' This invention relates to forgings for car truck side frames made from a single piece of railed metal.
One of the objects ofthis invention is to provide a forging of such cross section that themetal' may be distributed in the top and {bottom memb,ers of the forging, and the bolster opening therein may be so placed as said top and bottom members-more e etive as to strength and clearance between the car body and the top of the rails of the track, the position of the bolster opening cooperating with the distribution of the metal in the top and bottom members of the forging to permit the clearance between th car body and the top of the rails, as afore? said, to be more effectively adjusted. flanges connected by a web, with unequal amounts of 'metal in said flanges and a bolster opening made-in said web by slotting the same along its longitudinal axis, between removing from said web a part thereof betweenthe upper edge of said slot and the lower side ofthe top flange of the section and expanding said web substantially at right angles to said slot; with the ends'of both top and bottom flanges arranged so that they shall be over the top of theaxle of the car to which the car truck side frame into the construction of which said forging enters, is attached, as herein more specifically described.

In Fig. 1, 1 is a rolled seotionyhaving a top flange 2; a-web 3; abottom flange 4, which is'rolled so as to have the cross section shown in Fig. 2; the top flange 2 having a longitudinal groove 2. throughout its length, and while bottom flange 4 has not said longitudinal groove, it may have such. longitudinal groove indicated by dotted lines 4. in Fig. 2. The rolled section 1 as thus formed, either while hot or. cold, by suitable apparatus is ,pressed so that the web thereof shall be ex-- lpanded substantially at right angles to slot 5, and so that the top and bottom flanges shall takethe form shown in Fig. 1. When this formation has taken-place, top flange 2 has a central part-'7 at ends 8,'8, connected by downwardly, extending parts 9, 9, and 4 has a central part 10 at ends 11, 11, connected to central part .10 by downwardly extending parts 12, 12. -The ends'll of 4: are so bent'as-to contact with the edges 13, 13, of the web and the under sides of the ends 8, 8, of the top flange 2, between points 14 and 15;'the expansion of the web-,- as aforesaid, causes the'fo'rmation of the bolster opening 16 in the forging.
