Description

J. H. MINER.
WHEEL FLANGE LUBRIGATOR.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 15, 1912. RENEWBD'APB. e, 1013.
T11 fi fim 1 m Patented Jan. 6, 1914.
To all whom it may cmwetn: I
Be it known that L JAMns H, Milton, citizen of the United States, residing at Lmnberton, Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVheel-Flange Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improve ments upon wheel flange lnbricators of the type employing a swinging receptacle for containing'oil or other lioicl lubricant, and carrying a pad adapted to be saturated with the oil and to contact with the Wheel flange on the swinging of the oil container.
' The present invention has, among others for its object, to provide means whereby oil will be feel to the pad only When tlie'saine is swung into Contact with the Wheel flange, the [low of oil at other times being cut. oil.
I have further aimed to improve the lnbricator in respects which will hereinafter appear.
lVitli these and possibly other objects in view, the invention includes the novel tfeatures of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinaiter described and part-icularly definecl hy the appended claims.
An embodiment; of the invention is illns trated in the accompanying drawings, in. Which-- V Figure l is an elevation showing the oilin device in proximity to a wheel, which is representative of a Wheel of any vehicle traveling upon rails; 2 is a part sectional elevation showing the pad in con-- tact with the Wheel flange and with the valve open.
Referring; by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates the wheel and 2 the oil reservoir, which may he oi any suitable sine and shape, and which eon-- tains within it. a tube 3 preferably of curved form and extending from the upper fronteorner to the lower rear Corner shown, being open at, both ends but closerl tothe interior of the oil receptacle except for valve opening 3% The receptacle is supported from a suitable hanger oarrierl by the truck by means of a leaf spring l which is designed .to normally support the receptacle with the end 5 of the wicla: 5 eontainetl in. the tube just out oi contact with the Wheel When the Wheel strikes a curve, the centrifugal action causes the container J; EIJU ng sotlioiently r ilt that the act with the Wheel Under norto sivirlgf the spring 4: for this purpose, with poll is brought, into cont flange to lubricate the same mal conditions one with the parts in the position shown in Fig. l the valve pen. to the tube closed by a *alvc ('3, iv .1 h tends npwai l throngrh the top of the container anti has its upper enrl connected to one are). ot a reciting lever 7.. The other arm oi this lover normally inclined upwardly in such a pl "sition as to be presseai lower (Will of a list." spriwz 8, savings, this action ing downwardly"upon the inclined portion oi. the lever and rocking it on its pivot to cause the valve to he hpeneli. The lest spring is capable of being; adjusted to vary the HPKOJI or time of opening}: by means 03? screw passing through the lcr spring 8 antl engaging the hanger 1Q l use 'Wllllli'i the tube a e inrlric i 'eli. as be fore stated. is indicates at 5, and v; in capable of he n inserted throo l the open upper (l; oi"
the tube anal pusher elov; proper positioin anti I prefer to make "1 tuhe tell: with a metalcei'iter 1' core reduce It (10 not limit myself to t strnction shown s '1, may be c terislly Without clcperting from of my invention.
Having; thus cleseriloerl invention what I claim is: V
1. in combination with a railway truck and WllEEL an oil receptacle supported "from the truck in proximity to the Wheel anti capable oi swinging tovaroi and from the. hange a lubricating parl earrierl by ssitl receptacle for contacting with the flange and mean controlled by the; siv I (m l the roost ole for governing the feed oil from the receptacle tn the pact.
ii wheel flange l hangecl inathe spirit ceptecle to said wielz tube and means c0n into exiict eon-1 v of oil from the receptacle to the g I I 1,083,901
trolled by the swinging of the receptacle lever to effect the opening and closing of 10 for opening and closing said passage. the valve on the swinging of the receptacle.
4:. A wheel flange lubricator comprising In testimony whereof, I afiix my signaa swinging lubricant receptacle, a Wick tube ture in presence of two Witnesses.
5 having a passage communicating with the nterior of the receptacle, :1 wlck in said JAMES MINER tube, a 'valye controlling said passage, a Witnesses: lever operating said valve, and an aclgust- W. A. SHIPMAN,
