 is a top plan showing a modification.
. Although the invention herein disclosed is adapted to be assembled with forging and heading machines of widely different forms, the machine, .by' way of illustration is shown as comprising a frame 1, supporting for rotation a transverse actuating shaft 2. The shaft 2 is equipped with a crank 3, connectedjwith a pitman 4 which, in its turn, is connected with. a heading slide 5, mounted toreciprocate upon the frame 1. A fixed gripping die 6 is supportedupon the frame one form of machine constructed In v 1 and coiiperates with a movable gripping ment 14.
Mounted to reciprocate in the frame 1, parallel to the heading slide 5 is a cross head which in Figs. 1 and 2 is denoted by the numeral 15, the cross head in Fig. 3, for convenience in description being designated by the reference character 16.
An auxiliary toggle joint 17 is operatively connected with the main toggle joint 8. The auxiliary toggle joint 17 comprises a primary link 18, one end'of which is mounted upon the pivot element 14, and a lever 19,
which may be in the form of an approximately triangular plate, the particular form of the plate 19 being immaterial. The lever 19 is pivotally supported upon the cross head 15 or 16 as indicated at 20, and is piv-. oted to the link 18 a indicated at 21.
The cross heads 15 and 16 are longitudinally slotted as indicated at 22, and located in the slot 22 is a cam 23 which is secured to the actuated shaft 2. The cm 23 is adapted to engage rollers 24, indicated in the slot 22 and supported upon shafts 25.
The foregoing embraces the common features of both forms of the invention and the form of the invention which is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 will be described first, so far as its individual details are concerned.
Referring, then, to Figs. 1 and 2, a supplemental toggle joint 26 is supported upon the cross head 15, the joint 26 comprising a link 27 pivotally connected as indicated at 28 to the lever 19, intermediate the fulcrum 20 of the lever and the connection 21 between the lever of the link 18. The supplemental toggle joint 26 further includes a lever 29, whichin this instance is shown as of an lar form, the lever 29 bein fulcrumed intermediate its' ends as indicated at 30 upon the cross head 15. A pivot element 31 unites the one end of the lever 29 with the link 27. A pivot element 32 unites the other end of the lever 29 with a rod 33, extended longitudinally of the cross head 15 and mounted to slide with respect to the cross head. One end of the rod 33 protrudes beyond the rear end of the cross head 15 and is surrounded by a compression spring 34 abutting against a Washer 35 which is held upon the rod 33 by superposed nuts 36 or in any other manner.
' Referring to the drawings it will be understood that when the sha 2 is rotated,
' aoeavee the cam 23 will impart a sliding movement to the cross head 15 and advance the cross head, the heading slide 5 being actuated through the medium of the pitman 4 and the crank 3.
When the cross head 15 is moved as hereinbefore described, the lever 29, the rod 33, the link 27 and the lever 19 remaining in the positions shown, and the link 18 moving to actuate the main toggle 8 and the die 7. The spring 34 will give the necessary working pressure to the movable die 7. It is 'to be observed that the point elements 14, 21,
20 and 28, 31 and 30 are out of line and as a consequence the spring 34 is called upon to handle a proportionately small amount of the total gripping pressure. The spring 34, therefore, may be of a workable size and still secure the necessary die pressure under normal conditions. and the link connected part of the lever 19 stands at an angle which avoids any possibility of cramping. When, however, as shown in Fig. 2, the movable die is prevented from advancing to its normal positiontially as hereinbefore described, the supplemental togglejoint 37 and attendant parts, alone, being changed. The supplemental toggle joint 37 includes the link 38 which is pivoted at 39.to the lever 19, the link 38 being-pivoted at 40 to a lever 41, fulcrumed at one end as indicated at 42 upon the cross head 16. A rod 43 extends transversely of the cross head 16, the inner end of the rod 43 bein pivoted as indicated at 44 to the interme iate portion of the lever 41. A compression spring 45 abuts against one side of the cross ead 16 and bears against a washer 46, held upon the rod 43 by means of superposed nuts 47.
The operation of that form of the invention which is shown in Fig. 3 does not differ materially from the operation of the form of the invention which is shown in Figs. 1 and Furthermore, the link 18' 2, the operation of the structure shown in Fig. 3 being entirely obvious when the operation of the structure shown in Fig. 1 is understood.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a heading and forging machine, a
frame; a movable gripping die slidable upon frame; an auxiliary toggle joint mounted upon the cross head; means for operatively connecting the auxiliary toggle joint with the die; a supplemental toggle joint connected with the auxiliary toggle joint and a mounted upon the cross head; and a spring operatively connected with the supplemental toggle joint.
2. In a heading and forging machine, a frame; a movable gripping die slidable upon the frame; a cross head slidable upon the frame; an auxiliary toggle joint comprising a lever fulcrumed on the cross head, and a link operatively connected with the movable die; a supplemental toggle'joint comprising a lever fulcrumed on the cross head anda link connecting one end of said lever with the lever of the auxiliary toggle joint; and a spring operatively connected with the lever of the supplemental toggle joint.
3. In a heading and forging machine, a
frame; a movable gripping die slidable upon the frame; a cross head slidable upon the frame; an auxiliary toggle joint mounted upon the cross head, the toggle joint including a link operatively connected with the movable die and a lever; a supplemental toggle joint mounted upon the cross head, the supplemental toggle joint including a link connected with the lever of the auxiliary toggle joint, and a lever fulc'rumed on the cross head; a rod pivotally connected with the last specified lever; and a compression spring abutting against the cross head' and connected with the rod.
