`Beit known t, at I, RALPH V. SAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Westmont, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania', have, invented certain new and useful Improve-` ments in Dumping-Cars; and I do hereby :declare the followin to be a full, clear, and

In order to lock the door in its closed position and to take the strain from the liftin chains and prevent the door from acci entally opening, I provide one or more latches or' bolts 15 mounted to slide in suitable bearings or hangers '1.6, secured to the lower face of the. door and arranged 'to be projected outwardly beyond the edge of the door bynieans of a spring 17 and, when the door is closed, engage the cylindrical surface of a 'tappet 18 which is mounted on the Patented Jan. 6, 1914. f

" order to release the car-door, the operating lshaft l is turned in the direction of the arrow shown in 'Fig V1, and in doing so the straight face of the tappet 18 comes in conv verse direction, which will wind up the chain, and, owing to the rounded end of the' latch, it will be pushed back when it comes to the cylindrical surface of the tappet and after assing the same, the latch will as sume-t e position shown in full linesl in Fig.1 l, whereby the weight of the door at that side will be sustained by the operating Shaft.
Although the shaft is -shown as extendino longitudinally of the car, it may be located transversely, inclined, or in any suitable position, as will be understood by those skilled in this art. vWhile I have shown and described my invention in considerable detail I do not Wish to be limited to the exact details of construction specifed, but may'use such sub-- stitutions, modifications or alterations as fall within the scope of my invention and as pointed out in the claims. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v l. The combination with a hinged cari door, of an operating shaft mounted on thel car body, flexible connections therefrom to the door, spring projected locking mechanism independently mounted on saiddoor retracted and supported by the said oper' ating shaft, arranged to support the door in its closed position.
2. The combination with a hinged cardoor, of an operating shaft mountedon the car body, flexible connections therefrom to the door, a spring-projected latch retracted and supported by lthe said operating shaft and independently mounted on said door and arranged to lock the same in its closed positiom 3. The combination with a hinged cardoor, of an operating shaft mounted on the car body, eXible connections therefrom to the door, aspring-projected latch independently 4mounted on the door for locking the same on said shaft, and
means on the operating shaft for retracting said latch.

The combination with a hinged cardoor, of an operating shaft mounted on the car body, flexible connection therefrom to the door, a latch mounted on the door adaptlatch, aspring mounted thereon adapted to normally keep the latch projected, a tappet on the operating shaft and adapted to engage the latch and to retract the same when the operating shaft is revolved to open the door.
