To all whom it may concern:
receive complementaryshaped flanged type which said cylinder presents in opposition to the other member of the printing couple. As ordinarily constructed, the printed impressions from such a machine are irregular in accordance with the length of the lines oftype; because the lines of type extend parallel with the axis of the printing cylinder and are successively pressed between the printing couple with a given pressure which, being the same for each line, is variable per unit of length of the line. For instance, a
- line one-half the length of the cylinder would be printed with apressure, per unit of length of that line, double the pressure per unit of length of a line which is the full length of the cylinder, and consequently the shorter the lines the more deeply and darkly they are printed.
Therefore, it is the object of my invention to provide such a machine with means to equalize the pressure per unit of area upon the successive lines of type incompensation for variations in the. length of the lines; so
that the printed impressions made from 1 successive lines shall be uniform in depth and darkness regardless of differences in the length of said lines.
My invention provides make-ready de vices adapted to be used in connection with the successive lines of type to sustainaportion of the pressure in the regions of the line which otherwise would be blank, and, as hereinafter described, such devices include filling blocks which fit in the type channels in said cylinder and support surface strips adapted to extend in alinement with the. type faces and between the inking ribbon and the platen; each of said strips having tips, at one end, fitting in sockets in a band extending circumferentially on said drum, by which said strips are supported in proper relation with the lines of type; the opposite end of each strip having a lug with flanges engaged by the overhanging ledges in said channel; said strip having means to prevent its longitudinal movement and escape from said band, including a wedge abutment ,fitted'in the channel against the strip lug.
My invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.

In said figures; 1 indicates the frame of a multigraph machine having bearings 2 and 3 for the shaft 5 of the rotary printing drum 6 having the curved surface 8 with the undercutchannels 9 therein. Said drum 6 is conveniently provided with means for moving said surface8 about its center of curvature, including the handle 11 rigidly connected with said shaft 5.

I, IV and V, have flanges 21, fitting said undercut channels 9 in the curved face 8 of said drum 6. Such Variation in the printing pressure is effected to vary the depth of the impression of the printing, faces of said type 20 with respect to the paper 22, through the inking ribbon 23 which is interposed between said paper and said type faces as shown in Fig. I. In order to equalize the pressure per unit of area upon the successive lines of said printing type 20 in compensation for variations in the length of said lines, I interpose between said curved surface 8 of the drum 6 and the opposed surface 18 of the platen 17 a cam element or elements carried by said drum at its surface 8, preferably including several different patterns of surface strips, as hereinafter described.
As indicated in'Fig. II, the date, the title and the Salutation Dear sir compose three separate lines set in successive channels in the printing drum 6 and extending only a small fraction of the length of said drum. Consequently, unless means are provided to equalize the pressure per unit of length of the lines, said short lines will be much more deeply and darkly printed than the succeeding lines which are of greater length; because the whole pressure between the printing couple is borne by each line in succession as it is brought, by rotation of the printing drum, to a position normal to both axes of the printing couple; the inking ribbon 23, which is carried by said drum 6 extending between the spools 25 over the type face, between said faces and said platen, being pressed into the paper 22 more or less deeply in accordance with the pressure per unit of length of the line which is being printed. Therefore, I provide means to, bear a portion of the pressure at the ends of the short lines so as to lessenthe pressure upon the type faces composing such lines. Such means includes the filling blocks 27 conveniently formed of cast metal having flanges 28 complementary to and fitted in said channels 9 like the flanges 21 of the type 20 aforesaid. Said blocks have their heads 29 eccentrically disposed with respect to their webs 30, as shown in Figs. V and IX so as to support the surface strips 31, 32 and 33, as shown in Fig. II said strips extending radially beyond the printing surface of the type 20 and over-lying the inking ribbon 23, so as to be interposed between the latter and the paper 22 where the latter extends over the platen surface 18. It is to be noted that a strip similar to the strip 32 aforesaid, having filling blocks 27 to support it, may be employed at the lower end of the letter composition, the upperend of which is shown in Fig. II, such addltional strip 32 bearing a portion of the pressure at the end of the short lines formed by Yours truly or similar composition preceding the signa ture. Moreover if the signature is that o a person having a title such as manager a additional strip 33, with suitable filling blocks 27 supporting it, is employed to bear a portion of the pressure at the ends of that line. Each of said strips has a pair of tips 34 at one end thereof fitting in adjoining sockets 35 in. the band 36, as best shown in Fig. II said sockets 35 being respectively in alinement with the channels 9 in said drum, said band being flexible and resilient and fitted to the sectoral cylindrical surface of said drum, as shown in Fig. III, and having at one end the flexible hook 38 overhanging the end of said surface and engaging one of the guide rods 39, over which said ribbon23 extends, as shown in Fig. I. Said band 36 may have such hooks at each end, but I prefer to provide the opposite end of said band with a rigid hook such as shown at 40 in Fig. II, extending laterally-from the band and engaging in the recess 41 of the undercut abutment 12 which is conveniently secured to said drum 6 by the screw 43.
Each of said strips 31, 32 and 33 has at its end opposite said tips 34 a lug 45 including a Web fitted to extend in one of said channels S) and having flanges 46 engaged-by the overhanging ledges in said channel. I provide means to prevent longitudinal movement of said strips and their escape from said band, including resilient sheet metal abutments 48 which, as shown in Fig, X, have flanges 49 adapted to be engaged by the overhanging ledges in said channels 9 and, as shown in Fig. II, said wedge abutments are respectively fitted against said strip lugs 45 in said channels.
The form of my invention shown in Figs. XI and XII differs from that above described only as to the specific details of con struction of the flexible, sectoral, cylindrical band52 which is of greater circumferential extent than the band 36 above described, so as to be coextensive with the sectoral cylindrical curved surface 53 of the drum 54: which has a plurality of undercut channels 55 in its periphery similar to the channels strips 31, 32 and 33 above described but has hooks at its opposite ends differing in construction and arrangement from the hooks with which said band 36 is provided. R-eferring to Fig. XI it may be observed that the flexible hook 58 end of said band 52 by the rivet 59 overhangs and engages one end of said sectoral surface 53. As shown in Fig. XII, the hook 61 at the opposite end of said band 52 projects laterally like the hook 40 above described but has at the distal end thereof the flange 62 engaging the undercut abutment formed by the end rail 63 of the series which form the channels 55 between them.
Although I find it convenient to form the sockets in said bands 36 and 52 by milling notches in the peripheries thereof parallel with the axis of the drum and covering said notches with respective sheet metal strips 65 and 66 set in the perimeters of said bands, as respectively indicated in Figs. II and XII, and attached thereto only at the ends; it is to be understood that sockets capable of holding the tips 35 of said surface strips may be formed by undercutting the notches in said bands, without the use of said cover strips. Moreover, it is to be understood that said strips may be otherwise held than by a tip or tips at one end and a lug at the other. For instance, said strips may be provided with tips at both ends fitted to respective bands extending circumferent-ially on the drum, or, said strips may be provided at each end with resilient sheetmetal wedges, similar to the abutments 48 but directly connected with said strips, and such retaining means may be in unitary relation with the respective strips.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
