JOHN B. GLOWACKI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
POSITIONING DEVICE FOR YVINDOWS.
Application filed November 13, 1911.
T 0 all whom it may Gona-em Be it known that I, JOHN B. GLowAoKI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Positioning Devices for lVindows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numbers of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to positioning devices for windows and more particularly to a device adapted to yieldingly hold a window sash in its frame in adjusted position to prevent rattling, and has for its Object to provide means for locking said yielding means in holding position.
The invention in a preferred form, is hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings: Figure l is a front elevation, partly broken away, of a window frame and sash, illustrating the application of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section of the holding and looking means shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on the line III- 111, of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary face View of the sash illustrating a slight modification. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary View of a sash illustrating the means for actuating and securing the holding device in position.
As shown in the drawings: l, indicates the side or hanging rail of a sliding sash such as a window sash. 2, indicates the j amb of the window frame. The sash and frame may, of course, be constructed in the usual or any preferred manner. The hanging stile or rail on each side of the sash, is provided in its outer edge with a recess which may be constructed in any suitable manner by mortising or otherwise, as shown in Fig. 1, on each side of the sash and near the middle of said stile or rail.
The positioning and holding device comprises a casing 3, constructed of sheet metal or otherwise, and having a bottom and parallel side walls adapted to fit closely in the recesses in the sash. Said casing 3, may, if desired, be fianged outwardly to cover the jamb edge of the sash at said recess, as indicated atet, and if desired, said fiange may be turned over the outer side of the sash Specifieation of Letters Patent.
' rail, as shown at 5, in Fig. 3.
Patented Jan. 27, 191 1.
Serial No. 659330.
The open mouth of the casing is thus directed to the amb of the frame.
Rigidly secured in the inner wall of the casing at its middle, as shown in Fgs. l and 9, is a strong leaf spring, the upwardly and downwardly drected ends 6, of which are sprung or curved outwardly, and are provided with forks or yokes 7, at their outer extremities. J ournaled in each of said forks or yokes 7, is a wheel, comprsing a metallic or other suitable peripherally grooved body portion 8, and a heavy rubber ring 9, aording a resilient tire therefor. The eurvature of the leaf spring 6, at its ends is such as to normally project said wheels into positive engagement with the jamb edge.
For large and heavy windows, it may, of course, be desirable to provide said positioning members near the top and the bottom of the window to afford more secure engagement. F or this purpose two of the recesses are provided in the hanging stile of the sash, as shown in Fig. 4, and a shorter easing 10, (similar to the oasing 3, heretofore described) is Secured, one in each of said recesses, and with this arrangement, inasmuch as but a single friction roller is required, but a single leaf spring 6, is, of course, necessary.
The looking mechanism for the positioning deviee is as follows: An eccentrie 15, is rotatably Secured in the casing of the positioning device and levers 16 are connected at their inner ends to said eccentric and are pivoted near their center on pins 17, secured in said casing. A brake or frction member 18, is provided on the outer end of each of the levers 16, in a position to bear firmly against a friction wheel to lock the same in position against the jamb when the outer ends of the levers 16, are forced outwardly by the eccentric. As shown in Figs. 3, t and 5, the eccentrie is actuated by means of the head or knob 19, and is positively locked in adjusted position by the member 20, which engages the knob.
It is, of course, obvous that various details of the Construction may be varied and I may provide any suitable looking mechanisin in connection with the friction members whereby the same may be firmly locked into engagement with the sash by means of pressure applied thereto and oppositely from the jamb otherwise than by means of said springs, such pressure to be applied when the sash has been adjusted to the proper height and by means of any suitable mechanism for actuating such mechanism.
Of course, it is to be understood that the springs for engaging the friction members against the jamb, may be of any suitable kind and Secured in any suitable manner upon the sash, and that Very many of the details of Construction may be modified Without departing from the principles of this invention. I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent to be granted on this application otherwise than necessitated by the prior art. v
I claim as my invention:
l. A device of the class described embracing cam actuated bell cranks, rim segments Secured thereon, and rollers freely nested therein and adapted to be forced into locking arrangement thereby.
2. A devioe of the class described embracsaid rollers in one direction, cam actuated r bell cranks, and rim segmente thereon adapted to engage said rollers and to lock them in their projected position against an opposing surface.
In testimony Whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN B. GLOWACKI.
