To all whom may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN C. STnrxnnnucn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mandan, in the county of Morton and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful improvements in Packing-Rings, of

This invention relates to improvements in packing rings and has particular application to what might be termed a compensat ing packing ring. I
in carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a packing ring which will'be found especially useful in conjunction with piston rods and the like for effecting a fluid tight joint. between the cylinder and the rod and which will be con-- structed in such manner that any wear on the ring will be automatically taken up or compensated fort-hereby preserving the life and efiiciency of the ring as an entirety.
It is also my purpose to provide a packing ring" which will embody in its construction a number of sets of curved strips disposed in ring or circular formation and arranged or correlated in suchmanner as to be capable of relative movement in the event of wear on the ring whereby the life of the ring will be preserved and the efficiency of the joint maintained.
Furthermore, I aim. to provide a compeneating packing ring which will, embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability and which may be readily assembled and disassembled for application and removal and wherein the component parts will be arranged in such relation as to automatically take up any wear.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangementof parts hereinafter setforth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of a packing ring constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the ring. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modified form of ring, and Fig. 4- is a cross sectional view through the form of ring illustrated. in Fig. 3.

From the above description and various forms of the invention delineated on the drawing, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my improved packing ring will be readily apparent. It will be seen that I have provided a packingring whereby wear on the parts thereof is automatically taken up or compensated for, while the rim may be readily assembled and disassemble v While I have herein shown and described certain preferred forms of my invention by way of illustration, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the forms of my linvention herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim without departing'from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A packing ring comprising a set of curved strips disposed in circular formation, overlapping lugs formed on the inner side of each strip and each having the opposite ends thereof cut out to form a straight edge contiguous the inner face of the respective strip and downwardly and outwardly inclined edgecontiguous such straight edge, a second set of curved strips disposed between the first-mentioned strip and overlapped thereby, tongues projecting outwardly from the opposite ends of the last-mentioned strips and disposed in parallel planes and each forming with the respective end of the strip a shoulder and lying in face to face contact with the projecting ends of the adjacent lug on said first strip, and means surrounding said strips whereby the same may be moved relatively to one another to contract the ring.
