PRESS FOR ENLARGING- HOLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30,1913.
` Application mea May e, 1913. serial No. 765,827.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. BLOUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Noma, in the county of Holmes and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Enlarging Holes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to presses for enlarging the nail-holes in factory-made horse shoes without heating the shoes; and it consists in the novel construction and comb-ination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a press constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the shoe support, drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the shoe support, showing the upright in section.
The press is provided with an upright 2 comprising two parallel side bars, having feet 3 at their lower parts for securing them to the floor, and a stay 4 at their upper parts for connecting them to a wall.
A tubular guide 5 is provided and has a lug 6 on its rear side which is secured between the side bars of the upright. A plunger 7 is slidable in the guide 5, and 8 is a tapering expanding tool which is secured to the plunger.
A fulcrum bracket 9 is secured to the upright below the guide, and 10 is an operating lever which is pivoted to the fulcrum bracket by a pin 12. An arm 14 is pivoted to the top of the upright by a pin 15, and 16 is a connecting-rod provided with pivot pins 17 and arranged between the free end of the arm 14 and the operating lever. A coupling-rod 19 is pivoted to the arm 14 and to the upper end of the plunger by pins Q0. The pivot 'pin of the operating lever is arranged in front of the center line of the coupling-rod and plunger so that the 0perating leverl is able to exert a powerful pressure on the expanding tool;
A support 21 for the horse shoe is provided, and consists of a tubular block having a lug 22 on its rear side which is secured between the side bars of the upright,
and arranged intermediate of the guide and the fulcrum bracket. The front portion of the block 21 has a horizontal slot 23 for receiving the horse shoe, and the front portion of the block above the slot 23 has a vertical slot 24 cut in it, thereby forming a forked stripper 25. The lower portion of the tubular block forms a receptacle for oil, and its bottom end is closed by means of a plug 26 which can be removed from time to time to clean out the oil receptacle.
The horse shoe is inserted in the horizontal slot without being heated, and the expanding tool is forced into the nail holes which require to be enlarged. The tip of the expanding tool descends into the oil in the oil receptacle at each downstroke, so that the tool is kept oiled to a sufficient extent, which is very necessary. The oil lubricates the tapering tool, so that less force is required to operate it, and it also prevents the temper of the tool from being drawn by the heat formed by its frictional contact with the horse shoe. As the tool is oiled by immersion in the oil receptacle at each downstroke, it is always kept well oiled, and the operator does not have to reach for and use an oil can between the strokes of the press. The hand lever is forced upward to pull out the tool from the expanded hole, the horse shoe being prevented from rising by the stripper.
l/Vhat I claim is:
In a press for enlarging holes, the combination, with an upright comprising two parallel side bars, of a tubular work-support formed of a plate having its end portions arranged side by side to form a lug which is secured between the said side bars, said tubular support having a horizontal slot which receives the work and forms 'a stripper, a plug which closes the bottom of the tubular support so that it forms an oil chamber, and an expanding tool arranged over the work-support and provided with means for forcing it through the work and into the oil chamber.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
