PATENT OFFICE.-

ROOF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Patented Dec; 30, 1913'.
Application led October 18, .1911. -Ser'ia1No. 655,366. t
To 11520710722 it may cont-cm Be it known tliatPI, RICHARD W'Enn BUR- Ni-:r'n residing at the city of Montreal` Provl .I V iiice ot Quebec Dominion of Canada, have invented 4certain new and useful Improvements iii Roofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a liill, clear7 aiid'exact description thereof. i
My invention relatesparticularly to car roots and it has for its object to provide a self-sustaining water-tight roof suitable for all types of ears.
The invention nia v be said to consist of roof platescoinbined with external carliiies and means tor connecting the plates to thecarlines in a manner to dispense with the usual ridge-pole,r purliiis, sheathing and other roof carrying parts.A For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference iniist be had Atothe accompanying drawings forniiiigapart of this specification in which similar reference'characters indicate the saine parts, and'wherein:
Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a ear roof constructed' according `to my invention; Fig. 2 is aside elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is' a longitudinal-vertical sectional viewA taken on line jA Fig.1; Fig. lis a similar view to Fig. 3, the view being taken on ,line A A Fig. l; Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken online C-C Fig. 1; and Fig. -G Yis an enlarged detail transverse vertical sectional vien7 of the side edge of the roof.
In the preferred embodiment of my in-'g vention the roof plates consist of flanged corrugated vsheets 2; the carliiies extend from' side to side of the ear roof and consistof relatively heavier steel plates-3 .bent to inverted U-form with flanged edges 4; and the means for fastening the roof-plates to these carlines consist of a series of. sheet steel clips 5 riveted at one end to the underside. of the' flanges of the carlines and bentI back' upon themselves to inclose and support the flanged edges.l indicated at 10, ofthe roofplates. This arrangement places' the carli'ncs above the roof-plates.
The roof is'preferably arched and connected to the Z-bars 20 forming the top plates of the side framing of the'car by. bending down the' ends of the carlines proper and roof-plates and riveting or otherwise fastening them. to such Z-bars.
The manner of assembling the members of 'side edges, .a device for supportiii -legs of the clips '5, relatively totheearline` are first bent and riveted 'to the flanges of the cai-line, the inner legs remaining straight. The. flanged edges of the roof plates are inserted' into theclips, the inner legs of which are bent oven-thus completing the roof. Owing to the particular constructioii ol the carliiies in conjunction with the flanges and 'corriigatioiis ofthe roofplates, the roof thus formed has flexibility andstrength while allowing comparatively light-iveiglit roof'sheets to b e used. The -flanges of thecarlines are recessed as at' 22 to accommodate the .clips and bring their under surfaces.. flush with 'the under, surfaces of the flanges.
I fasten tlie-ri'iiiiiing 'boards 25 in place by brackets 2G of channel' forni and spaced a distance apart equal to Athe'width of the ruiiiiingboard, a saddle for the boards bcing presented by a strip 27 .of angle-iron' cut awayat its ends to'fit over the brackets to which it is riveted,' and a strap 29 covering the abutting'ends off the boards has its ends .30 bent down'over the brackets and beneath the saiiie-\vhere lthey are riveted. These ruiming boards 25 preferably eoiisist surfaces rougheiied to provide a. secure foothold, and their ends are supported by brackets 31- fixed upon the ends 0f the car.
Among other advantages besides lightness of constructiointhe roof-plates are' sustained entirely by the exterior carlines and are not punctured at any point, the ,result is that'complete clearance is obtained beneath thel roof, and leakage is prevented.
It desired the ruiming board maybe made of siifliciently heavymaterial to enable the angle-iron strip and retaining `strap Vto be dispensed with, the-board being in that .case riveted directly to the brackets, without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion.
1. 'The combination with a'c'ar body, .of a metal roof comprising flanged cai-lines of inverted U-form, roof sheets'having flanged flaiigededges ofthe roof sheets within the carlines, comprising al part secured to one leg of the U-.form earli1ie,"and apart supported by said securedlpartand supporting an edge of the roof'sheet. l
2. The combination with a car body, of a metal roof coi'nprisingsheet met-al earlines my improved roof is as follows: The outer of inverted U-.orm with llaiigededges, roof of shallow steel channels having their tread the.
'metal roof comprising oarlines of inverted U-form with langed edges, root' sheets with :inwardly langed edges einv'eloped .by the Garlines, and means for suspending the flanged edges of the roof sheets from the cai-lines, Comprising a returnbent angularmexnber having one nortion secured to the flanged edge oi the Carlino, the other' end of said securing member extending,r beneath a portion of the roof sheet.-
'4'. The'combinationwith a our body, of a metal roof comprising carlines of inverted A'll-.form with flanged edges= roof:- sheets with upwardly flanged edges enveloped by the carlines, and means for suspending said roof sheets from the earlines, comprising a ineinber secured' to the flanged edges of the car- `lines, said member having a U-shaped port-ion ext-endingl within. the channel of the enrline. and envelopix f 'the nimex'dg-uxtendng )flange of the roof eet, :1nd a laterally-extending poiti ,-n` extending lfeneailh 'the flanged edge of 'the roof sheet.
5. The combination with a ear body, of a metal' roof comprising earlines of inverted UA-forin with flanged edges, roof sheets with 'upwardly flanged edges enveloped by the earlines, and means for suspending the :roof sheets from the carlines, secured to the flanged edges thereof above the plane of the ina-in portion of the roof sheet, said securing means having a supporting portion extending` below the plane of the roof sheets.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name( to tl'iis'speciioation in the presence of two witnesses.
