To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JULiUs HAMAGHECK, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, and a resident of Two Rivers,1`1n the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanding machines.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a sanding machine adapted for sanding both the upper and lower sides of Work passing through the machine at a single operation, so constructed and arranged that the frame of the machine may be quickly and conveniently opened to eX- pose and give access to the inclosed operative parts of the machine, as, for example, to the sandingdrums, feed rolls, and the like, and again restored to operative condition, preferably without disturbing or affecting the relation and adjustment of the various operative parts of the machine.
A' further object of the invent-ion is to provide a sanding machine of this general type comprising a section on which one sanding drum or set of sanding drums and one set of feed rolls and drum oscillating devices are mounted and which is adjustable toward and from the other section of the bed or frame o-n which the other sanding drum or set of sanding drums,- feed rolls and drum oscillating devices are mounted,
and which is fixed, thus providing for ad-V justing the machine for operating on work of different size or thickness; together with means for quickly and conveniently effecting adjustment of said adjustable section of the bed or frame of the machine.
A further object of the invention, particularly where more than one sanding drum is utilized for sanding each side of the work, is to provide means for quickly and conveniently adjusting the sanding drums of each set bodily both separately and together and also to provide means for adjusting opl posite ends o-f diderent sanding drums separately.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a driving mechanism for the feed rolls and oscillating devices for the sanding drums mounted on different sections of the bed or frame of the machine, which shall be in continuous train regardless of the adjusted position of the adjustable section of said bed or frame and which will be unaffected by the movement of said movable section in opening and closing the same to give access to the parts of the machine inclosed thereby, as stated, whereby said feed rolls and drum oscillating devices may be driven from a single power transmitting medium, as a usual driving pulley, preferably mounted on the fXed section of the bed or frame of the machine.
To effect these various objects, a sanding machine of my invention comprises the various features, combinations of features and details of construct-ion hereinafter described and claimed.
` In the accompanying drawings, in which my invention is fully illustrated, Figure 1 is a. top plan view of my improved sanding machine. Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations of opposite sides of the machine, which will hereinafter be referred to, respectively, as the right and left hand sides thereof. Figs. l, 5 and 6 are transverse sectional elevations on the lines 4 1, 5 5, and (3*6, respectively, of Fig. 53. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional elevation on the line 7--7 of Fig. 1'; and Fig. S is a view similar to Fig. 7, showing the top section partly raised or opened to expose the parts of the machine inclosed thereby.
The frame of my improved machine comprises a lower section, designated as a whole by A, and an upper section, designated as a whole by B, supported upon said lower section, as presently described, so as to be bodily adjustable relatively thereto, and which may also be raised to expose the parts inclosed thereby. The lower frame section A consists of side plates A1 preferably made of cast iron, consisting of substantially continuous webs and marginal flanges thereon. Between their ends, the side plates of the -achine are connected by a transverse web a and at their ends are rigidly connected by plates o1 and o2 bolted thereto. frame section B of the Amachine likewise consists of side plates B1 comprising substantially continuousweb portions and marginal flanges thereon, said side plates being connected between their ends by a transverse web c and at their ends by plates b1, b2, bolted thereto, being substantially like t-he lower frame section A.
My improved machine comprises sanding The upper drums and feed rolls rotatably mounted in suitable bearings in both of the frame sections A and B. The feed rolls in the upper .frame section B are located directly above the feed rolls in the lower frame section A,so that said rolls will grip the work presented to them and feed it through the machine, and the sanding drums mounted in different sections of the machine frame are adapted to sand opposite sides of the work as it is fed thro-ugh the machine by said feed rolls, the sanding drum or drums mounted in the lower frame section acting on the under side of the work and the sanding drum or drums mounted in t-he upper frame section on the upper side of the work.
To effect the object of the invention as it relates to rendering the machine adjustable, and to opening the machine frame so as to render the parts inclosed thereby accessible, the construction of my machine is as follcws: Slidably fitted to suitable upright bearings formed in the upper frame section B, one at ea'h corner thereof, are rods l, 2, 3 and 4. Formed at the lower ends of the rods 1 and 2 at the front end of the machine, are feet 5, which, when the upper frame section B is in closed or operative position, rest upon rigid abutments on the lower frame section A consisting, as shown, of brackets 6 one on each side of said lower frame section and preferably formed integral therewith. The front end of said upper frame section is adapted to be secured in closed or operative position by means of bolts 7 piv oted in grooves or recesses 8 formed in said brackets and adapted to engage registering slots 9 formed in the front ends of the feet 5 on the lower ends of the rods 1 and 2. Threaded to the free ends of the bolts 7 and adapted to bear upon the upper sides of said feet when said bolts are turned into engagement with the slots 9 therein, are clamping nuts l0.
The rear end of the upper frame section B is pivotally connected to the lower frame section A in the following manner: Formed at thelower ends of the supporting rods 3 and 4 at the rear end of the machine, are eyes 11 which engage suitable pivot supports on the lower frame section A, as shown, the projecting ends of bearing bushings 12 and 13. As shown, said eyes 11 consist of separate` rings or collars pinned or otherwise rigidly secured to the lower ends of said rods 3 and 4. The upper ends of the supporting rods l, 2, 3 and 4 are screw threaded and secured in screw threaded engagement therewith, respectively, are nuts 14, l5, 16 and 17, which are confined against endwise movement between separated sections of the bearings for said supporting rods l, 2, 3 and 4, said bearings being provided with removable caps to provide for assembling the parts. Formed on or rigidly secured to said nuts,
are bevel gears 18 which intermesh with pinions 19 secured to rotate with shafts 20 and 21 which extend transversely of the machine and are rotatably mounted in suitable bearings in themachine frame. Rotation is adapted to be imparted to the pinion shafts 20 and 21 by means of a shaft 22 secured yon which are worms 23 which engage worm gears 24 secured to said pinion shafts 20 and 21. The worm shaft 22 is adapted to be manually operated by means of a hand wheel 25 on the front end thereof. `With the described construction, it is obvious that the nuts 14 and 16 on the rods 1 and 3 Yand the nuts 15 and 17 on the rods 2 and 4, which are located on opposite sides of the machine, will be turned in opposite directions by rotation of the worm shaft 22 and in order that rotation of said worm shafts may screw said nuts u and down on the rods which they respectively engage, simultaneously, the screw threads on the rods and nuts located on opposite sides of the machine are opposite in lead, but of the same pitch. As shown, the threads on the rods 1 and 3 are right hand threads, and those on the rods 2 and 4 are left hand threads. Thus, by turning the hand wheel 25 in one direction or the other,
it is obvious that the upper frame section B for very fine adjustment of the upper frame section. Thus by properly graduating said hand wheel 25, any desired lineness of adjustment of said upper frame section may be secured and indicated. Also, in order to provide for adjusting the position of the upper frame section B to a position of parallelism with the lower frame section A, provision is made for disconnecting the different nuts 14, 15, 16 and 17 so that they may be turned separately. As shown, this is effected by making the pinion shafts 20 4and 21 and the worm shaft 22 in separate sections and connecting them by a couplingV comprising members which admit of being joined in different angular positions, said couplings consisting, as shown, ofV disks secured to the adjacent ends of said shaft sections, respectively, which are adapted -to be bolted or otherwise rigidly secured together, To provide for adjusting the upper frame section B accurately with relation to the lower frame section A, each set of coupling disks 26 is preferably connected by a plurality of securing bolts positioned at uniform angular distances from each other so that by turning said coupling disks relatively to each other a distance equal to the angular distance between adjacent holes, or
a multiple of such distances, the bolt holes in said coupling disks will register with each other, thus providing for recoupling the shaftsections in any desired adjusted positions.
Tith the described construction, it is obvious that by disconnecting the securing bolts 7 from the feet 5 at the lower ends of the support- ing rods 1 and 2, the front end of the machine may be swung upwardly about the bushings 12 and 13 as pivots to expose the parts of the machine inclosed within the machine frame, a suitable hoist or tackle, not necessary to be shown, being preferably provided for this purpose; also that the upperfraine section B may be conveniently adjusted into Va posit-ion of parallelism with the lower frame section A; and that, when so adjusted and the coupling disks connected, said upper frame section may be raised and lowered bodily by turning the hand wheel 25 to secure any desired afljustment thereof above the lower frame section A.
In the preferable construction shown, the machine comprises four sanding drums, two, designated 27 and 28, rotatably mounted in the lower frame section A, and two, designated 29 and 30, rotatably mounted in the upper frame section B. My invention contemplates the use of any desired or approved form of sanding drums, said drums bein preferably made of cast iron and the sand paper being secured directly to the rigid, unyielding surfaces thereof. Speaking generally, the front sanding drums 27 and 29 of each set are designed for the heavy duty of sizing the work passing through the machine to thickness, and are therefore covered with relatively coarse sandpaper, the rear rolls 28 and 30 of each set being designed mo-re particularly for smoothing and finishing the work and being covered with relatively iine sand paper.
Secured in the under surface of the upper frame section B directly above the lower sanding drums 27 and 28, are gage plates 31 and 32, and secured in the upper surface of the lower frame section A, directly below the sanding drums 29 and 30, are gage plates 33 and 34. Said gage plates are preferably made of very hard material, as high speed steel, and project slightly above the surfaces in which they are secured, respectively, the front edges thereof being preferably inclined or beveled so that the work will ride over the same without catching.
rfhe sanding drums mounted in the different frame sections are adapted to be adjusted toward and from their respective gage plates either separately or together, in the following mannerrhormed on the bearingl boxes 35 of the sanding drum shafts are parallel straight sides 3G which are fitted to slotted openings 37 formed in the side plates of the machine frame, said slotted openings being longer vertically than the-corresponding dimension of said bearing boxes. Secured in suitable holes or bearings formed in the side plates of the machine frame, so as to be movable lengthwise therein, are rods 38, see particularly Fig. 5, an end of each of which is secured to a bearing box 35. The outer ends of said rods 38 are screw threaded and threaded thereto are nuts 39 which are confined against longitudinal movement between rigid parts of the machine frame. Formed on said nuts 39 are worm gears 40 with which intermesh worms 41 secured to rotate with shafts 42 which extend transversely of the machine and are rotatably mounted in suitable bearings on the machine frame. As shown, the worm gears threaded to the rods secured to the bearing boxes for each sanding drum shaft, are thus connected in pairs. As shown, said worm shafts 42 extend through their bearings and project beyond the same at one side of the machine, 'as shown, the left side, the projecting ends thereof being squared to provide for engaging a wrench therewith. As shown, also, the worm shafts for adjusting the sanding drums in the different frame sections are connected by gears, vso that rotation of one thereof will impart corresponding rotation to the other. The gearing which connects the worm shafts 42 in the upper frame section B, comprises gears 43 and 44 secured to said worm shafts, respectively, and intermediate idle gears 45 and 46 rotatably mounted on suitable studs secured in the machine frame. W'ith the described construction, when said gears are in train, rotation of either of said worm shafts 42 will operate to impart rotation to the other, but in the opposite direction. The worms on said shafts being applied to their respective gears on relatively opposite sides thereof, in order to adjust said sanding drums 29 and 30 simultaneously in the same direction, it is necessary that the screw threads on the rods 38 applied to said rolls respectively, shall have the same lead, that is, both right hand or both left hand. Also, in order to provide for adjusting said sanding' drums separately, means are provided for throwing the gears connecting said worm shafts 42 out of train. As shown, this is elected in a simple manner by making the stud on which one of the idle gears, as shown the idle gear 45, is mounted, of sufficient length to provide for moving said idle gear 45 endwise on said stud outof engagement with the gears 43 and 46. A cotterl pin 47 which is interchangeable in suitable holes in the stud on which said gear is mounted, is adapted to secure said gear in train and to retain said gear on its stud when out of train.
The worm shaft 42 forming part of the llO adjusting devices for the sanding drums mounted in the lower frame section A, are connected4 by gears comprising gears 48 and 49 secured to said shafts and an intermediate idle gear 50 mounted on a stud, which is preferably of sufficient length to permit said idle gear to be withdrawn out of train with said gears 48 and 49. As the worms on the lower worm shafts 42 engage their respective worm Igears on the same relat-ive sides and, as rotation of either of said worm shafts will impart rotation to the other in the same direction, the screw threads on all of the rods 38 applied to the bearing boxes of the lower sanding drums, are of the same lead. To provide for adjusting the opposite ends of the different sanding drums separately, the worm shafts 42 are preferably made in separate sections joined by adjustable couplings substantially ident-ical with the couplings which connect different sections of the pinion shafts 20 and 21 and the worm shaft 2.2.
With the described construction, it is obvious that the sanding drums mounted in different frame sections may be adjusted bodily either separately or together, and that opposite ends of the different sanding drums may be adjusted separately to bring said drums into desired relation to the work.
Rotation is adapted to be imparted to the sanding drums from a. eountershaft, not shown, by means of belts adjusted to suitable driving pulleys secure'd to the ends of the sanding drum shafts which project through and beyond the sides of the machine frame, the driving pulleys for the sanding drums mounted in different frame sections being positioned on opposite sides of the machine in order that the driving belts adjusted thereto, respective-ly, may not interfere with each other. As shown, the driving pulleys for the sanding drums mounted in the lower frame section A are secured to the ends of the sanding shafts which project at the right hand side of said lower frame section A, and comprise pulleys 5l and 52 secured to the sanding drum shafts and an intermediate idle pulley 53 mounted on a fixed stud secured in the machine frame around which the drivin@ belt 54 passes between the pulleys 5l andJ 52; and the driving pulleys for the sanding drums mounted in the upper frame section B are secured to the ends of the sanding drum shaft which project at the left side of the machine frame and comprise pulleys and 56 secured to said sanding drum shafts, and an idle pulley 57 mounted on a fixed stud secured in the machine fram-e around which the driving belt 5S passes between the pulleys 55 and 56.
Usual endwise oscillation is imparted to the sanding drums in operation, by means of suitable devices applied to the ends of the sanding drinn shafts opposite to the ends in suitable bearings on the right hand side v of said upper frame section.
` As shown, the oscillating connection between the shaft 59 and the lower sandino drum shafts consists of sleeves 61 provided with suitable bearings fitted to said sanding drum shafts and which are secured against longitudinal ino-vement relatively to said shafts by means of collars 62 and 63 secured" to said sanding drum shafts on opposite sides of said sleeves, respectively, and which closely embrace said sleeves. Said sleeves 61 are extended downwardly and formed therein are slots 64 fitted to which are blocks 65 provided with bearings G6 fitted to which are eccentrics 67 on the shaft 59. The sides of the slots 64 closely embrace the sides of the blocks 65 and said slots are made of proper length to accommodate the throw of the eccentrics G7. The sleeves G1 are secured against rotation with the sanding drum shafts between the ends of one of the bearings for the shaft 59 and collars G8 secured to said shaft 59. Y
As shown, the oscillating connection between the shaft 60 and the upper sanding drum shafts consists of sleeves or collars 69 provided with suitable bearings for said sanding drum shafts and which are secured against lengthwise movement relatively to said shafts by means of collars 70 and 71 secured to said sanding drum shafts one on each side of said sleeves or collars and which closely embrace the same. Pivoted between their ends to suitable brackets on said upper frame section B, are levers 72 formed at the lower ends of which are yokes 73 which embrace the sleeves or collars 69 and secured in the ends of said yolres are pins which engage holes in said sleeves or collars. Formed en the upper ends of said levers 72 are heads 7G which are provided with rectangular bearings 77 slidably fitted to which are blocks 78 provided with bearings 7 9 fit-ted to which are eccentrics 80 on the shaft 60. The blocks 78 are confined in their respective b-earings between the ends of one of the bearings for the shaft 60 and collars 8l secured to said shaft. The rectangular bearings 77 are made of suitable length to accommodate the throw of the eccentrics, and to provide for conveniently assembling the 'parts the outer sides of the bearings 77 are formed by removable plates 82. -The feed rolls comprise upper feed rolls 83 mounted in the upper frame sect-ion B, and lower feed rolls 84 mounted in the lower frame section vA, the
feed rolls in said upperand lower sections being arranged in` pairs, the feed rolls 83 direct-ly above the feed rolls 84. As shown, said feed rolls comprise live pairs.
To provide for conveniently engaging the work in the front pair of feed rolls, said feed rolls are preferably of the type known as cushion rolls, the portions thereof which engage the work being yieldingly supported. My invention contemplates the use of any desired or approved form of such cushion feed rolls, of which several diderentkinds are inv general use. Said cushion rolls `need not, therefore, be described in det-ail. The remaining feed rolls are preferably solid and rigid.
To provide for adjusting the feed rolls, they are supported in the following manner: The bearings for the feed roll shafts are formed in boxes 85which are provided on opposite sides, preferably about midway between their ends, with parallel bearing surfaces 86 which are iitted to slotted bearings 87 formed in the upper and lower frame sections so as to be freely movable therein in such manner that the feed rolls of each pair will be adjustable toward and from each other.
The bearing boxes for the upper feed rolls are adjustably supported in the following manner: Secured in said bearing boxes are rods 88, which extend upwardly through holes formed in the side plates of the upper frame sect-ions B and which project above said side frames. The upper ends of said rods are screw threaded and secured in screw threaded engagement therewith are nuts 89 formed o-n which are upwardly projecting shanks 90 the ends of which are squared to provide for engaging a wrench therewith for turningthe same. Said nuts 89 are confined against movement in the direction of the lengths of said rods between the upper edges of the side plates of the upper frame section B and plates 91 secured to the upper ends of projections formed on the upper edges of said side plates on opposite sides ofthe rods 88, said plates being provided with suitable holes or openings to receive the shanks 90 o-f the nuts 89. Said upper feed rolls are adapted to be secured in adjusted position by means of lock nuts 92 threaded to the shanks 90 of the nuts 89 above the plates 91 and which are adapted to be screwed down firmly against said plates.
The bearing boxes for the lower feed rolls are adjustablv supported, in substantially the same manner as the bearing boxes for the upper feed rolls, by rods 93 secured therein, `which engage holes formed in the side plates of the lower frame section A. Formed in the side plates of said lower frame section A, in such position that the rods 93 will extend into and preferably,
across the same, are holes or openings 95 in which are positioned nuts threaded to the ends of said rods remote from the bearing boxes to which they are connected. As sho-wn, there are two nuts 96 and 97 on each of said rods, of which the lower nut 96 bears against the lower side of the holes 95 and sustain the weight and thrust ofthe feed rolls, the upper nuts 97 being adapted to bear against the upper sides of the holes 95, operating both as lock nuts and to prevent the feed rolls from jumping.
With the described manner of supporting the feed rolls, it is obvious that the rolls of each pair of feed rolls may be adjusted toward and from each other as may be desired.
In the operation of the machine, the ec centric shafts 59 and 60 for oscillating the sanding drums and the feed rolls 83 and 84 are driven in the following manner: Mounted on a fixed stud 98, secured in the lower frame section and projecting laterally therefrom, is a driving pulley 99 which is adapted to be driven from a suitable source of power, preferably a countershaft, not shown, provided with usual tight and loose pulleys, whereby said countershaft and thus the pulley 99 may be conveniently started and stopped as desired. Likewise mounted to rotate freely on said stud 98 and rigidly connected to the pulley 99 so as to rotate therewith, are a bevel gear 100 and a spur gear 101. Said bevel gear 100 meshes with a bevel gear 102 secured to the eccentric shaft 59. rlhe spur gear 101 meshes with a spur gear 103 secured to rotate with a shaft 104 rotatably mounted in suitable bearings in the lower frame section A and which extends transversely across the machine. As shown, the bearings for said shaft 104 are formed in the bushings 12 and 13 to which the rear supporting rods 3 and 4 for the upper frame section B are pivoted, as heretofore described. Mounted in suitable bearings on the right hand side of the upper frame section B, is an upright shaft 105 to which rotation is impart-ed from the shaft 104 by means of intermeshing bevel gears 106, 107 secured to said shafts 104 and 105, respectively, and the eccentric shaft 60 is driven from the shaft 105 by means ofv intermeshing bevel gears 108 and 109 secured to rotate with said shafts 105 and 60, re spectively. As shown, the bearing for the upright shaft 105 is formed directly in a sleeve 110 secured in fixed position in a suitable seat formed on the upper frame section B, said seat being preferably provided with a removable cap or side to provide for conveniently engaging said sleeve 110 therewith. Formed on the lower end of said sleeve 110 is a bracket 111 which is provided with a bearing for the outer end of the transverse shaft 104, which projects through and beyond its bearing in the machine frame.
To provide for vertical adjustment of the upper frame section B, the bevel gear 108 is splined to the shaft 105, said gear being provided with a hub or sleeve 112 fitted to a suitable bearing on said upper frame section so as to rotate freely therein, said sleeve being secured in its bearing by engagement of the gears 108, 109 and a shoulder at the inner end thereof which rests upon the upper end of the bearing for said hub or sleeve. The feed rolls are driven by means of suitable trains of gears comprising spur gears 114 secured to the projecting outer ends of said feed roll shafts and intermediate idle gears 115 mounted on fixed studs secured in the machine frame. In order that they may not interfere with each other, the trains of gears forl driving the upper and lower feed rolls, respectively, are located on opposite sides of the machine. As shown, the driving trains for the lower feed rolls are located on the right hand side of the machine, and the driving train for the upper rolls are located on the left hand side of t-he machine.
The train of gears for driving the lower feed rolls is preferably driven directly from the shaft 104 by means of a pinion 116 thereon and intermediate idle gears 117 and 118 rotatably mounted on studs secured in a bracket 119 on the lower frame section A, of which the gear 11S meshes with the driving gear 114 secured to the shaft of the rearmost lower feed roll. The train of gears for driving the upper feed rolls is driven directly from the shaft 104 through the medium of a pinion 120 secured to said shaft and an intermediate idle gear 121 which meshes with the gear 120 and the gear wheel 114 secured tothe rearmost upper feed roll, said idle gear 121 being mounted on a pivot stud at the knuckle of a toggle joint comprising members 122 and 123, the adjacent ends of which are pivotally connected to each other and the remote ends of which are pivoted to the shaft 104 and to the shaft of the rearmost upper feed roll, respectively. v As shown, the spaces in the adjacent sides of the frame sections A and B between the different feed rolls are closed by plates 124, said plates being removable. Preferably, also, said plates 124 are perforated, thus providing for maintaining a current of air through and across the opening between the frame sections, which will operate to 'carry off all dust and dirt generated in the operation of the machine.
I claim 1. In a sanding machine, the combination of a frame provided with an opening extending lengthwise through the same through which the work is adapted to pass, rigidly supported sanding drums having unyielding sanding surfaces rotatably mounted in said frame above and below said opening, and rigid gage surfaces on said machine frame opposed to said sanding drums, respectively, substantially as described.
2. In a sanding machine, the combination of a frame comprising a lower frame section and an upper frame section supported thereon, said frame sections being separated from each other forming a passage which extends lengthwise through the machine between said frame sections and through which the work is adapted to pass, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, and means connecting said frame sections to permit said upper frame section to be opened in a plane coincident with the passage between said frame sections to render the sanding drums and associated parts accessible, substantially as described.
3. In a sanding machine', the combination of a frame comprising a lower frame section, an upper frame section mounted thereon, sandingl drums rotatably mounted inV said frame sections, respectively, saidv machine frame being provided with an opening which extends lengthwise through the same between the frame sectionsy and through which the work is adapted to pass, means adjustably connect-ing said frame sections constructed and arranged to permit said upper frame section to be opened in a-plane coincident with the opening between said frame sections to render the sanding drums and associated parts accessible, and means for adjusting said upper frame section relatively to said lower frame section, substantially as described.
4. In a sanding machine, the combination of a lower frame section, an upper frame section supported thereon, and Vadjustable toward and from said lower frame section, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, gage surfaces on said frame sections opposed to the sanding drums mounted in the opposite frame sections, respectively, and means for` adjusting said upper frame section relatively to said lower frame section, the means for supporting said upper frame section comprising rods the lower ends of which are adapted to be connected to the lower frame section, said upper frame section being provided with bearings to which said rods are fitted, nuts secured in screw threaded engagement with said rods, and means for securing said nuts in said upper frame section against endwise movement relatively thereto, substantially as described.
5. In a sanding machine, the combination of a lower frame section, an upper frame section supported thereon, and adjustable toward and from said lower frame section, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, gage surfaces on said frame sections opposed to the sanding drums mounted in the opposite frame sections, respectively, means for adjusting said upper frame section relatively to said lower frame section, the means for supporting and adjusting said upper frame sections comprising rods the lower ends of which are adapted to be connected to the lower frame section, said upper frame section being provided with bearings to which said rods are fitted, nuts secured in screw threaded engagement with said rods, means for securing said nuts in said upper frame section against endwise movement relatively thereto, and means for simultaneously turning said nuts, substantially as described.
6. In a sanding machine, the combination of a lower frame section, an upper frame section supported thereon, and adjustable toward and from said lower frame section, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, gage surfaces on said frame sections opposed to the sanding drums mounted in the opposite frame sections, respectively, means for adjusting said upper frame section relatively to said lower frame section, the means for supporting and adjusting said upper frame section comprising rods the upper ends of which are adapted to be connected to the lower frame section, said upper frame section being provided with bearings to which said rods are fitted, nuts secured in screw threaded engagement with said rods, means for securing said nuts in said upper frame section against endwise movement relatively thereto, connection between said nuts whereby they may all be turned together, and means for disconnecting said nuts, whereby they may be turned separately, substantially as described.
7. In a sanding machine, the combination of a lower frame section, an upper frame section supported thereon, and adjustable toward and from said lower frame section, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, gage surfaces on said frame sections opposed to the sanding drums mounted in the opposite frame sections, respectively, means for adjusting said upper frame section relatively to said lower frame section,'the means for supporting and adjusting said upper frame section comprising rods the lower ends of which are adapted to be connected to the lower frame section, said upper frame section being provided with bearings to which said rods are fitted, nuts secured in screw threaded engagement with said rods, means for securing said nuts in said upper frame section against endwise movement relatively thereto, and adjustable means for connecting said nuts, whereby they may be turned together and adjusted separately, substantially as described.
8. ln a sanding machine, the combination of a lower frame section, an upper frame section supported thereon, and adjustable toward and from said lower frame section, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, gage surfaces on said frame sections opposed to the sanding drums mounted in the opposite frame sections, respectively, means for adjusting said upper frame section relatively to said lower frame section, the means for supporting and adjusting said upper frame section comprising rods the lower ends of which are Vadapted to be connected to the lower frame section, said upper frame section being provided with bearings to which said rods are fitted, nuts secured in screw threaded engagement with said rods, means for securing said nuts in said upper frame section against endwise movement relatively thereto, mea-ns for simultaneously turning said nuts, said means comprising gears on said adjusting nuts, pinion shafts, pinions thereon which intermesh with the gears on said nuts, and means for simultaneously rotating said pinion shafts, substantially as described.
9. ln a sanding machine, the combination of a lower frame section, an upper frame section supported thereon, and adjustable toward and from said lower frame section, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, gage surfaces on said frame sections opposed to the sanding drums mounted in the opposite frame sections, respectively, means for adjusting said upper frame section relatively to said lower frame section, the means for supporting and adjusting said upper frame section comprising rods the lower ends of which are adapted to be connected to the lower frame section, said upper frame section being provided with bearings to which said rods are fitted, nuts secured in screw threaded engagement with said rods, means for securing said nuts in said upper frame section against endwise movement relatively thereto, means for simultaneously turning said nuts, said means comprising gears onsaid adjusting nuts, pinion shafts. pinions thereon which intermesh with the gears on said nuts, worms on said pinion shafts, a worm shaft, and worms thereon which intermesh with the worm gears on said pinion shafts, substantially as described.
10. ln a sanding machine` the combination of a lower frame section, an upper frame section supported thereon, and adjustable toward and from said lower frame section, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, gage surfaces on said frame sections opposed to the sanding drums mounted in the opposite frame sections, respectively, means for adjusting said upper frame section relatively to said lower frame section, the means for supporting and adjusting said upper frame section comprising rods the lower ends of which are adapted to be connected to the lower frame section, said upper fraine section being provided with bearings to which said rods are fitted, nuts secured in screw threaded engagement with said rods, means for securing said nuts in said upper frame section against endwise movement relatively thereto, means for simultaneously turning' said nuts, said means comprising gears on 'said adjusting nuts, pinion shafts, pinions frame section mounted thereon, and adjustable means connecting said frame sections comprising a pivotal connection at one end of the machine and a detachable connection at the other end thereof, substantially as dcscribed. v
12. In a sanding machine, the combination of a frame comprising separate upper and lower sections, sanding drums rotatably mounted in said frame sections, respectively, supporting rods for said upper' frame section comprising` rods the lower ends of which are pivotally connected to the' lower frame sections, and rods which are detachably connected to said lower frame section, substantially as described.
