T 0 all whom itmay concern Be it known that I, LEOPOLD KAssANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification,
The object of this invention is to provide means to lubricate the air cylinder of the air pump of a locomotive independently and separately from the usual steam cylinder and air pump feeds of the balanced pressure lubricator, in combination with which my improvements are illustrated, and which may or may not be used in connection with this lubricator. It is desirable that such air cylinder teed attachment should be capable of being set to a certain rate of feed, to remain undisturbed when once set, the feed being started and stopped by a valve independent of the feed regulating valve, and it is the particular object of the invention to provide this attachment with an automatically self-closing shut-oft valve, which will eliminate the danger of an operator carelessly leaving this valve open, and admitting a surplus supply of oil to the air cylinders of the air pump, thereby seriously impairing the efliciency of this vital part of the locomotive. It is further desirable that this attachment should be adapted to be secured either to the right or to the left side of the lubricator, and that it should be made either single or double, so as to be capable of use with a single pump or with two pumps, or with a compound pump, as all of these various kinds of pumps are used on locomotives according to the size and class of the locomotive, and the invention consists in the construction and adaptation of the parts to accomplish such desirable ends.

preferably of the kind shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,022,952, issued to Leopold Kassander and Otto Best, April 9th, 1912, and the oiling attachment received its supply of oil preferably in the manner described in that patent.
The body of the attachment is indicated at 11. It is provided with a passageway 12 extending through it and is secured at one side to the lubricator by a coupling 13 and flanged nut 14, and on the other side is closed by a flange cap 15. The coupling and flanged cap are interchangeable so that the attachment may be placed on either side of the lubricator, as may be desired.
At the bottom of the passageway 12 is a port 16 leading to a duct 17 which, in turn, leads to a chamber 18 at the bottom of which is removably secured a valve seat 19 having a restricted lower outlet port 20. The chamber 18 is closed at the top by means of a stufling box 21 above which is secured an apertured packing nut 22.
Arranged above the body 11 is an internally threaded extension 23, closed by an apertured packing nut 24:. and adapted to receive the threaded spindle 25 of a regulating valve, provided at its upper end with a head 26 adapted to be rotated by a wrench, or in some similar manner, and at its lower end with a valve tip 27 adapted to close the port 16.
Within the chamber 18 is arranged a shut-011" valve comprising a spindle 28 adapted to reciprocate within the stufling box 21 and provided at its lower end with a tip 29 adapted to close the outlet port 20. A collar 30 is arranged on the spindle 28 and between it and the lower edge of the stuffing box 21, there is placed a compression spring 31 adapted to exert a constant downward pressure through the collar 30, upon the valve tip 29 to keep the port 20 closed.
Means are provided for raising the shutoff valve comprising an actuating handle 32 pivoted to the spindle 28 and a bar 33 pivoted to the handle 32 and also to a-lug 34 provided at the side of the valve body.
A suitable sight chamber is arranged beneath the body 11. It comprises the sight glass 35 and nuts 36 arranged in the usual manner. From the sight chamber the usual pipe 37 leads to the cylinder of the air pump (not shown).
In Fig. 4 there is shown a double air cylinder feed attachment which is a combination of two attachments, the boXes of which are united. In this figure, 111 is the double body of the device and 112 is a passageway therein having two ports 160 leading to two ducts 170, each leading to oil chambers provided with shut-oil valves as in the case of the single device above described. Its mode of operation is the same as that of the single attachment.
The operation of the device is as follows: The regulating valve is set by means of a suitable tool to bring its tip 27 to such a position with respect to the port 16 to feed the desired amount of oil to the duct 17. This feeding being continuous, the chamber 18 becomes filled with all the oil that it will contain, and this body of oil surrounds all of the parts placed within it. Then it is desired to lubricate the air cylinder of the air pump of the locomotive the operator pulls down the handle 82 of the shut-off valve and lifts the tip 29 of the valve above the seat 19 and permits the oil to flow out through the port 20 pastthe side openings in the sight chamber and so on into the pipe which leads to such air cylinder. The shutoff valve is closed merely by ceasing to press down upon the handle as the compression spring within the chamber 18 exerts a constant downward pressure against the collar 30 of the valve and causes it to close instantly and firmly.
TV hat I claim is:
1. A sight-feed attachment for lubricators, comprising a body provided with a passageway adapted to receive oil from a lubricator, a chamber adjacent thereto, an oil duct between the passageway and the chamber, a feed-regulating valve adapted to control the flow of the oil to the chamber from the passageway, and an automatically self-closing shut-off valve adapted to control the discharge of the oil from the chamber.
2. A sight-feed attachment for lubricators,
comprising an oil-receiving passageway, an oil-containing chamber adapted to receive oil therefrom, a sight chamber adapted to receive oil from the containing chamber, a manually operated feed-regulating valve adapted to control the fiow of oil to .the containing chamber, and a valve adapted to be manually moved to permit the flow of oil from the containing chamber to the sightl eed chamber and provided with means for automatically closing such valve.
8. A sight-feed attachment for lubricators, comprising an oil-receiving passageway, an oil-containing chamber adapted to receive oil therefrom, a sight chamber adapted to receive oil from the containing chamber, a manually operated feed-regulating valve adapted to control the flow of oil to the containing chamber, and a valve adapted to be manually moved to permit the flow of oil from the containing chamber to the sightfeed chamber and provided with means for automatically closing such valve including a compression spring located within the oilcontaining chamber.
4. A sight-feed attachment for lubricators, comprising a body provided with a passageway adapted to receive oil from a lubricator, a chamber adjacent thereto, an oil duct between the passageway and the chamber, a feed-regulating valve adapted to control the flow of the oil to the chamber from the passageway, and an automatically self-closing shut-off valve adapted to control the discharge of the oil from the chamber, in combination with a coupling to the lubricator on one side of the body and a closing cap on the other, vith interchangeable connections whereby the device may be secured to either side of the lubricator.
