LIQUID-FUEL BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SIDWELL M. ENGLISH and LAGRANGE V. EDMONDSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Renovo, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Fuel Burners, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in liquid fuel burners, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction which insures the even distribution of liquid fuel throughout an extended surface, and compels the liquid fuel to move over the end of an inclined platform in a thin layer, extended throughout the width of the platform or in a plurality of relatively small streams and commingle with air forced under the lower end of said platform, and thoroughly intermix with the air to form a good burning mixture.
A further object is to provide in a burner of the character stated, a liquid fuel distributing platform which is inclined from one end to the other, and on its upper face is formed with a plurality of longitudinal grooves which communicate at their upper ends with a relatively large transverse passage having at the center thereof, aconical distributer whereby the liquid fuel is caused to uniformly enter the several grooves and discharge uniformly at the lower ends of said grooves, so that the fuel is equally distributed throughout the entire width of the latform and insures a proper commingling of the fuel and the air, so'that a rich uniform mixture is had, the proportion being cont-rolled by the feed of liquid fuel.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating our improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a view in section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in transverse section ,on 'an enlarged scale on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Our improved burner comprises a single integral casting consisting of an outer casing 1 of general rectangular form which at its inlet end merges into an air chamber 2 in the form of an elbow. A relatively large pipe 3 communicates with the lower end of the elbow, and is adapted to be connected to any suitable fan blast apparatus. A relatively small pipe 4 communicates with an opening 5 in the rear end of the elbow in line with the center of casing 1. This pipe 4 is adapted to be connected to any suitable compressor or source of supply for compressed air, so that air may be forced through the casing. It is, of course, to be understood that these different sources of air are to be used separately and not together in accordance with the facilities at hand.
In the casing 1, our improved inclined liquid fuel distributing platform 6 is located. This platform 6 is integral with the casing, extends from side to side thereof, merges into the top of the casing at the upper end of the platform, and at its lower end terminates above the bottom of the casing and short of the discharge end of the casing as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This platform 6, on its upper face, is provided with a series of parallel grooves 7, the series extending throughout the entire width of the platform and adapted to convey the liquid fuel to the lower end of the platform over which it falls and commingles with the air passing under the lower end of the platform and burns at the point of juncture.
Near the upper end of platform 6 and on its upper face, an integral distributer 8 is pro vided, and this distributer is of general conical form, although it is not a true cone, yet all of its sides taper to a point at the top of the distributer, and this pointed end is in line with the center of a liquid fuel inlet 9 in the top of casing 1, and to which fuel is fed by a pipe 10 connected to any suitable source of supply.
The upper face of platform 6 at its upper end is formed with a transverse passage 11 into which the rear half of the distributer 8 extends, and at its ends said groove curves slightly downward, and discharges directly into the outer groove 7. By reference particularly to Fig. 5, it will be seen that all of the grooves, with the exception of the two central grooves, communicate with this passage 11, but at the entrance ends of said grooves 7 their bottoms are in a slightly higher plane than the bottom of passage 11. This difference in elevation is graduated, so
that the grooves nearest the center have their bottoms higher thanthe others from the intermediate portions toward the sides of the platform. This is designedly true such, liquid, fuel will be flowing down thev severalgroovesat an even depth, so that it is equally distributed throughout the entire surface of theplatform.

Thisequal distribution is carried out. even with the small-est quantity which can be fed, becausethe pointed; conical. distributer: compels the liquid to divide and run down the sides thereof into the several grooves, when. it falls from the inlet 9.
Various slight. changes might bemade in the general! form and arrangementof parts described: without departing from, our invention, and hence we do notlimit ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit andscope of the appendedclaims.
Having thus described our invention,
what, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Aliquidfuel burner comprising a casing havingla fuel inletin its top, an inclined liq uid fuel distributing platform in the casing,
said platform having a series of longitudinal;
grooves in its upper face, and a: tapering distributor in line with the fuel inlet to said casing, said distributer located at. the upper end of the platform, and adapted to compel the liquid fuel to. divide and pass uniformly down the several grooves of the plat-form, substantially as described.
