Be it known that I, LEON- L., BLUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and

State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Salt and Pepper Shakers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in salt and pepper shakers and has for its object the roduction ofa device of this character whlch will be adapted to accommodate both salt and pepper and from which either may be discharged at the option of the .user.

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a cylindrical hollow body 1 formed preferably of glass or other suitable. material which is open' at its upper end. The interior of the body 1 is divided by a medial longitudinally extending partition 2 into two compartments -3 and 3 adapted for the reception respec tively of salt and pepper orother granulated spices or material which it is desired to accommodate. Said open end of sald body is closed by a circular closure 4 which is removably secured to-said body through conventional bayonet joints, said closure be ing provided with inwardly extending diametric pins 5 which are adapted for engagement with angular slots 6.provided in the upper end of said body, as will be readily understood.

Provided in the closure 4 are twosets or lines, of discharge openings 7 and 7 inclined or angularly disposed, as clearly shown in 5 Figs. 2 and 4, the inner ends of said pas sages being adapted, when the closure 4 is in operative position, to register with the outer edge of said partition, as clearly 1 shown in Fig. 4. Said edge of said partit1on is provided at its opposite sides with substantially V-shaped recesses 8 and 8' adapted respectively for registration with the inner ends of passages 7 and 7 the bottoms of said recesses being inclined to correspond with the angular disposition of said passages, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. With the arrangement set forth, it will be seen, that the recesses 7 will communicate with the compartment 3- and the recesses v7 with the compartment 3", the under side of the closure 4 engaging snugly against the correspending edge of the partition 2, when said closure 1s in operative position, to insure a tight connection and prevent the commingling of the contents of the two compartments.

In using the shaker the same is held in the hand with the lines of discharge passages or openings horizontally disposed, the shaker being then inclined, as shown in Fig. 4. Upon such inclination it will be seen that the contents of the compartment 3' or 3: which is positioned uppermost will slide or shift downwardly upon the upper side of the partition 2 and discharge through the corresponding discharge openings which will lead downwardly therefrom, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The contents of the other or lowermost of said compartments will correspondingly shift upon the-upper surface charge openings which communicate with said compartment, being positioned at the upper side thereof, or adjacent the partition 2, the contents of the last mentioned compartment will not be brought in registration therewith and hence will be prevented from discharging from the shaker, being retained discharge from the last mentioned compartment is further prevented by reason of the 'ings communicating therewith, the contents therefrom being, with this disposition of the discharge openings, required to pass upwardly in order to discharge from said passages. While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r 1. A shaker of the class described comprising a hollow body; and a substantially medially disposed longitudinally extending partition in said body dividing the interior thereof into two independent; compartments one end of said body having two sets of discharge openings arranged adjacent said par-. tition and leading angularly therefrom, each of saidv sets of openings communicating with one of said compartments, substantially as described.

2. A shaker of the class described comprising a hollow body; and a substantially medially disposed longitudinally extending partition in said body dividing the interior thereof into two independent compartments, one end of said body having two sets of discharge passages arranged adjacent said partition, each of said sets of passages commnnicating with one of said compartments, the end of said partition adjacent said discharge passages being recessed at its opposite sides for registration with the inner ends of said passages, substantially as described.

A shaker of the class described comprising a hollow body; and a substantially medially disposed longitudinally extending partition in said body dividing the interior thereof into two independent compartments, one end of said body having two sets of discharge passages arranged adjacent said partition and leading angularly therefrom, each of said sets of passages communicating with one of said compartments, the end of said partition adjacent said discharge passages being recessed at its opposite sides for registration with the inner ends of said passages, the bottoms of said recesses being inclined to correspond with the angular disposition of said passages, substantially as described.

A shaker of the class described comprising a hollow body open at one end; a substantially medially disposed longitudinally extending partition in said-body dividing the interior thereof into two independent compartments, the outer edge of said partition terminating at said end of said body; and a removable closure for said end of said body adapted, when in operative position, to engage against said edge of said partition to form a tight connection, said closure being provided with two sets of discharge passages so arranged that, when said closure is in operative position, the inner ends'of said passages will terminate in registration withsaid edge of said partition, said passages leading angularly from said partition, said edge of said partition being recessed to establish communication between the inner ends of said passages and said compartment, substantially as described.

5. A shaker of the class described comprisinga hollow body open'at one end;-a substantially medially disposed longitudinally extending partition in said body dividing the interior thereof into two independent compartments, the outer edge of said partition terminating at saidrend of said body; and a removable closure for said end of said body adapted, when'in operative position, to engage againstsaid edge of said partition to form a tight connection,

said closure being provided with two sets of discharge passages soarranged that, when said closure is in operative position, the inner ends of said'passages will terminate in registration with said edge of said partition, said passages .leading angularly from said partition,= said edge of said partition being recessed to establish commu nication between the inner ends of said passages and said compartment, the bottoms of said recesses being inclined to correspond with the angular disposition of said passages, substantially as described.
