MAGDOUGALD DEXTER AND JAMES LAFAYETTE DUKE, 0F COLUMBUS, GEORGIA.
ADJUSTABLE OVEN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MACDOUGALD DEX- Tina and JAMES L. DUKE, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Muscogee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Ovens; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable ovens and the object in View is to produce a simple and efficient apparatus of this nature so arranged that the size of the oven may be increased or diminished for the purpose of confining the heat to a more or less limited space.
The invention comprises various other details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional View through our improved oven, and Fig. 2 is a. sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, J designates the inner casing or oven chamber having oppositely disposed openings T therein, each of which is normally closed by means of the pivotal dampers W, each having two wings W and W each damper being provided for one of said openings and held by gravity in a closed relation. Surrounding the easing J is a double wall J with a space intervening between the inner of the double walls and the casing J affording a flue I. A suitable burner J is mounted underneath the casing and the products of combustion may pass up through said flue and through the openings when the dampers are opened. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings that the wings of said dampers are parallel to each other and are of different widths, the upper wing W being Specification of Letters Patent.

shorter than the wing W and, by reason of the lower wings being heavier, serve to normally hold the dampers in closed relation when not in use for supporting the plate which will be presently described.
lVhen it is desired to adapt the oven for different capacities, a plate Q is placed within the casing and supported upon the wings W of oppositely disposed dampers, the weight of the plate serving to hold the outer wing of each damper lV transversely across the flue, thereby directing the heat through the openings T into the space heneath the plate Q. In order to support racks upon the inner casing, lugs Q are spaced opposite each other upon which the racks are adapted to rest. The plate Q is provided with suitable openings to allow the products of combustion to circulate through into the space above and out of the usual flue opening at the top and back of oven. It will be noted with reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, that, when the side winged dampers are in vertical position, they do not entirely close the openings in the inner walls of the casings, thus allowing the products of combustion to pass through into the space below the plate Q, although the openings are somewhat restricted by being partially closed by the lower wings of the dampers.
What we claim to be new is 1. An adjustable oven, comprising an inner and an outer casing, spaced apart forming flue, each side wall of the inner casing being apertured, winged dampers pivotally mounted in each of said apertures, a plate adapted to be supported upon the upper wings of two oppositely disposed dampers whereby the outer ends of the dampers may be held transversely across the fines to form partitions therein to direct heat through the apertures in the space beneath the plate, as set forth.
2. An adjustable oven, comprising an inner and an outer casing, spaced apart forming a flue, each side wall of the inner casing being apertured, oppositely disposed dampers, each having two wings which are of different widths in planes parallel to each other, each damper pivotally mounted in an aperture in the wall of the inner casing and normally closing the aperture by gravity, a plate adapted to be supported upon the upper Wings of said oppositely disposed damour signatures in the presence of two witpers to hold the other Wing of each damper nesses.

In testimony whereof We hereunto afiix O. M. YOUNG.
