After the tooth 38 of the wheel 7 shall have passed over the tooth of the dog 6 and is in front thereof, the spring 13, cam 9 and dog 6 will assume the positions shown in Fig. 5, and the tooth 38 (Fig. 7) will assume the position there shown by the tooth following tooth 19 in Fig. 5.
' In the embodiment of the invention shown .in Figs. 9 to 16fincli1sive, the fixed dog is the rocker 21. The movable dog is provided with a finger 22 for engaging the teeth-of the escapement which engages with a guide-screw or pin 23.

The movable dog is also provided with a post 26 to which is secured a spring 27 the opposite end of said spring being secured to an extension 28 of an oscillatory curved cam member 29, said cam being provided with a trunnion pivoted to the rocker member. The curved surface of cam 29 bears against the curved surface 30 of the movable dog. In the position shown in Figs. 9,10and12 the carriage is in its normal position of rest,the tooth 31 of the escapement resting against the movable dog 22. In that position, the oscillatcam 29 serves as a stop for the movable dog, in" which position the coil spring 27 is ,under tension. A plate 32 is positioned upon the rocker 21, and this plate, in conjunction with the head ofscrew 33, holds the movable dog in position upon the rocker member, the dog being free to slide beneath said plate. When the rocker member is moved from the position shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 12 to that shown in Fig. 13, the es- 1 insane? capement tooth 31 will be released from the finger 22 of the movable dog and will rest upon the fixed dog 20. The movable dog, being released, will jump forward as shown in Figs. 13 and 14, being forced to such position by means of the oscillating cam, the curved surface of which rolls upon the curved surface 30 of the movable dog, such operation being effected by means of the coil spring 27 which drawsthe cam 29 to the position shown in Fig. 13. When the rocker member 21 is moved in the opposite direction, the next. escapement tooth engagesv with the finger 22 of the movable dog and moves that dog to the position shown in Fig. 9 against the resistance of the spring 27 and the curved cam 29, said ca m rolling against the surface 30 and brin 'n the movable dog and the escapement w cc to a noiseless stop. In order to back-space the escapement wheel 3 1, that wheel is pushed backwardly, by any suitable means, in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 15 from the position shown in until finger 22 of the movable dog passes over or esgapes in front of the tooth 41. It will, accordingly, be provided mechanism well-adapted to attain, among others, all the ends and objects above being in the position seen that I have v enumerated in an exceedingly simple, yet
efiicient manner.
It will be observed that the entire opera- I tion of feeding the part to be spaced, which in the present instance is an escapement wheel, takes place without impact or concussion,,'-and therefore noiselessly, and yet the partsvare accurately and positively arrested in the positions to which they are adapted to be moved While the proportions of the co-acting cam members may be varied to any different requirements, it is desirable in the embodiments of the invent-ion'herein described that one, should be substantially twice the diameteriof the other. This insures a pure rolling contact between the cam surface and insures against friction which might result if'the surface were allowed to slip or slide one upon the other.
