` Be it known that l, U'rro ERNST, a oitizen of the United States, and a resident of La rchmont, in the county of Westchester 5 and State of New `York, have invented a new and Improved Valve for internal-Com bustion Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
A' My invention relates to a form of valve for internal combustion engines, and is referably of the rotary type; and the o ject thereof is to provide an improved construction of this sort in which all of the defects inherent in rotary valves for gasolene m0- ]5 tors are eliminated.
To this end I construct my improved valve'with spindles .that are so mounted as to have a certain degree of lateral Lplay in the bearings which receive them, and I proto vide resilient means to hold the valve against its seat without opposing any ape preciable friction to the movement of the same. rllhis arrangement of parts allows for 4the necessary expansion of the valve in 2e the operation of the motor without permit ting leakage or in any way interfering with the efficiency of the worlringof the valve in practice.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings forming a part of this specification, in which the same characters of reference indicate the same parts inl both the views.

The edges of the ports i are elevated, forming seats 5, and 6 is a casing' in which is mounted the valve body 7. rlhis valve body is in the form of a hollow rotating cylinder having; four pairs 'ports 8, 9, l0 and 1l extending through its walls, the members of each pair of ports being located at diametrically opposite points, and the pairs of ports beingr spaced 900 apart around the circumference ofthe valve, and in such relative position as to make the first, second, fourth and third operate in succese sion in the order named.
The valve body is provided with spindles 12 extending from the ends thereof; and i3 represents a screw plug; which closes one end of the valve casing. This bushing has a bearing openingl ifi, and a similar opening l-/l is provided in the opposite end of the casing. These openings are of slightly greater diameter than the valve spindles 12, so as to give the valve body a certain amount of lateral play, and one of the spindles 12 projects beyond the adjacent end of the casing 6, and receives a driving: gear l5, by means of which this valve is operthe speed of the crank titi` s 5 shaft.

The valve casing has a pair of openings in its sides, shown at 2T and 2S, through which the fuel is supplied or the exhaust discharged, as the case may be.
According to my invention the same type of valve is vused for both the inlet and exhaust side oi the engine, and the valve casA ing (l will be provided Witn a longitudinal partition Q9 to separate one valve trom the other. ln Fig. 2 only one valve is shown, rlh@ valve is put in place through the open end of the casing before the plug l?, is screwed on, and the screw-threaded plug 13 is provided with polygonal projection so "hat it can be screwed up to press the wash` ers snugly against the. ends of the valve and prevent any leakage around the ends through the bearing openings 14.
The valve body 7 is held iirmly against tne seats 5 of the ports fl by means of the springs 2st pressing the shoe 17 against ,the opposite side oi" the valve, the valve moving laterally on account of the play ailorded by the openings le, into a snug-fitting position. These springs are ci course made of the proper strength to hold the valve to its seat at all times; but on account of the anti` friction rollers i9, the rotation orP the valve is not in v obstructed.

l wish to have it understood that the above description and accompanying drawings are illustrative only, sett-ing forth but one embodiment of my invention; but l do not wish to be limited to the details thereof, except in so far as indicated in the accompanying claims, reserving to myself the right to vary the arrangement of the parts as far as is permitted by the scope and spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. ln an internal combustion engine, the combination of a valve casing, a rotary valve body located therein, spindles projecting tl'ierefrorn and mounted in the walls of the casing, p: citing means carried by said spindles for the ends of the valve'body, said casing having a screwsthreaded opening at one end ot said valve body, and an adjustable plug for said opening to cause the end walls of the casing to have snug engagement with the packing adjacent the ends of the valve body.
2. ln an internal combustion engine, the combination of a valve casing, a rotary valve body mounted in said casing, said valve body having spindles projecting from its opposite ends, said spindles being mounted in the nfalls ot the casing, said Walls lia-ving bearings for said spindles or greater size than said spindles, to enable the' valve to nave side play for purposes of adjustment, and means for pressing said valve firmly to its seat. y
3. ln an internal combustion engine, the combination of a valve casing, arotary valve body received therein, said casing having a port communicating with the power chanr ber, the edges or said port constituting seats for the valve, spindles projecting from the endsv ol said valve, said spindles being mounted in bearings in the Walls of the valve casing, said bearings being of` greater size than the spindles to allow the valve to move laterally for adjusting the same, and
