JACOB EMIL SCHMANDT, OF HARRINGTON, WASHINGTON.
STRIIING-TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAcon E. SCHMANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Harrington, in the county of Lincoln and State of lVashington, have invented a new and Improved Striping-Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to striplng tools for use by painters in wagon work and the like, and particularly to that class of tools in which the handle forms a container for the paint, and has means for detachably holding a striping brush.
It is a design of my invention to improve in various particulars devices of the indicated character, to the end that eflioiency and convenience of operation may be promoted.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of a stripingtool embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section showing the piston; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a guide device for use in insuring straight edge portions in striping; Fig. 5 is a sectional side view of a modified form of nozzle;'and Fig. 6 is a similar view of a filling nozzle.
In constructing a tool in accordance with my invention, a tubular body 10 is provided, of proper size to hold the desired quantity of paint and constitute a convenient handle. The rear end of the tube is closed by a plug or cap 11 through which extends a piston or rod 12 having a knob or handle 13 at the rear end. On the forward end of the rod 12 is a piston designated generally by the numeral 14, and a spiral spring 15 surrounds the piston rod, the rear end of the spring abutting against the plug 11 and the forward end against the piston 14 so that the spring has a tendency to move the piston forwardly for ejecting the paint. The front end of the tubular body 10 is closed by a suitable cap 16, and a discharge nozzle 17 is formed with a threaded nipple 18, which takes into the cap 16. I Surrounding the nipple 18 at the inner side of the cap 16, is an Specification of Letters Patent.

annular filling 19 of lead to eflect a tight closure around the nozzle and cap, at the interior, and thus prevent the paint from being forced outwardly around the cap or nozzle. The nozzle is provided with a suitable cock or valve 20 commanding the passage 21 throughthe nozzle, and the latter is preferably curved laterally at its tip, as at 22. Brush holders 23 are carried by the nozzle and are adapted to detachably receive a suitable striping brush 24 in a position so that the brush will be disposed across the lateral outlet of the nozzle, as shown in Fig. 1. The brush holders 23 consist of collars adapted to clamp onto the shank of the nozzle between its outlet end and the valve 20, and each presents a pair of resilient clamping jaws 25 for ready attachment and detachment of the brush. In Fig. 5 isshown a straight nozzle 17 which may be substituted for the nozzle 17, and a brush 24 has a tubular head 24 to be slipped onto the said nozzle.
For filling the tubular body 10 a filling nozzle 26 is provided, having a threaded nipple 27 to take into the cap 16 and lead filling 19 when the nozzle 17 or 17 is removed. The filling nozzle has preferably a spherical strainer 28 over the front end, secured by a clamp band 29 or its equivalent, the strainer serving to exclude any foreign particles or lumps of paint.
In order to facilitate the forming of straight edge portions on the stripe, I provide a guide device designated generally by the numeral 30, and make the same readily attachable and detachable so that it may be fixed to the body 10 when required for use, or be removed or shifted in its position. Thus the guide consists of a split resilient cylinder 31, having lateral flanges 32, through which a screw or bolt 33 passes, the threaded shank of which receives a wing nut 34, the arrangement serving to tightly clamp the guide on the cylindrical bod 10. Ordinarily the guide is disposed ad iacent to the forward end of the body 10, and it is provided at the front end with a forwardly projecting arm 35, which is given a spiral curve at the outer end, thereby forming a flat, curved rest 36, which curves laterally at one side of the nozzle rearward of the front end of the latter.
The ejecting piston 14 consists of a front disk 37 having a nipple 38 at the rear side, which is interiorly threaded and receives the end 39 of the piston rod, will cause the cup washer to firmly clam the packing 41. The
construction positive of the paint behind t e piston.
Having. thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pa ent:
1. A striping tool, comprising a hollow body having a piston therein, a discharge cihtate the forming nozzle in 'front of said body and communicating therewith, means for holdin a striping brush onthe nozzle, and a guide to faof straight-side edges in striping, said guide being detachably held prevents the escape to the body adjacent to the nozzle and having a forwardl extending curved arm termmating in a ateral rest at one side of the nozzle, and rearward of the front end of the latter,
2. A stri ing tool comprisin' a 'hollow body, a disc arge nozzle at the out end of the body, means for holding a brush adjacent to the nozzle, and a guide device to facilitate the forming of straight side edges in striping said guide comprising a tubular, 1
split body aving clamping means to secure it on the body, and presenting-a forwardly extendin arm formed with a spiral curve and terminating in a flat, laterally disposed rest at its forward end.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB EMIL SCHMANDT.
