Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 191-1.
Application filed May 23 19 12..- Serial No. 699,810.
Toattaclmm it may concern,
Be it lcnown that I, MARTINI. I'IAN SEN, a citizen of the 'Unitcd States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Ties, of which the following is .aspecification.
This invention relates to railway ties, andcontemplates the provision of a tie for yieldingly supporting the. rails, the said tie being formed in sections, one telescoping within the other, and thesaid sections having an interposed cushion in the form of a springwhereby they are yieldingly connected in order thatthe upper section may move in relation to the base or lower sec tion.
An object of my invention is to provide a the of the above-mentionedcharacter in which means are-provided for limitingthe upper movement of the upper section in relation to the'base or lower sect-ion.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
' In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying .drawings wherein like characters denote like 'or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 IS a cross sectional view,
taken on line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a per spective view of a detail. -Fig. 5 is a detailed view.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the base or lower section of the tie which is open at its top and has projecting thercinto and from the bottom thereof, studs 2, which studs receive the coil springs 3 and st, as is obvious, for the purpose of supporting an upper section The upper section is substantially elongated and has side portions bent downwardly at rightangles to the body portion as shown at 6, the said sides being adapted to engage the outer sides of the lower section whereby the two sections are held in telescopic engagement with each -members 15 to the uppersection.
other. Lugs 7 also project from the up.- per section and receive coil springs 3 and 4 so as to prevent their lateral movement.
For purpose of limiting the upper movement of the upper section, members 8 are provided, which members are provided with spaced apart apertures 9 for reception of reinforcing-rods 10 and have their upper and lower edges bent inwardly at right angles to the body portion as shown at ll for engagement with the under side of the lower section and upper side of the upper sectiom- Here it is readily obvious that the sec tions-are disposed in telescopic engagement with -each other and that the upper section is normally held in engagement with the upper inturned end of the member Sthrough the medium of the coil springs 3 and 4.
To provide .meansfor fastening the rails 12 to the upper sections grooves or notches 13 are provided'in the section, which cut out portions are adapted to receive the depending lips 14 of thefastening member 15.
on upwardly extending extensions 16, which are adapted to engage the base flange of the rails inthe manner clearly illustrated in the drawings. Any suitable securing means may be provided for fastening the However, in the drawings I have shown ordinary bolts-17,
It will be readily appreciated that the tie that I have disclosed herein can be manufactured at a very small cost, and that the same is very simple in construction, consists of but a few parts, thereby making its utility obvious.
I desire the greatest of Si'luSS to be laid upon the simplicity of my invention, and it is thoughtthat the advantages and novel features of the same will be readily appreciated from the foregoing disclosure.
I desire-it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoinod claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosscure by Letters Patent is I 1. In a device of the character described. a rail tie comprising SECiIODQi-li'tilOWEl .The fastening membershave formed theresaid sections being open at top, the
upper section having its sides bent downwardly for engagementwith the sides of i the lower section, 'studs projecting from the base of the lower section, lugs depending from the uppersection, coil "springs d sposed aboutsaidstuds and said lugs where- 'by the upper section is held in its upper-- most position, clamps engaging the-under side of the lowersection and the upper side of the upper section whereby theupward movement of the upper section is limited,
means extendinglongitudinally through said lower sect-ion for securing said clamps inplace, and rail securing means carried by the upper of said sections for the purpose comht patent may lie qbtained tor five cents eaeh iby addressing the Commissioner of Ia ten,

upper section having its sides bent down wardly to overlap. the sides'of the said lower section, the said upper section havstuds projecting upwardly from the base of said lower section, lugs depending'from the said upper section, springs disposed about said lugs and said studs for normally holdc1ampin members'having their upper and lower 'e ges bent at right angles, said bent .nall'y hroug'hout the length of said lower members in place; and rail securing means mounted, up nth'e-said upper section of the said'notches', as for the purpose set forth.
