To all whom it may concern Be it known that LFREDERIOK J. CAnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inTrap-Nests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trap nests and the object of this improvement is to provide an improved device of the character mentioned which will be simple in construction and eflicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
r The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on a line indicated by line 3-3 in Fig. 4, and Fig. 4
is a horizontal section similar to Fig. 2 but taken at the position indicated by line 4-4 in Fig. 3.
The preferred form of construction as i disclosed in the drawing comprises a frame made up of corner posts 3 a bottom casting 4 and upper casting or web 5. A conical shaped hood 6 rests on the top of web 5. An ear 7 is depended from the cast-ing 4 and a lever 8 pivoted therein, as at 9, a shiftable weight 10 is mounted on the lever 8 and adapted to be moved along the lever to accommodate the different weights of hens which will use the nest. Said door 19 is adapted to remain in its closed position by gravity, and upon an egg 20 passing through the chute 18 and contacting it, said door will open to allow the egg to pass through at the proper time into a receptacle 21 under the device.
Across .thetop of the tubular member 14 isa bar 22 which carries an anger member 23 which engages a suitable slot in the web 5 to effect rotation of the tubular member 14 upon vertical movement thereof. The lower portion of the tubular member 14 is provided with a similar bar 24 which carriers a point 25 in its centralportion and said point25 rests in the cup 11 of lever 8 3 to support the nest.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a device embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a section 1 of the same taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
p A stop 26 is carried on the lower edge of door 19 and is adapted to engage a stop 27 carried by the casting 4 to stop the rotation of the nest andits mounting. The stop 27 effectively locks the rotation of said nest memberuntil an egg is deposited in the nest 16 and passes through the chute 18 and engages the door 19 whereupon the door 19 yields substantially to the position indicated by the dot-ted lines 28 in Fig. 1 whereupon the stop 26 engages a member 29 .which prevents the'door 19 from opening until the nest member hasrotated far enough to permit the egg to be deposited in the receptacle 21 under the device.

When the nest member is in this position, the door opening 15, chute 18 and door 19 take the positions indicated by dotted lines 15, 18 and 19 respectively in Fig. 4.. If the hen has laid, the egg passes through chute 18 unlocks the device as already described and allows the nest member to rotate until it reaches the dotted line position indicated in Figs. 1 and 4:- In this latter condition door opening 15, chute 1S and door 19 are in the positions indicated by dotted lines 15", 18 and 19" in Fig. 4:. The contact member 32 of the electric switch engages the contact member 30 on casting 4 which action stops the rotation of the nest member. As soon as the hen raises the door 12 at the right hand of Fig. 1 and passes out through opening 15 the weight 10 causes the nest member to rotate in the opposite direction to its full line, or normal, position shown in Fig. 1 ready to be occupied again. The electric wires 38 leading from the contact member 30 and casting 1 are intended to be led to a place convenient to cause an alarm to notify the person in charge that the hen has laid so that a suitable marking may be placed on the egg to identify the egg. When it is desired to keep track of the eggs, a pen or coop, not shown, is provided on the side of the device next the right hand side of the figures so that a hen upon leaving the device must pass into such a coop. After the egg has been marked the hen may be released from the coop.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within thescope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a frame; a weighted lever pivoted in said frame; a nest pivotally mounted on said lever; a worm carried by said nest, engaging said frame and adapted to cause rotation of said nest upon swinging of said lever; a chute on said nest; a door on the lower end of said chute; a stop carried by said door and adapted to engage said frame to arrest movement of said nest and to be disengaged from said frame by the weight of an egg; and a weight mounted in said frame and adapted to turn said nest to its normal position, substantially as described. In combination, a frame; a weighted lever pivoted in said frame; a nest pivotally mounted on said lever; a worm carried by said nest, engaging said frame and adapted to cause rotation of said nest upon swinging of said lever; a chute on said nest; a door on the lower end of said chute; a stop on said frame; and a stop on said door adapted to cooperate with the stop 011 said frame to arrest rotation of said nest, said stops being adapted to be disengaged upon opening of said door permitting the continuation of the rotation of said nest, substantially as described.
3. In combination, a frame; a weighted lever pivoted in said frame; a nest pivotally mounted on said lever; a worm carried by said nest, engaging said frame and adapted to cause rotation of said nest upon swinging of said lever; a chute on said nest; a door on the lower end of said chute; a stop on said frame; a stop on said door adapted to'cooperate with the stop on said frame to arrest rotation of said nest, said stops being adapted to be disengaged upon opening of said door permitting the continuation of the rotation of said nest; and a guide on said frame providing a path for the stop on said door between said guide and the stop on said frame, substantially as described.
4. In combination, a frame; a weighted lever pivoted in said frame; a nest pivotally mounted on said lever; a worm carried by said nest, engaging said frame and adapted to cause rotation of said nest upon swinging of said lever; a chute on said nest; a door at the lower end of said chute adapted to be opened by an egg; a stop on said frame; a stop on said door adapted to cooperate with the stop on'said frame to arrest rotation of said nest, said stops being adapted to be disengaged upon opening of said door permitting the continuation of the rotation of said nest; a detent on said nest engaging'said frame to define one limit of the rotary movement of said nest; and a weighted lever pivoted in said frame and supporting said nest in the latter, substantially as described.
5. In combination, a frame; a weighted lever pivoted in said frame; a nest pivotally mounted on said lever; a worm carried by said nest, engaging said frame and adapted to cause rotation of said nest upon swinging of said lever; a chute on said nest; a door on the lower end of said chute; a stop on said frame; a stop onsaid door adapted to cooperate with the stop on said frame to arrest rotation of said nest at substantially the middle of its rotary movement, said stops being adapted to be disengaged upon opening of said door permitting the continuation of the In testimony whereof I have signed my rotation of said nest to the end of its forname to thisspecification in the presence of Ward rotary movement; a Weighted lever two subscribing Witnesses.
