T all whom z't'z'ag/ concern Y Be it known that. I, CHRISTOPHER Lon- RANcE ANTON, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Monongahela, in the county of Washington and State. of Pennsylvania,n
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification,,reference.beinghad" to the accompanying-drawings.
- This invention relates to improvements 1n drills, and more particularly to that class ing a socket formed.' therein, a central bitarranged in vthe socket, the central bit projecting outwardly beyond the pairs of bits arranged in theopposite ends of the socket, the central bit being adapted tol start a hole, andthe side bits cutting a hole of the desired diameter. s
A still lfurther object of this invention 1s the provision of a drill comprising a head having a socket formed'therein, the head being also provided with a reduced tubular extension, a .central bit disposed in the socket, and said bits arranged in the opposite ends of the' socket, the -central bit having a reduced threaded extension projecting through the extension of the head, and
a nut threaded on the extremity ofthe extension of the central-'bit to bear against the extremity of the extension ofthe head,
whereby the, several bits are'maint-ained in' positioninthe head.
With these and other objects 1n view, my
i invention consists in the 'novel construction,
combination. and arrangemetof parts, to be hereinafter more fully described,cla1med and illustrated .fin the accompanying drawing,
in which-'- Figure l1 1san elevatlon of my device',
partly in section; Fig. 2 .is an elevation ofthe central bit; Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of thel side bits; and Fig. 4 is an end View; v of the head with the'bits removed.
Referring more particularly to, the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the drillhead Speccation of Letters Patent.

which is provided with a rearwardly projecting tubular extension 6, whereby the head may be secured to any desired construction of drill stock, (not shown). The head 5 is provided with an elongated-bore or socket 7 which communicates at one end with a bore of the tubular extension 6, and the'bore is enlarged laterally and centrally thereof, as at 8 to afford recesses adapt-ed to receive the side faces of a central lcutting bit 9 whereby the same .is maintained against axial movement. The/ reduced extension 6 forms a shoulder`10 at the inner end of the head, and the central bit 9 is provided with la reduced threaded extension 11 which is adapted for engagement in thel bore of the extension 6 and projects therethrpugh. Arranged in the opposite sidesof the socket 7 are side bits 12,'l the inner ends of the bitsl engaging the.shou1 der '10 whereby the inward movement thereof is limited.- The opposite faces of the centralbit 9 are beveled, as at 13, and the inner faces of the bits '12 are beveled as at 14, at their inner ends, the
.beveled surfaces of the bit 9 being adapted toengage the beveledl inner faces of the side bits 12 to maintain them in .the head.
The forward extremitylof' the central -bit is formed with a pair of reversely extendingv vis position withinl cutting teeth' 15, .the teeth projecting beyond the outer yends of the bits'l2 which are curved outwardly, as at 16, to space, the same from the opposite faces of the bit9. It will be lseen that several sets of side bits 12 may be used in connection with the drill, the bits being curved outwardly to relatively different degrees', whereby openings of -any desired diameter may be formedin the wall of the mine,
liquely extending shoulders 17, which are. adapted`- to feed the slack or dirt cut bythe bits rearwardly of the head.
In the practicaluse jof my device, when' it is desiredto'connect the several bits to the` The outer fa'ce of the head 5` isformed with diametrica-lly opposite ob y head, the side bits 12.' are arranged in the opposite sides -of the socket-7, and the bit 9 .is disposed between the side bits, so` that the.
reduced. -extension 11 thereof' projecting y through the bore of the extension '6, and the beveled surfaces'l on the opposite facesof .the central bit engage the -beveledinner faces of the bits 12. nut 18fis threaded upon the projecting extremity of the extension 11,
' the nut being adapted to bear against the reduced extension 6 thereby serving to create .the requisite endwise. adjustment of the bit9 to lock the side bits in operative vposition Within the head. From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that should any of the bits become bro-ken or dull, -they may be readily removed by disengaging the nut 18 from the extension .l1 of the central bit, whereby new or sharpened bits may be readily secured in the head.
- Having thus fully described my invention what I' desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A drill comprising a head having a socket therein, the opposite kvvall's of such being provided with coacting means Whereby the same may be maintained in operative position relatively to the head.
'2. A device of the character described comprising a. hollow head having a tubular extension, a bit arranged centrally Within said y head and having a reduced extension projecting through said tubular extension, auxiliary bits arranged Within said head yupon opposite sides of the eentral'bit, the opposite faces of said central bit being beveled intermediate of itsends, the inner faces of said side bits bein beveled for engagement With the beveled aces of said central bit, means mounted upon the extremity of the reduced extension of said central bit to maintain said bits Within Said head, said central bit and the inner Walls or'l the head being provided with coacting means to hold said central bit against axial movement.
In' testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of tvvo Witnesses. h CHRISTOPHER LORRANCE ANTON. Witnesses:
