Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS L. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/VibauX, in the county of Dawson and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand stamps, and more particularly to that class of hand stamps which are termed self-inking stamps.
The primary object of this invention is to provide means for a stamp, as before mentioned, which will assure a clear impression upon the paper or other article to be stamped and thus preventing the possibility of a blur which is caused by many hand stamps now in use.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which is cheap to manufacture, simple, durable and efficient in use and one which may be readily operated.
Other objects will appear hereinafter as the description continues.
With the above and other objects in view this invention comprises a novel attachment for hand stamps which consists of certain specific combination, formation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended drawings, in which:

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like references indicate like parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the stationary frame of an ordinary self-inking hand stamp provided on the upper portion thereof with recess for holding the die plate, the before 1 mentioned stamp being of the well known construction of hand stamps of this character which are now in use. Many of these hand stamps of the aforesaid construction are found to be'very disadvantageous in that a in the operation of the die plate holder the same is not always completely reversed, which results in a blur upon the paper and to overcome this and to insure a perfect and clear impression I provide means which will positively reverse the die plate holder and thereby hold the same in such a position as to hold the die plate in perfect parallelism to the paper when making an impression, or to the inking pad when coming in contact with the same. This improve ment consists of a shaft 10 which is connected to the depending arms of the movable frame E and which has rigidly secured thereto the die plate holder F. This shaft 10 is adapted to reciprocate within a vertically extending elongated slot 11, the central portion 12 of which is elliptical in shape through the enlargement of the slot at each side wall defining the same, for a purpose which will be hereinafter specified.
Eccentrically mounted on the shaft between the arm of the movable frame and the arm of the stationary frame is a disk 13. This eccentric disk is adapted to slide within and on cam faces or tracks provided as by means of the cam or deflected guide rails 14 mounted on each side and adjacent the slot 11. It will be readily seen from the drawing that due to their cam shape, these guides are parallel at their upper and lower extremities but the central portion is off-set whereby when the disk 13 slides between and travels on these guides, the shaft 10 will make a complete half turn upon the downward stroke of the movable frame member, thereby causing the die plate to reverse and become parallel with the paper and upon the reverse movement of the movable frame the disk 13 will rotate in the opposite direction thereby reversing the operation of the die plate holder and causing theltype to come in contact with the inking par.
I have found that in the operation of a stamp with the attachment as before described, that the guides have become worn and would tend to allow the same to not completely reverse and thus a blur might result and so I have provided a block 15 which is rigidly secured to the shaft 10 and is adapted to slide within the slot 11 formed in one arm of the stationary frame. This block 15 is substantially elliptical in shape and is of approximately the same width as the upper and lower portions of the slot 11, but the central portion 12 of the slot is of greater width than the length of this block. It is obvious that upon the downward movement of the movable frame the disk 13 is first held in the position illustrated by 1 in Fig. 5 of the drawings and when the disk 13 comes within the center of the guides 14, the block 15 will turn within the enlarged portion 12 of the slot, thereby holding the disk member in a position as shown at 1, as also clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. But when the disk 13 enters the lower eX- tremity of the guides, the block 15 has made a complete turn and will enter the lower por tion of the slot 11 thereby firmly holding the die plate holder in a position parallel to the paper as illustrated by 1'. It will be further plainly understood that upon the reverse movement of the movable frame the block will reverse again within the enlarged portion 12 through the instrumentality of the disk 13, thereby causing the die plate holder to turn in a reverse direction and when the block enters within the upper portion of the slot 11 the die plate holder will be held parallel to the inking pad. It is obvious from continuing the before mentioned operation that the die plate will be held parallel either to the pad, or to the paper which is to be stamped, and also insure a complete and clear impression upon the paper.
To facilitate the upward movement of the movable frame the usual coil spring G is provided which is mounted between the transverse portion of the movable frame and a nut 16 which is mounted on the guide rod C.
Another important feature of this invention is that I provide means whereby the ink pad may be easily and readily removed from the guide rod when the same has be come worn and a new one is desired to be put in its place. This improved detachable means consists of a recess 17 formed in the upper face of an ink pad holder which extends from the outer side thereof to approximately the center and the upper face thereof is covered by a plate 18 which has formed therein a slot 19. The lower extremity of the guide rod C is provided with a disk 20 and also has threads mounted thereupon by which the nut 16 may be screwed upon said threads. It is obvious that when the disk 20 formed on the lower extremity of the guide rod is inserted into the slot 17 formed within the ink pad holder, the nut 16 may be screwed down tightly upon the plate 18, thereby firmly gripping the ink pad holder and it will be readily understood that by reversing this operation the pad holder may be easily removed, whereby new ink may be applied to the pad, or a new pad may be inserted as desired.
It is obvious from the foregoing descrip tion that I have constructed attachments for hand stamps as described, which will guide and steady the movement of the die plate holder and render the machine as a whole stronger and firmer in operation. It is to be further understood that other minor details of construction may be resorted to that come within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hand stamp, the combination with a stationary frame, having a guide rod mounted thereon, a pad detachably secured to said guide rod, a movable frame, a die plate holder mounted on said movable frame and a coil spring for the purpose specified mounted intermediate said movable frame and said stationary frame, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary member, a movable member, turnable die means carried by said movable member, said stationary member provided with an elongated slot, said die means having a shaft extending into said slot, said slot having an enlargement, a block on said shaft extending into said slot, a disk member eccentrically mounted on said shaft, and said stationary member provided with a face engaged. by said disk and on which said disk moves.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary member, a movable member, a shaft mounted in said movable member, a die plate holder secured to said shaft, a disk mounted eccentrically on said shaft, guides mounted on said stationary member, said disk adapted to oper ate between said guides for rotating said shaft, substantially as described.
4:. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary member, a movable member, turnable die means carried by said movable member, said stationary member provided with an elongated slot having an enlargement intermediate its ends, said die means having a shaft extending into said slot, a block on said shaft extending into said slot, a disk eccentrically mounted on said shaft, and said stationary member provided with a cam face on which said disk moves.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary member, a movable member, turnable die means carried by said movable member, said stationary member provided with an elongated slot having an enlargement intermediate its ends, said die means having a shaft extending through said slot, a block on said shaft extending into said slot, a disk eccentrically mounted on said shaft, and a guide member mounted exteriorly of said stationary member provided with'a cam face on which said disk moves.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary member having a vertically extending slot formed therein, the central portion of said slot be ing enlarged and substantially elliptical in shape, guides mounted on said stationary member adjacent each side of said slot, a movable member, a shaft carried by said movable member, a die plate mounted on said shaft, a substantially elliptical shaped block mounted within said slot, a disk eccentrically mounted on said shaft and adapted to operate intermediate said guides whereby upon reciprocating said movable member said block will be rotated substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a device of the character described,
a hand stamp comprising a stationary frame having a movable member in complementary relation therewith, a die plate holder supported by said movable frame, said stationary member provided with a pair of vertically extending slots in the sides thereof, shaft projections extending from said die plate holder and into said slots, an eccentric disk provided upon one of said shaft projections, guide means formed upon said stationary members for receiving said eccentric disk whereby said die plate holder may be reversed through the action of said movable frame and means carried upon one of said shaft projections and operating Within one of said slots for limiting the rotation of said die plate holder as and for the purpose set forth and described.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary member, a movable member, turnable die means carried by said movable member having a shaft, a block on said shaft, said stationary member having an elongated slot in which said block moves, a disk mounted on said shaft, said stationary member provided with a face beyond said slot, and said disk provided with a face engaging the said face of the stationary member, one of said faces being' a cam face.
