SETH L. OOLE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 108,331, dated October 18, 1870; antcdated October 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FORMING CIGAR-TIPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters retain. and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, SETH L. COLE, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, haveinvented certain novel and useful Device for Formingfthe Conical or Tip-end of a Cigar by Machinery; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification. I
In order that the public may fully understand the nature ofmy said invention, and to enable those who are skilled in the art of cigar-making to construct and operate the same, I will describe it as follows, to wit:
Figure .1 is a perspective drawing of a cigar-machine having my invention attached thereto, which consists of two flexible circular pieces of woven fabric,
felt, leather, India rubber, (or a composition thcreofi) provided with holes through the center thereof to receive the upper end of the axis or standard B, upon which these flexible diaphragms A and A revolve by the rotary motion of the cigar, or by a separate geariug, arranged to operate the flexible diaphragms A and A, whether of cloth, leather, felt, or India rubber, which may be vertically, obliquely, or horizontally arranged to receive and form the tip of the cigar, whilef the body thereof is held between the ibrming rollcrs 1 2 and 1' 2, while in motion, for the purpose of wrapping the same, as well as molding the cigar into shape.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the machine, having the table '1 removed in order to more clearly illustrate the lower flexible cloth diaphragm A, the upper rollers 1 2 having been thrown back ready to place a cigar in the machine preparatory to shaping and wrapping the cigar into a perfect form, ready for a smoking.
cloth or either of the above fabrics, or a combination thereof. I am enabled to preserve the wrapper and to regulate the lap thereof toa final completion of the tip in such a manner that the cigar cannot be wound too tightly, so as to prevent its smoking freely, which, I believe, is not the case with either of the metallic devices employed for such purposes, as all of which have a tendency to crack or otherwise destroy the wrapper.
Therefore, the novelty of the improvement consists in flexible diaphrams A and A, made of either woven cloth, felt, leather, India rubber, (or of a composition thereof,) arranged upon an adjustable axis in such a manner that the required Iap and direction of the spiral wrapper is produced in a uniform and workmanlike manner; therefore What I claim as my improvement, and what I wish to secure by LcttersPatent of'the United States, is-- The flexible diaphragms A and A, standard or axis B, with adjustable set-screws and slots .9 s, all constructed, arranged, and operating with the other parts of a cigar-machine, in the manner and for the purpose set forth,
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
S. L. COLE,
Witnesses:
James P. MCLEAN,
J ours It. MCLEAN.
