To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, .VILLIAM O. FoUGi-rr, Jr., and VVILLIs E. OBRYAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Brattleboro, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in GainingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine for gaining furniture or the like.
The invention embodies, among other features, a machine particularly adapted to accommodate furniture such as chairs, for the purpose of gaining the tops of the standards of the chairs to receive the cross brace or head of the chair.
A further embodiment of the invention resides in a machine in which a number of chairs of a standard size can be easily, quickly and efficiently gained without necessitating a complete adjustment of the parts of the machine, while at the same time the various parts of the machine are adjustable for the purpose of accommodating chairs of different sizes and which are to be gained in a particular manner or style.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine showing a chair body mounted thereon, a part of the frame being broken away; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an end View; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the manner of mounting the securing frame on the body of the machine; Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 77 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a frame or body 10 having rigidly secured at one end thereof a bracket 11, a horizontally extending shaft 12 being journaled upon the frame 10' and having keyed thereto a pulley 13, over which is passed a belt- 14, connected with a suitable driving mechanism for imparting rotation to the shaft 12, an end of the shaft being arranged to extend from one end of the frame 10, above the bracket 11, and having keyed thereto to rotate therewith a series of circular gaining saws 15 provided with offsets 16, formed on the peripheries thereof, and. provided for a purpose that will be hereinafter more fully disclosed. A semicircular track 17 is secured to one end of the frame 10 and a similar semi-circular track 18 is mounted on the outer end of the bracket 11, a segmentally shaped securing frame 19 being mounted upon the frame 10 and having secured thereto, at the ends thereof, suitable hangers 20 having guide rollers 21, 22 journaled thereon, the tracks 14, 18 being interposed between the guide rollers, the guide rollers 21 being preferably grooved to receive the tracks and the rollers 22 being provided with smooth peripheries to operate over the lower edges or sides of the tracks, thus preventing the securing frame 19 from being unseated from the frame 10 and permitting of operating the securing frame over the frame 10. The securing frame 19 comprises, more particularly, a plurality of longitudinally extending members 23 connected by segmentally shaped end pieces 2 1 and an intermediately arranged member 25. A bolt 26 is secured to the member 25 at the center thereof and extends upwardly through a segmentally shaped frame member 27, a cam 28, provided with a handle 29, being mounted to swing on the upper end of the bolt 26 and movable to engage the frame member 27 and move the same downwardly against the expansible action of a spring 30 mounted to encircle the bolt 26, an end of the spring abutting against the member 25 with the other end of the spring abutting against the under side of the frame member 27, the cam 28 being adapted to lock the frame member 27 in securing posit-ion.
Secured to the frame member are bifurcated bearings 31 having mounted to swing thereon suitable wedge members 32, said members extending into casings 33 mounted on the securing frame 19. A wedge 3-4 is slidably mounted in each of the casings 33 andthe lower end of each wedge member 32 is slotted with the inclined edge of the wedge member adapted to slide over the inclined edge of the wedge 3a to slide the wedge 34; in the casing 33, against the expansible action of a spring 35, each of the mentioned casings 33 being mounted adjacent blocks 36 mounted to slide on the securing frame 19, each block being provided with a socket 37 in which is mounted the head 38 of a bolt 39, the mentioned bolt being encircled by the spring 35 and slidably extending through the wedge 34 and through the slotted portion of the wedge member 32, a contractile spring 40 being mounted to encircle the bolt 39 with an end of the spring secured to the socket 37 and the other end of the spring secured to the casing 33. Now, when the wedge members 32 are moved downwardly to engage the wedges 34, the mentioned wedges engaging the springs 35 will cause the springs to engage the blocks 36, thus moving the blocks toward the left from the casings 33, the blocks being returned to normal position by the contractile action of the springs 14 when the wedge members 32 are moved from engagement with the wedges 34, it being understood that the wedge members 32 move downwardly with the frame member 27 and will also move upwardly with the frame member when the same is released by the cam 28 to permit the expansible action of the spring 30 to move the frame member 27 upwardly on the bolt 26.
In the use of the device described, when it is desired to gain the upper ends of the rear standards of a chair, it being understood that the rear standards are connected by the usual cross pieces, the mentioned standards are placed horizontally upon the securing frame 19, the standards being interposed be tween the securing frame and the frame member 27, with the forward ends 41 of the standards lying adjacent and abutting against the blocks 36. When the cam 28 is operated to move the frame member 27 downwardly, the blocks 36, through the medium of the wedge members 32 and the structure contained in each of the casings 33, will move the blocks 36 to the left from the casings 33 with the outer edges of the blocks engaging the sides of the standards of the chair, a pin 42 being mounted in one of the series of apertures 43, provided in the securing frame '19, one of the standards being interposed between one of the blocks 36 and the pin 42 so that when the blocks are operated as mentioned the standards will be moved thereby so that one of the standards will abut against the pin 42, thus securing the standards on the frame 19 and preventin any side movement of the standards, depending securing members 44 being adjustably mounted upon the frame member 27 and depending therefrom to engage the upper sides of the standards to prevent upward movement of the standards relatively to the securing frame, when the frame member is in lowered and securing position. As mentioned heretofore, the standards, when mounted upon the securing frame, are connected by cross pieces and secured to a bar 45. Mounted upon the securing frame are upwardly extending rods 46 adapted to abut against one of the cross pieces to prevent the standards and cross pieces from sliding longitudinally relatively to the securing frame 19. It will now be seen that when the standards, connected by the cross pieces, are mounted upon the securing frame as mentioned, when the frame member 27is in lowered and locked position, the standards will be rigidly held upon the securing frame and prevented from moving vertically or horizontally, it being understood that the forward ends of the standards project outwardly from an end of the securing frame a sufficient distance to permit all of the saws 15 to engage the standards when the securing frame is operated over the frame 10.
In order to determine the depth of the kerfs to be made by the saws in the forward ends of the standards, a plurality of slotted plates 48 are mounted upon the member 25 of the securing frame 19, adjusting screws 49 being mounted in the slots of the said plates and connected to the member 25, the upper edges of the plates being arranged so that the forward ends of the standards will repose thereon. Thus, if it is desired to raise or lower the forward ends of the standards for the purpose of determining the depth of the kerfs to be made by the saws, the screws 49 are loosened and the plates 48 can then be moved vertically, thus raising the forward ends of the standards, after which the screws 49 are rigidly reengaged with the member 25 of the securing frame 19 to retain the plates in rigid position.
A handle 50 is provided on the securing frame 19 and by grasping the handle and exerting a pull thereon the securing frame can be operated over the tracks 17, 18 to bring the forward end of one of the standards of the chair in engagement with the rotating saws 15. The securing frame 19 is then moved in the opposite direction over the tracks 17 18 and the other standard is similarly gained, after which the cam 28 is thrown upwardly, thus permitting the frame member 27 to move upwardly and the standards, connected by the heretofore mentioned cross pieces, are then removed from the machine and a new set of standards to be gained are placed in the machine and secured therein, the heretofore mentioned operation being repeated to properly gain the forward ends of the standards.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In a gaining machine, the combination with a frame including saws revolubly supported thereon, of a plurality of vertical semi-circular track members, one at each end of the frame and extending transversely thereto, and a work securing frame mounted to slide on the track members and movable versely over and above the said frame and 10 transversely to the said frame and said saws. the said saws.
