POST-COLLAR FOR ROCK-DRILLS.

T 0 all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD NETTELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Houghton, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Post-Collar for Rock-Drills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
The invention relates to the collars sometimes termed safety clamps, used on drill columns or posts below the drill, or below the column arm if the latter be employed.
The use of the ordinary construction of collar, which is formed in two sections and adjustably and removably clamped to the posts by two bolts, is attended with much inconvenience and loss of time in the loosening and tightening of the collar when adjusting the position of the drill or column arm.
The object of my invention is to produce a post collar of improved form which may be quickly and effectively adjusted in position and instantly loosened when required;
The distinctive features and the novel constructural elements of my improved collar and its appurtenances will be explained in the description hereinafter given of the particular illustrated embodiment of the device.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a post collar embodying my invention, showing the same applied to a drill post or column; Fig. 2 is a plan view with the drill post in section; Fig. 3 is a similar view with part of the collar in section, and showing the gripping dog in the outer, inactive position; and Fig. 4 is a detail in vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, a portion of the drill post being shown in side view.
A post collar in accordance with my invention comprises an unsplit continuous ring 10, of suiticient size to loosely embrace the drill post or column 11, the ring being slipped over the column at an end thereof, any obstructing parts on the post being temporarily removed for the purpose. Formed on or secured to the collar 10 at one side, is a lateral arm 12, which is formed with an opening to receive a dog 13, the inner edge 14 of which extends into the bore or eye of the ring 10 through an opening 15 therein which communicates with the opening 16 in the arm 12 in which the dog 13 is seated. The opening 16 is tangential to the bore of the rlng and produces at the inner end, horizontal ledges 17 on the ring 10 at each side of the opening 15, on which ledges lateral arms 18 on the dog 13 are received as the dog is moved inward against the post, under the influence of a key 19. The ledges 17 and arms 18 thus give an increased support to the dog. The key 19 is preferably formedat its back edge, near the front end of the key, with a recess 20, whereby the key may partially embrace the outer arm 12 at the outer end of the slot or opening 16, the bottom of the recess 20 approaching or bringing up against the opposed vertical outer wall 21 of said opening 16, to permit of the assembling of the parts, the described position of the key permitting the dog to be slid into the opening 16, by a movement tangential to the ring and then a movement radially into the ring. The back edge 22 of the key 19 is tapered, while the inner edge 23 is, desirably, parallel with the longitudinal axis of the key. The back edge 24 of the dog 13 is also parallel with the longitudinal axis of the key, while its front edge 14 is curved and preferably struck on an arc approximately that of the perimeter of the post 11. With this arrangement, when the key 19 is moved to disengage its recessed portion 20 from the outer end of the arm 12, the key 19 will take a position with its inner edge 23 perpendicular to an intersecting line drawn diametrically through the collar 10; at the same time the key will act against the opposed back edge 24 of the dog 13, and move said dog inward against the drill post 11 in a direct radial line, so that the said post will be pressed by the front edge 14 of the dog against a diametrically opposite portion of the ring 10.
The use of my improved device overcomes the difficulties attending the use of the ordinary collar or safety clamp, because the removal of the latter, or the attaching of it when the drill is to be adjusted on the post, or removed therefrom, requires the manipulation of two bolts in addition to the various bolts pertaining to the drill that require to be manipulated; whereas my device requires only that a blow be struck on the rear end 25 of the key to tighten the dog, or against the front end 26 to loosen the dog. Moreover, the collar on a one-man machine often has to be loosened and tightened under conditions where promptness is imperative, and if, for instance, the drill machine and the column are to be raised on the post, the miner ordinarily must hold them in the elevated position until he loosens the collar, raises it against the column arm, and tightens it again with one hand. Obviously, under these conditions, my improved collar which can be loosened or tightened by a single blow of the miners wrench, is attended with important advantages.
The ring 10 is formed at the interior at the points on the sides of the ring opposite the dog 13 with recesses 30 that permit dirt to escape and prevent its collection on the ring, and also form angles tending to increase the gripping action of the ring. Additional recesses 31 adjacent to the dog 13 may be provided, although at this point they are not important. The various recesses may receive wedges, if it is desired to employ them.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
A post collar, comprising a ring having a cylindrical bore and provided with an arm at a side thereof, the collar having a radial opening, and there being an opening in the arm communicating with the radial opening and extending through the sides of the arm, the ring furthermore having lateral recesses at the sides of the radial opening, said recesses being complementary to the radial opening in the ring and to the opening in the arm, a dog in the said opening formed with lateral lugs adapted to be received in the lateral recesses, said recesses presenting horizontal ledges at their bote tom walls, and a. tapered key behind the dog and between the same and the outer end of the arm, the said key presenting a recess in which the arm is adapted to be received at the end of the opening in the arm.
